Join Commissioner Jack Porter for an overview of last night's meeting and what's coming up at the City!

Photos from Jack Porter's post 12/10/2023

This is what YOUR city leadership thinks of the public they are entrusted to serve.

Our taxpayer dollars are going to pay the exorbitant salaries of top executives to mock members of the public.

The city staff's texts mocked the way a resident pronounced the word "distilleries."

A text from Christian Doolin, an Assistant City Manager, included a meme from "The Simpsons" TV show of the character Ralph Wiggum with the caption, "Me fail English? That's unpossible."

Every single staff member involved is in an executive leadership position and makes over $200k.

City manager Reese Goad offered no comment on the text messages, and neither did anyone else.

What is going on at City Hall? This is appalling.

If you work in leadership at the City, you're held to a higher standard. If you don't like it, don't work for the public.

06/10/2023

This is honestly so crazy! lol

The establishment hates to see a young woman like me, and everyday people like us challenge their inside power.

But we know that when we organize and when we lead with love, we win.

Special interests and self-serving politicians know they can’t win on the merits of the issues. All that’s left are their desperate attempts to manipulate the public.

Pay-to-play coverage that favors advertisers and powerful special interests should have no place in our democracy.

We're going to need your help fighting back.

If you’re with me, I hope you’ll chip in what you can at jackfortallahassee.com today to support our campaign. 😊

But try as they might: they can’t buy Tallahassee. It belongs to all of us!

With your help, we will win:

The governor’s habitual overreach into local governments’ affairs has become autocratic — and it plainly does not serve the needs of the public.

It’s troubling to see the pattern that has occurred in Hillsborough and now Orange County prosecutors’ offices, with an overzealous executive pursuing the removal of key elected leaders based on political differences.

With the recent failure of a radical State overreach in Jefferson County, we in Leon hope cooler heads will prevail for the benefit of our students and educators.

Local democracy, Home Rule authority and separation of powers are values Floridians hold deeply. All of us who swear an oath to serve the public must heed our duty to protect and defend it.

Loving having my mom in town ❤️ She spent the day with me in City Hall for yesterday's meetings.

20/04/2023

Especially after property taxes just went up in 2020 — I oppose the City Manager’s recommended tax increase.

20/04/2023

Florida's legislature is pushing a raft of bills that abuse preemption to hamper local democracy, harm BIPOC communities & prioritize corporations over people.

Read my op-ed here: http://bit.ly/3UvFcBn

The price of paradise: The legislature’s attempts to erode local control 20/04/2023

"One glaring example of state politicians ending local freedom is a proposal to take the reins of municipally owned utilities away from the local communities. In this case, Gainesville Regional Utilities is threatened and was coincidentally a recent object of desire of Florida Power & Light.

SB 170, which has already passed the Senate. This bill would open local governments to lawsuits for any local ordinances deemed “arbitrary or unreasonable” and require business impact statements for any ordinances. The litigation process would repeatedly interrupt enforcement while the ordinance is reviewed.

This is a dangerous disruption in local governance and potentially financially crippling to communities. The impacts of this bill are far-reaching and hard to overstate.

If this legislation is passed into law, not only would it have a chilling effect on local governments’ ability to enact laws to protect their local environment, but it would also freeze the enforcement of crucially important ordinances."

Having fun chatting with the Dolphin Democrats who came all the way from Broward to petition their government.

As the capital, we aren’t just a city for Tallahassee residents, we get to be a city for all of Florida!

What happened tonight raises serious questions about the judgment of this City administration.

Free speech and the right to peaceably assemble are fundamental American freedoms.

I can’t speak for the conscience of this Commission majority, but I certainly do not support arresting protesters for exercising their constitutional rights in opposing extreme anti-choice legislation.

*DEADLINE TONIGHT!*

Taking some time today to call folks to ask for their support for our 2024 campaign for city commission!

Tonight is our first fundraising deadline. Can you chip in today to send a message to the good ole boys that you’ve got our back? ❤️

Late post:

It was an absolute delight meeting with folks from the Lighthouse of The Big Bend this weekend. ❤️

Y'all have no idea how much it meant to me to spend time getting to know each of you.

LBB provides services to individuals with vision loss in the area in orientation and mobility, vocation rehabilitation, assistive
technology, services for children and teens, iPhone training, and support groups.

Some of you may already know that my maternal grandfather was born blind, and that despite this, and as an Italian immigrant in the 1930’s, he went on to graduate from the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard Law School and serve as a judge in Yonkers, NY. He spent his entire career working to expand services for others with limited or no vision.

I know he’d be so impressed with the folks I met, just like I was. 😊

**HELP US REACH OUR MARCH FUNDRAISING GOAL**

Since we announced our re-election campaign, we have received a lot of support! I’m so grateful that we are all still in this fight because we understand we do have unfinished business in City Hall.

But… ⏳We do have a goal for March to ensure our team starts off strong! We are inching toward our goal and we have just over a week to reach our goal!!

🤜🤛 Can you pitch in today to send a loud and clear message to our community?

Friends, we have only begun to take the first steps in the past few years toward electing City Commissioners that will work toward accountability and transparency. Let’s come together to continue to advance the public interest in our local government!

“There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about.” -Margaret J. Wheatley 👊

06/03/2023

We’ve got unfinished business, y’all! I’m officially running for re-election!

Together, we’ve made amazing progress towards reforming what’s broken in our local government:

✅Working for the public interest and everyday people
✅Standing against dysfunction in City Hall and business as usual
✅ Fighting to keep families safe and in their homes
✅ Challenging the infamous pay-for-play culture in Tallahassee
✅ Opposing the shameful $27 million Blueprint stadium giveaway

There’s little doubt that certain entrenched interests connected to the failed status quo will cynically field an establishment-funded challenger. But we also know that when we organize, we win.

That’s why I’m asking for your help.

Our grassroots campaign for victory in 2024 will be funded by everyday working people and families all across Tallahassee standing together — not big campaign bundlers and City vendors whose interests don’t reflect our greatest needs.

Can you chip in $5, $27, or $100 dollars today to start off our campaign strong at jackfortallahassee.com?

Yours,
Jack ❤️
