Rudeus is back! 🔥 (via Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2)
So I see they're going to invest in Rudy's adventuring time.
Took a trip to Anime Central today. Met the talented Aleks Le, the voice behind Kazuya from Rent-a-Girlfriend. "Post Nut Clarity"
This is me putting in my own 2 cents into the whole “quality of season 2 Mushoku”. This post will contain slight spoilers, so proceed at your own discretion.
I keep seeing comments about the depreciating quality from Mushoku S1 into Mushoku S2 based off of the most recent trailer. I will straight up admit that something about the lack of shadows around Rudeus’s face makes me a little uncomfortable. I am also not going to pretend to understand how budgeting works when it comes to animating certain episodes/anime.
First off, I want to lay it out there that the 2 ?trailers? that have come out for Mushoku S2 are heavily implying that the story will pick up during his adventuring days with Stepped Leader and Counter Arrow. The manga specifically, barely covers any of this. Everyone seems to have their own opinions on how important these moments were. MY OPINION is that the manga handled these moments well, essentially giving the reader a gist of what happened during this time while allowing the story to move forward at a decent pace. Are these moments important? I would say yes, since we find out why Rudeus heads to Sharia, why people call him Quagmire, and why he has an elf hanging off his shoulder. The moments adventuring are not necessarily important, since those events don’t necessarily sway Rudeus later on in the story, except for the 2 random instances that he runs into Suzanne and the other with Sara. If you removed both of these encounters from the story, I honestly believe the main plot would be fine. Did I like these 2 little encounters? Yes, they were fine and simple. I wouldn’t mind if those events get adapted, but I would also understand if they don’t. Why spend money on the events that don’t impact the story?
Going back to the events with Counter Arrow and Stepped Leader, the animators/people behind the scenes felt that these events are important enough to justify being adapted. I am definitely not opposed to that either, since we will really see Rudy grow as an adventurer and how he actually makes a name for himself without the use of Eris and Ruijerd. The events that come to mind that HAVE to be adapted in order to justify covering these moments are when he saves Counter Arrow from the grizzlies, when they run into Stepped Leader while trying to gather snow drake scales, saving Sara and what “happens” after, and fighting the red wyrm. From what I see in the trailers, they better be covering the grizzlies, snow drakes and Sara. If they are decidedly going down this path, they better cover these events. The red wyrm is a bit of a wishful bonus, which can eventually lead as a transition into moving to Sharia. The main concern I have is that these episodes will take up more of the season than I would like it to. If they manage to find a way to fit all of these events into the first 2 to 3 episodes, preferably the former, I think they have the potential to get to the marriage by the end of the first part of season 2. They still have a lot of events to cover during the school arc, but the only major animation events that would be happening are the fight with Badi and the fight with Fitz. In perspective, that’s a lot to cover and animate in one part, which makes it understandable if they forget 1 or 2 shadows an episode. Most of the “important content” also happens to be the slice of life-style school arc. If they are inadvertently overlooking the quality of the adventurer arc in order to focus on other events, that’s acceptable.
Secondly, it should be a given to expect a second part to season 2. The trailer also teases some “major” events to happen during the Begaritt Continent/Teleportation Labyrinth arc. This is where I figure most of the budget is going to be focused if money really is the issue. If you know what to expect during this arc, I feel like you could agree that the whole journey through the desert and the labyrinth should not be cut short. A LOT of stuff happens, a lot of information comes from this arc, and it will require time and animation to fully convey what happens. Given how much more important this arc is compared to the adventurer arc, I do not see a problem with the Labyrinth arc being better produced than the adventurer arc. The whole show does not have to be consistently high octane quality, since the beauty of the show is its ability to convey the story in an attractive format. So while people are writing off the whole second season due to the few odd looking frames in the trailer, I say, those aren’t even crucial parts. Those frames still look substantially better than most anime series currently out, so what are you really complaining about? It’s like getting worked up over a filler episode of Boruto, considering it isn’t that important.
Since the first season was able to cover 6 volumes, I also feel like it’s reasonable to expect the Labyrinth arc to be concluded by the end of part 2, if not also introducing the new “family member” to the Greyrat family. This leads me to indulge in the rumors of there being a 3rd part to season 2. If there IS a third part, I don’t feel like it’s too much to expect the anime to get to the part where a major fight happens with a certain someone, an alliance is made with this same someone, and a certain redhead is reintroduced. Most of volume 13 can be covered in 1, maybe 2, episodes. Early volume 14 is about the same, except there is the very obvious (4) that must be covered.
Side note: A whole episode to break down everything that happens during the reading of the diary would send Mushoku into a whole tier of its own.
After the major event from volume 14, we have the happy fun times of the first half of volume 15. As odd as it is, I believe that the first half of volume 15 could end the third part and season 2. After the BIG fight that happens (good luck animating all that Bind), with Rudeus bowing his head would end the season beautifully. Of course, there is a whole second half to the light novel that has to eventually get adapted. Now I am just talking out my ass with all my wishful thinking, but I am hoping this reintroduction of the redhead is done via OVA, much like the Goblin Slayer episode was done, while having the episode end with her asking, “You’re still Rudeus, right?”. This way the 3 supporting mates are brought in during 1 season.
This post started with me rationalizing the animation in the trailers, but it just ended up being a detailed wish list. IN CONCLUSION, I feel like we shouldn’t be judging all of season 2 based off of the most recent trailer, since the events being judged aren’t necessarily crucial to begin with for the story. Regardless, the animation is still upper echelon for that being the case.

In the Land of Leadale - Episodes 1-12
Once again, I sifted through the sub 7 rating anime on MAL to find something that does not deserve it’s rating. Out of quite a lot of meh anime, In the Land of Leadale, stood out as OKAY. Yes, it’s another isekai, but let's be honest what isn’t an isekai now. A truck is currently on its way to my house right now as I write and I will be in an isekai. I am going to start rating the “transportation” method in the isekai I watch based on how serious it is, to how funny or to how boring. Transportation as how the person gets sent to their new world. In this show, our protagonist lived a pretty sad life before she died and came to this new world, essentially being injured so badly in an accident that she had to be hooked up to life-support systems. When those machines stopped working one day, she died, and woke up in Leadale. Leadale being a game she played while alive, has essentially become her new reality. This delivery is very similar to Overlord’s delivery, except I don’t think in Overlord they confirmed what happened to his body. So other than being a pretty basic and unoriginal delivery, I will give it some props for specifying she died, so let's give this rating a solid 5 out of 10.
So this high elf, named Cayna, arrives and starts being OP, as one does. I guess it’s because I just finished watching the fourth season of DanMachi, that for some reason I expected more high flying action from Cayna since that’s what I came to expect from Ryuu. I will admit that I was a little disappointed that “more” wasn’t done in terms of action, but I have to accept that not every show needs action. So if this show didn’t have much action, was it funny? Yes and no. It was not Konosuba, but it pulled a giggle out of me at LEAST once an episode. The characters were energetic and lovable, which is essentially this show’s strong point. The whole family interaction is entertaining, since it’s weird but different from other shows. I also love the lack of purpose that the characters seem to have. Cayna just wants to eat, drink, and sleep. She knows she’s OP, but just decides to be a mom and grandmother while living the simple life of an adventurer. I feel like this first season is the start to a plethora of wild shenanigans she could get herself into. We got a small PG taste of it but it can go farther. I want her to throw ragers and stuff.
The only other thing I have to note was that this show also has a lot of potential to be darker and grittier than it seems. I don’t know why the writers or studio want this show to come off soft, but there are some instances where the problems bring up more serious problems that shouldn't always have happy endings. After watching Tsukimichi, the happiest of anime can still deliver the harshest of scenes and this show built the foundation of having some impactful storytelling. I don’t even know if there will be a second season, but I pray to god one of the people developing the second season sees my post. I don’t want to specify what scenes could have delivered more, but there was one regarding a kid that could have been handled differently.

Overlord - First Trip to Erantel and Momon - Episode 5-9
Ainz decides to take a trip to Erantel, the closest city to the tomb of Nazarick and the city mentioned by the village chief from Carne Village. Erantel and the tomb are located within the Re-Estize kingdom. A lot of little minor events take place from the second they arrive which won’t be discussed again until much, much later. The whole, Ainz is a secret genius, begins now technically. He arrives in full armor and the name of Momon, in order to build a separate persona from Ainz. He is accompanied by Narberal Gamma, one of the battle maids. We are introduced to the red potion, Nfirea Bareare, and Ninya. Ninya, being a girl disguised as a boy, is the spellcaster to the group that Ainz decides to join. During an es**rt mission to take Nfirea to Carne Village to gather some herbs, Momon essentially dominates a gerbil. This hamster/gerbil is now my new favorite character. Afterwards, the party they were accompanying gets jumped by a woman with strength that could rival Gazef. Momon acknowledges that the woman had her own goals and the party was just in the way. So her actions were justified, but Momon began his attack on her with the idea that his revenge was not revenge, but it was because this woman was now in HIS way. Towards the end of the fight when she is about to die, he lets it be known to her that he is giving her a portion of the torture she gave to Ninya. He shows that he indeed had a soft spot for Ninya, since all Ninya did was try to help him and was overcoming her own hurdles of being a girl while trying to make it as an adventurer. Before Ninya died, she mentioned that she had an older sister.
I also love that we are reunited with Enri a little bit more. I don’t know why, but I find her hilarious because she’s essentially Ainz. Nfirea also has a crush on Enri, to which I think they get married later on in the show? I don’t exactly know that. I remember Cocytus mentioning that Ainz having children might be fun. There are a few couples coming up in the show, and later on we realize Ainz actually has a soft spot for children. So, I hope the show goes over this in a later season. It would also be entertaining to see uncle Cocytus trying to play with children.
We also see Ainz act like someone who’s not Ainz for a small bit during his battle with Clementine, calling her a bitch and handling the cruelty himself. Ainz does kill a lot in the show, but he is never really cruel about it and tends to delegate that to the floor guardians, so this small moment seems really out of place. Is it bad? No, it’s a little edgy so it gets a pass. A few key lore notes I have is that Clementine is a defected member of the Black Scripture from the Slane Theocracy, but one of the weakest. I don’t know of any of the other members in the Black Scripture, but I am assuming there is going to be one or two that can actually fight back against Nazarick.

Grimgar, Ashes and Illusions - Episodes 1-12
It’s been a while since I watched this show and I honestly forget how I even heard of it. It is never on any top anime list. It is not recommended on Crunchyroll no matter how much isekai you watch. It is not spoken about when people discuss isekai. So this is one of the very few shows that I saw and thought, no one else is talking about this so let me just see why. When I searched up what kind of genre it was, it said isekai. I imagined it would be slightly action packed and such, much like all the other thousands of shows out there. When I started watching this show, I was rather… confused. The story did not start out like all other shows. In fact, it feels like the story moves extremely slowly, except it doesn’t. It also feels like very little is happening.
We do not have an overpowered protagonist, so it feels weird to watch a real, from nothing to something story. I know the idea isn’t foreign, but shows like Naruto and other shonen shows come-up stories with an already strong main character. This show isn’t a shonen and the main character is weak. When I say it feels strange, I mean that it’s REALLY fu***ng weird to see it actually done. In fact, I would like it if someone actually told me of any other shows where the main character was not strong. After getting transported to this new world, all of these people seem to have also forgotten about the world they originally came from. They were also expected in this new world, which makes it obvious that this event was carefully orchestrated and for some greater purpose. They are then given a crash course in whichever guild/class they choose. They then partner up and try to survive in this new world. Haruhiro, the main character, does not have any great power and neither does any of his party. If you can imagine a real “start from the bottom” fantasy story, this is it. Everything from the monsters, the money, the food, the gear, the drama, the stress, everything is real to them. One thing this show did great was animate facial expressions, which in a heavy show like this is extremely important.
After they start getting into a comfortable rhythm, they encounter a problem that leads to their leader being killed. This will not be forgotten any time soon. This will probably go down as one of the more depressing and stressful isekai I have watched. After the loss of their leader, our main character tries to fill in the gap for the group. While the new responsibilities aren’t that vast for him, it’s obvious the leader had characteristics about him that Haruhiro does not and probably will never have. The whole group can’t seem to come out of this pit they are in and move forward. Eventually, they had to replace their leader's position with someone else if they were to try to keep making it as a group. The new member they got to join them, is very alienated from the moment she arrives which further damages the camaraderie of the group. The whole show then moves forward with the struggles of building a relationship with this new girl, filling the hole left behind by their old leader, getting stronger and just surviving. All of this, on top of trying to keep the group unified. These were very “down to earth” struggles for our characters and it honestly shocked me that someone would try to write something like this.
I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but for some reason I did not want to like this show. It was too real and too serious for a fantasy. It was too slow in action for isekai and it didn’t even really feel like an isekai after a while because the core concept of them being from another world is quickly forgotten. Even though I didn’t want to like it, I have to admit that this wasn’t bad. It was good. It was really good. A lot better than what my brain wants to accept. The last major fight that Haruhiro was in, had a lot of the similarities to the fight that Bell Cranel from Danmachi had at the end of season 1. I couldn’t help but notice that I have seen this scene before. One of the things that I appreciated more the second time around was the animation being so beautiful with its water color theme. The voice acting was very well delivered, but the sound overall could have done more to emphasize the drama happening. Some of the characters were annoying, but when that was the goal, then I can say they were all very well written. I know this show came out a while ago, but I can’t help but wish this show got a second season. It’s too unique in the isekai genre to be forgotten and hopefully this post is a beacon to everyone that there is a gem buried here. In the giant ass list of isekai I have watched, this is a top 5 show.

Ranking of Kings - Episode 13-23
Is it weird that I looked forward more to writing the second half of this show than the first half? Maybe it’s because I have a lot of opinions on the show overall that I wanted to cover. Stories start unveiling and secrets become exposed. For the most part, it’s a great story. The bad guys are also the good guys. The good guys are maybe the bad guys. The trouble is fully here. Also, I feel like I can notice Ainz’s voice everywhere now after rewatching Overlord dozens of times.
The first thing I want to discuss is if Queen Hilling is related in any way to Desha and Despa? My little brain understands that the trip Bojji went on was orchestrated by her and she intended for Bojji to see her original home, and she also had some sort of connection to the royalty there. I can’t find any definitive information as to what her actual connection to Desha’s kingdom is, but it could have tied up some loose ends, like mentioning that this nation was a sister nation and that’s why Desha took a personal interest in protecting a completely different nation. Like, I know Desha is shown to have some sort of distaste for Bosse’s kingdom, but we all know Desha isn’t really a bad guy.
The relationship between King Bosse and Miranjo is also a very *creepy* one. I can see that maybe my perception of their actual relationship may have been a bit skewed, since there is so much betrayal happening. Her actions to try to bring Bosse into power originally and again after removing Daida make it seem more like a lover trying to be with her man. From what I see, people are saying that they had more of a father/daughter relationship. If it is a father/daughter relationship, THEN THIS IS THE MOST UNSETTLING WAY TO PORTRAY THAT RELATIONSHIP.
Also, this pair is the reason people die in this show. This show definitely tries to bring on the grim and grittiness. But even with all the bloodshed, if people are not in a flashback, then they are not dying, no matter what happens to them, which is another unsettling thing now that I have rewatched this show. It doesn’t make the show “bad”, but it doesn’t provide a real sense of danger. Like, I get that Bosse went through some stuff and Miranjo lost her face and hands and mom and Bosse and dignity, as well as the brutal way that Bojji’s mom died, but nothing else necessarily feels like a threat now. The characters do seem imposing, and Ouken specifically, is frightening. But Hilling can heal, so who’s going to die? Even the monsters who apply grievous wounds don’t leave lasting damage thanks to Hilling. Is it bad? Well… no, as long as these same characters have some sort of appearance later on. Will they, though? I am not too confident about that, since it’s from my understanding that there’s not a lot of source content left to make into anime. So it will sadly be a net negative. Like, Dorshe should be fu***ng dead man. This man is missing limbs, eyes, and has been used as a chew toy countless times. Like, Hilling honey, at least let this man die, what are you doing to my man.
While the story and lore for this show can probably be expanded upon a lot more, it’s extremely depressing to know most of the manga has already been adapted. But even with that, there are so many things in this world that can come. I do hope they build on the groundwork they have laid out. There are many more kings to contest, at least 90 more. There are lost kings, like the one Bojji was dancing with. The underworld was barely covered in this first season as well. The amount of potential left by this first season is incredible with a little imagination. I hope they don’t call it after this second season, as it would be a great injustice to such world building. I am mainly praising this show this much because I just so happened to rewatch this show for this post. If I were to write these posts based on memory, it would not look good for Ranking of Kings, and most people would agree that the ending turned a lot of people away, because we didn’t agree with it. To say the resolution everyone came to at the end with Miranjo, Bojji, Bosse, Daida, Domas, Apeas, and Hilling does not satisfy. In fact, it fu***ng pi**ed me off. Everyone on the king's staff and Daida FORGAVE Miranjo with a little sway by Daida. The only person out of anyone at the end who had the right to bestow forgiveness onto Miranjo was Bojji. He was the one that was wronged, everyone else wronged him to appease her. Daida screwed his brother over consistently to appease her. Most of the king’s staff undermined him to cater to her. So why is it so important that they accept her if all she did was ruin them by cursing Bojji? She killed his mother and led Bosse to the strength that weakened him. Bojji can forgive her, but no one else should. Then everyone tries to make it up to Bojji by crowning him king instead of Daida, because he is now strong. There are so many two faced and scummy people in this nation, built on the pain and suffering of Bojji, I’m honestly not surprised Bojji left. Hell, I would want to leave too. Why would any self respecting king accept praise after disrespect? It would be the same as how we all make fun of Naruto for accepting the praise he got after beating Pain by the same people that ridiculed him while being an orphan. Forgiveness doesn’t require you to move forward with those people, and while it may have worked for Naruto, it’s not respectful for most people to do the same. So after rewatching this show a second time, I’m glad Bojji left. The staff is filled with people who conspired against you. Your own brother disrespected you and didn’t honor your right to the crown. Hilling did not contribute to building Bojji into a king, all she did was mother him because she didn’t believe in him. The nation itself is built on the death of his mother and a power tripping father who used you as a means to ascend. The people in the nation ridiculed Bojji to the ground and never respected his position as Prince, even though Bojji never wronged any of them. Bojji staying to rule as king was never going to be okay. The current queen is not his real mother, Daida has already been selected by the staff, and his own brother ordered his assassination. Bojji leaving and building his own country made of people who respect him is what’s best, and leaving the kingdom of Bosse with its bitch asses is the right decision.
When I reason the ending of the show like that, all of a sudden I don’t hate it as much. Because Bojji will become great and he is essentially leaving his toxicity behind. All of a sudden, I find this show beautiful and amazing again. Like I mentioned, I really do hope they make more than what’s available. It really will be a shame to lose the wonder set by this first season. All the memes of believing in Bojji supremacy might seem funny, but why not him? Why can’t there be Bojji supremacy??

Overlord - Carne Village - Episode 3-4
A lot happens in these next few episodes that dumb me when I first started watching this show, came off as needless banter by the character. Terms like Baharuth, Re-Estize, and Gazef Stronoff’s soldier mentioning that disloyal nobles were conspiring against the king. All of this just seemed like empty words to build the tension of the episode, but it’s not until much later that we realize Re-Estize was falling apart long before Nazarick appeared. Nazarick just happened to be a perfect entity to blame. The intro music initially came off as “edgy” since the show is going for more of a grim feel. But these songs are actually pretty dope.
Since coming to this new world, Momonga has been trying to grasp using his abilities or interacting with things, since everything is now real and not virtual. In this set of episodes, we are introduced to one of my favorite characters, Enri. Similar to characters like Bon Clay from One Piece, I didn’t know I would like her when first introduced. I guess I like my preconceptions proven wrong. Momonga arrives and quickly one-shots a few knights who were hunting Enri and her sister. Momonga, hesitant about his abilities and power in this new world, tries to scale upwards and use what is considered a weak “5th tier” spell on the knights and a single death knight. He doesn’t see that a 5th tier spell to regular people is stuff of legends to them. It is essentially just overkill. The death knight has a fun time slapping around the knights. Again, the show goes into some incredibly fine detail about issues that won’t become significant until much later. It is mentioned that there is an ongoing feud between Re-Estize and the Baharuth Empire and that the attack that Momonga was warding off was supposedly done by Baharuth. Later they explained how there is a small conspiracy that a third nation, the Slane Theocracy, is instigating this hostility between both of the nations by staging these attacks on the small villages in Re-Estize. When speaking to the village chief, he decided to be addressed as Ainz Ooal Gown instead of Momonga. This is due to him wanting to get the name of the guild out into the world, in order to see if any other guildmates will respond to it. It’s weird, but the voice actors for Momonga do an oddly good job at making it apparent that Momonga is scared and paranoid. Which is understandable, given how little information is available.
We are shown that the conspiracy was true, the Slane Theocracy used these attacks on the villages to draw out and single out Gazef Stronoff. Gazef, being the chief warrior for Re-Estize, would cripple the country if he were to die. The Slane Theocracy sends another attack to Carne Village, now targeting Gazef. Gazef and Momonga get along and Momonga agrees to protect the village while Gazef wards off the attackers. After Gazef gets pushed to his limit, Momonga pulls a switcheroo and confronts the attackers himself while saving Gazef. While confronting the attackers, Momonga learns that the magic being used are spells that were also used in Yggdrasil the game. He also scales how dangerous the enemy is and can be during this fight. The attackers are forced to use their trump card, which is a very ugly looking angel. The attackers believed they had won, but Momonga starts realizing that if this is their most powerful attack, then he must be unbelievably strong in this world.
After they took care of business, they went back to the tomb. Momonga then decided to change his name from Momonga to Ainz Ooal Gown, thinking that the name Ainz will garner more attention from people who might know him. I appreciate now that they do stuff a lot of information into very few episodes. I don’t think I appreciated this the first few times watching it, since I tend to get overwhelmed with the information. I actually wish they would have kept this pace throughout the rest of season 1 and 2.
