“It’ll help bring more vehicles, crews and dismounts home alive."
Mounted armored vehicles, such as the Bradley, have long been used to hunt targets and provide armored transport to dismounted Soldiers.
However, once onboard, Soldiers lose visibility of what's happening around them on the changing battlefield, leaving them less prepared at dismount.
In an effort to provide more situational awareness in transport, a cross-enterprise Army team is working to incorporate the Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) technology and sensors for optimal battlefield visibility at every stage of the mission. ➡️ https://go.usa.gov/xtT3v
Have you wondered why our helicopters in Alaska have skis mounted to the landing gear? The answer may surprise you!
The extra surface area the ski provides each wheel help to distribute the weight across all ground conditions -- not just snow; Alaska has an abundance of a terrain called "muskeg."
Muskeg is a marsh-like terrain feature where water and partly dead vegetation are covered by a layer of moss, which conceals the condition of the ground from above. Landing on the muskeg with just wheels can cause the aircraft to become unstable. With the weight distribution offered by the skis, the risk to the aircraft is significantly reduced.
