Art of Florian Jacot
Figure painting demonstration for one of my painting classes at Toronto School of Art.
Monochrome painting
More refined facial features...
Still want to keep the sculpture loose.
Blocking in the Facial features...
Thought seeing elements of the sculpture studio in the background would be a distraction, but I actually like it. It creates an environments in which the sculptures seems to be comfortable in. The studio light contracting with the outdoor window light gives the scene an nice mood.
Getting more into blocking in the head...
Taking it a little further.
I kind of like the coil effect. Reminds me of driftwood sculptures. :)
I think I am going to keep that coil/driftwood feel.
Here is the beginning of a sculpture demo, applying loose coils of clay over a wire armature. Winter Term 2022, Figure Sculpture class at TSA (Toronto School of Art)
Here is how far I took last year's demonstration for the Male figure study during the Summer 2021
Here is a back view of a female sculpture I had started last year as a demonstration for an online class.
Back View.
Starting with the muscle groups of the leg.
Back muscles

Will be posting soon links to upcoming classes.
The Serratus Anterior is an interesting muscle going from the shoulder blade to the side of the ribcage.

Finally an update on the Anatomy study.
Core muscle groups added to the skeleton

Next we will start to add muscles, group by group.

Front torso built on both sides.
Back built up all around.
Skeleton Block-in start
Here is the beginning of an Anatomy study of a male figure in a basic standing pose using a third approach to Figure Sculpting. In this workflow we will sculpt a simplified skeleton first and then add the muscles group by group.

Almost done establishing the anatomy and form of the torso and legs.
Teaching the following online sculpture courses this Spring.
- Figure Sculpture
- Portrait Sculpture
- 3D Anatomy Sculpture
Blocked-in the head mass and mapped-in the back anatomical landmarks and silhouette.
Here is another back view. Didn't quite like the previous one.
Adjusted the proportions and better defined the anatomy structure and flow.
The anatomy of the back may seem quite complicated and overwhelming, however once you can visualize and indicate the landmarks of the pelvis, ribcage and shoulder blades, all the muscles fall into place. :)
You may not realize it but from the profile the sculpture looks quite thin, as we are focusing more on the silhouette and working in the "flat" at this point.
Will show a side view soon.

Building up the legs.
Defining the silhouette and mapping in the anatomical landmarks.
I find this new way of working much easier and more intuitive than the previous process used for the female figure!! Very exciting! 😄

Here is a back view of the female model sculpture demo from our last class. Planning to work more on it and finish her. Although it is also nice to see a sculpture at different stages of resolution. Shall I finish her or keep her partially planar/structural? What do you think?
Here is the beginning of a new class with a new demo, working on a male model.
This time we will follow an approach a bit different from the previous female model. We will be building the anatomy while focusing more on the silhouette.
Instead of establishing the basic form all around before defining the anatomy, we will be defining the anatomy right from the start, paying closer attention to the silhouette and working more in the "flat". Excited to see how things are going to come together! Stay tuned. :)

We're getting at the end of our first Figure Sculpture online class. Here is the full body planar structure demo, considering the main anatomy. It is a great process to be able simplify the complex human body into simpler geometric forms and smaller planes.
