CAMPAIGN PRESS RELEASE
October 26, 2022

Jamaal L. Jackson, candidate for Roanoke City Council acknowledges an error in campaign finance documents.

On October 25, 2022 at 5:19pm, Candidate Jackson received a phone call from Mr. Jeff Sturgeon, with the Roanoke Times, asking about there being fines coming to our campaign from the Roanoke City Registrar, Mr. Andrew Cochran, and the State Board of Elections. Candidate Jackson expressed to Mr. Sturgeon that he had not been made aware of any communication and that was his first time hearing of the issues. At 5:22pm, Candidate Jackson hung up with Mr. Sturgeon. Upon ending the call, Candidate Jackson noticed an electronic mail communication had been received from the City Registrar regarding the incident, time stamped at 5:11pm. Our campaign finance officer, Mrs. Peggy Read, was contacted at 5:24pm and immediately began looking into the matter and made plans to fully investigate the matter on the next business day.

Candidate Jackson has fully funded his campaign personally and has not solicited nor received any donations towards the campaign. All purchases, inclusive of road signs and campaign literature, have been made out of his personal funds. Such items have included the disclaimer “Authorized By The Candidate” vs “Paid for (or Authorized) by Jackson For Roanoke,” which the official name of the campaign account.

“I have personally invested my personal savings into this campaign,” Jackson said. “This was not an attempt to avoid transparency to citizens, this was an attempt at being financially integral by running a self-funded campaign.”

At this time, these issues are still being investigated with our finance team; however, Candidate Jackson has plans to rectify these issues expeditiously, while continuing his run for city council.

Question: What do you propose as a solution to the seemingly ongoing gun violence which plagues our city?

Answer: I believe that violence caused by guns can be avoided as we strengthen our police department with employee hiring and retention. Also, with strengthening our neighborhoods with the encouragement of neighborhood policing. The pride of homeowners and families goes a long way into the maintenance and upkeep of neighborhoods, preventing bad neighbors from moving in, and the upbringing of our youth. Crisis intervention is certainly helpful in neighborhoods that see a height in violence caused by guns. Lastly criminal punishment for those who are committing violence using a gun. We let too many people get off the hook instead of prosecuting them and bringing justice. This will send a clear message to those who feel like they can get away with it.

Below are some questions asked to Candidate Jackson. Check out his response to each question.

Question: The Roanoke City Council on June 21 endorsed a staff recommendation to spend $5 million more to address homelessness starting this fiscal year. The money will come from the city’s American Rescue Plan Act grant. What should be done with the money?

Answer: The money should be used to build more shelters and decent long term housing for the homeless. One way is by acquiring and renovating abandoned homes or buildings. The money could also be used to invest in job and life skills training. Money should be used to strengthen the agencies that are already in place, working to reduce homelessness and recidivism.

Question: The current strategy to end homelessness is to identify people without housing, offer them a wide menu of services to improve their wellness and opportunity, and pursue every means to place them in housing. It was developed and implemented by a broad coalition representing social services providers, faith-based groups, health care organizations, schools and area local govern how well this strategy is working and what, in your opinion, would improve it.

Answer: Wrap around services are essential to the betterment of our neighborhoods and communities at large; however, many of the services and programs aren’t known about, so they aren’t as effective as they could be. I would work to bring those services more into the communities and neighborhoods, where they are needed. That means taking services to the citizens, instead of waiting for citizens to come to the services they don’t know exist.

Question: Do you, a family member or a close friend have any experience with homelessness? What can you share about that and the impact on you?

Answer: Yes, as a pastor and community leader, I encounter people on a daily basis that are homeless and in need of assistance. We have had individuals camping out around our church campus. We respect them and do our best to assist them by offering to then the services currently provided by the city and private agencies to assist them in a pathway to a better life.

Now Patrick Henry High School is on lockdown… Join me in prayer for our city, our young people, our teachers (especially my wife, a teacher at PH), staff, and law enforcement. 🙏🏾

Our prayers, hearts, thoughts, and concerns are with the students, teachers, and faculty of WFHS as they were under lockdown due to a potential threat. 🙏🏾

I went to the school as a concerned parent/citizen to be there with fearful parents outside of the school not completely knowing what was going on with their kid(s). We must advocate for safer schools and daily security measures to keep our students and staff safe on a daily basis, not just football games.

Thank you to the Roanoke PD and Sheriff’s Offices for your quick response to this incident. We have much work to be done in the city.

Today is the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month!

Why does it span from September 15-October 15 rather than being a traditional calendar month? Those dates encompass the Independence Days of most Hispanic countries! Today, September 15, is the Independence Day of Costa Rica 🇨🇷, El Salvador 🇸🇻, Guatemala 🇬🇹, Honduras 🇭🇳, and Nicaragua 🇳🇮. We're so glad to have so many Roanokers with Hispanic Heritage, and are excited to celebrate their culture and contributions in the weeks to come!

Independence Day is celebrated in Mexico on September 16. It commemorates the "Grito de Dolores," when Catholic priest Manuel Hidalgo made the cry (or "grito") for independence from the town of Dolores, Mexico, in 1810. Eleven years of war followed before Mexico finally gained independence from Spain after 300 years of colonial rule. ¡Feliz Día de Independencia! ¡Viva México! 🇲🇽
