One of the most rewarding things I do as an ocularists is working with a bilateral prosthetic eye wearing patient. It’s extremely difficult as the eyes don’t have anything to focus on other than my voice and they often don’t move together perfectly. But coming up with the color that the patient wants and placing them for the first time is always a joy. Sure love serving our patients. They are amazing people.

Should patients wear eye protection after losing an eye? Yes, yes you should. We recommend something that has a polycarbonate lens. If you have a prescription then be sure to have that scrip on both lenses. It can sure change the way it looks if they are not the same. So get some glasses, cause you only have one eye now. Better protect it!

This kid is awesome! He came in the other day for buildup because he’s growing like a w**d. Oftentimes as a patient grows the eye might need an adjustment to fit properly. Two appointments, a few hours, and he’s heading back home to ride horses and go about his day. Glad we could get it back to looking and feeling good!

Another day at the office. We love helping all our patients get back to feeling whole again.

This patient requested several fixes to their eye that was made elsewhere. The pupil was an oblong shape instead of round, the color around the edge was slightly off, and the eye looked up and out toward their temple. We took a look and then added some plastic to get it to sit in the correct spot. Then we repainted the pupil and added in other details to make it look the way the patient wanted. They were thrilled with the end results.

Adjustments like these are only possible when the eye is relatively new (4 years or less) and was done with the correct materials.

Being satisfied with your prosthetic is import to us. Sometimes issues like these are easily correctable. If you are having any problems with your current prosthetic, reach out to us at any time. We want you to feel confident and comfortable!

How can a new eye help you?

A new patient came in requesting a replacement eye. The old prosthetic had an off-center pupil, lacked a realistic look, and needed a color correction in order to match the live eye. The fit also had several issues, particularly with the eye looking in toward their nose and the shape causing a bulge on their lower temporal corner.

All these issues were solved and the patient agrees that the new prosthetic looks and feels fantastic! We love making patients happy!

Layers and layers and layers, 100+. It always amazes me how different every eye is. The algorithm used for iris ID scanning targets about 240 unique features in an iris in order to determine identity. That's about 5 times as many as fingerprinting. Trying to replicate that is beyond difficult and while we can’t fool an iris scan we try to fool everyone that comes in contact with you. The challenge is always fun.

Terminator eye. Sometimes it’s fun to make something that really stands out. This was a super fun project that required some thinking out side the box to work. I think it really turned out amazing!

Custom made and fit conformers. Used for fitting a prosthetic, post surgery healing, and on rare occasions as a solution for a damaged eye as a cover for healing and protection. This one is very thin.

Installing system to remove chemicals in the lab and painting room. Drilling through 8 inches of concrete and steel. No nasty smells in this office. When I was growing up my grandmother had an allergic reaction to almost any perfumes, she said any strong smells (perfumes, chemicals) would instantly give her a migraine. We want all out guests to have the best possible experience when visiting and that means better air quality for all. 😁 This place is coming along!
