A Labor Saving Device. Using dynamite to blast holes to plant orange trees, Ivanhoe, California. Image taken July 1932. My grandfather told me that he used to buy dynamite at the local hardware store in Hanford and used it to dig holes and remove tree trunks. This photo shows the use of explosives in digging planting holes. I circled in red the person who must have lit the fuse and ran for cover.
The boards shall be beaten tomorrow. π

The New 40 Acres, November '31. Image taken by James Long of Ivanhoe, California. I was loaned a photo album that documented the development of virgin lands into an orange grove in 1931-1932. This was the first picture taken showing the lands as they appeared. The small mounds on the property were frost heaves *UPDATED* (there is much more to their formation than I first thought - Read through the comments), and much of the Central San Joaquin Valley appeared this way late in the year. These lands were never tilled until 1931.
Goodnight from a calm and beautiful Mineral King.
