The Art of Adam McQuaig
Painter, artist, bon vivant
Sketches from a few weeks back. ✏️
Just doing final touches on this commission I've been working on before it's varnished and goes to a new home. Dan the horse is one of the friendliest subjects I've ever painted. 🐴
Sold, sold, and sold! These three pieces have recently found themselves in private collections. Thank you and congrats to my collectors! Feel free to DM me and inquire about any pieces that you see posted on my feed. ✌️
A small lighting study I did yesterday evening. A bit of practice for a much larger piece that's planned out now.
Moving is taking a while so here's a collection of my recently finished paintings.
"Endless Fields, Endless Skies", oil on canvas, 24x30". I'm working on a new series of paintings that expresses the beauty, natural drama, and nostalgia of the place I live and grew up. This is one of the first paintings I've finished into that foray. More to come. ✌️
"Endless Fields, Endless Sky", oil on canvas 24x30". A good foray into a new body of work that I'm excited to share. I wanted to start capturing some of the beauty and dramatic nature of where I live with this series. More to come. ✌️
Painting in progress, studio space, me. Making the most of my little studio before a big transition into a new space at the start of next year. Got a lot of exciting things happening despite the lack of social media updates. Stay tuned. ✌️
Some shots. Work in progress. 🎨
A quick digital painting study. Had some crazy weeks, but getting back into the swing of things.
Happy Friday, all! Here's a piece that's either complete or at least right near the finish line. "The Calf", oil on wood board, 24x18". ✌️
A figure study done last week, just for something to upload. Trying to fit more of these into my schedule to continue to work on the basics while I do larger pieces. 👍
A totally not staged photo of me contemplating my current piece. Still working in a tiny studio. By next year I'm planning on having a much larger space to work. I'm currently only able to do one painting at a time, really, which is not condusive to the way I want to work. It's time to slowly make some changes. 😎
Still 🥶 here in the north east. Still being a hermit and painting the day away. The piece on the wall is undergoing a full dry sesh while I start underpainting a new one.
The tiny studio in action. It's not much, but I like making this space work for me. It's grown on me over the past year.
The current work in progress. Got a new phone and subsequently a better camera than the old one I had. Hopefully I'll feel less embarrassed by the photo quality from here on out. 🙃
The Way It Was (Is), 48x30", oil on canvas. One of my favorites from this series so far. Been dealing with some health related things for the first part of this year but we're getting back into the flow now. Excited to keep moving on this series. ✌
Sometimes I think I like the underpainting more than the final product. A rare early look at one of my pieces.
That's enough plein air, back to the main event. I'm dedicated to finishing this painting soon. Still a good deal to finalize on details, but it's coming along.
-DAY 03, EARTH- a foggy morning at the unused train tracks right next to my house.

Hey all, going to be attempting a digital plein air challenge for the month of April. Started with something a little local, my go to hiking spot at . Today's was just a quick speedpaint, but hopefully I can allocate more time each day for these!

48x30", oil on canvas. This piece is untitled for the time being, but it's finally finished. I learned a lot of new things working on this and I'm excited to continue this series alongside my other ones. Hope everyone is enjoying their week and staying healthy. ✌
"Golden", oil on canvas, 24x20". Part of a new series I'm going to be doing at the same time as my nostalgia pieces. I'll get a better image of this up later on, but this is officially finished. 🤙
The beginnings of something new. Approaching this piece in a slightly different way this time. Lots of prep and planning involved, so it's nice to actually get painting again.
Ink on ink on ink. One down, two to go. 🖋
A small, still untitled ink drawing I made last night. Started as an exploration but because something a bit more meaningful and deliberate as I worked. Enjoy.
The Temple of Hercules, Jordan. Plus a detail shot. I'm really enjoying my forays back into pen and ink drawings. It's something I used to do a lot of early in my art life. Old ruins are a really fun subject matter to explore as well. This one is framed and ready for sale. Possible prints coming later. DM with any questions. ✌
Today's digital painting study. Done haphazardly throughout the day. ✌
Art festival doodles during the quiet times. 🖋
Current underpainting in progress. That light bleed from the window is not part of the painting. 🙃
Happy Friday! I'm excited to announce that in two weeks on the weekend of the 21st I'll have a tent set up at the Mount Gretna Art Show in the emerging artists exhibit. Come out and enjoy the weather, scenery, food, and art (and dog) in beautiful Mt. Gretna! I'll have stickers, postcards, prints, and even some originals for sale. Looking forward to seeing you there! ✌
Some pieces are more of a struggle than others. Often for no particular reason at all. This one's been biting at me in a way I can't describe, but that doesn't mean you stop working and wait it out. Waiting for inspiration to strike is an old myth. Keep working and powering through. When in doubt just paint over large swaths you don't like and start over in spots. But never ever wait for that illusive inspiration, it only strikes while working; while your mind and body are moving.
Doesn't stop me from starting a new piece below, though...
Little excerpt of a new (little) painting. Not used to working this small but it's pretty fun to get into the details.
What a wonderful show by in such a beautiful space. So many great artists! I'm proud to be a part of it and humbled to be alongside these incredible pieces. ✌
"It Just Is", oil on canvas, 36x24". Happy Monday! Excited to have finished this over the weekend and ready for the next one. 🖌
