I am honoured to have been offered a chance to speak at this years BC Physiotherapy Conference. On April 30th, I will be giving a talk called, “Influencing Change: Advocacy and the Power of the Individual.”

This talk seeks to equip attendees with the tools to become advocates for themselves, their community, and the profession at large. All advocacy movements are made stronger by the collective actions of each individual moving piece.

I am humbled to be able to speak to the Physiotherapy Community and can not wait for this Conference!

Thanks to the Physiotherapy Association of British Columbia for giving me this amazing opportunity.

DONATIONS 30/09/2021

Today is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Today is Orange Shirt Day.

On this day, September 30, we remember and commemorate the indigenous people who were forced into residential schools. Today is a solemn day, and it is our duty as the descendants of settlers and beneficiaries of colonialism to educate ourselves on the horrors that our indigenous brothers and sisters endured in the residential school system. We also remember Phyllis Webstad, who had her favourite orange shirt taken away at a residential school.

Today is a day to reflect and remember. I highly encourage everyone who is benefiting from the STAT day today, to consider donating to one of the following organizations below.

With the election having come and gone with little difference to the structure of our government, I believe it is important to have a conversation that was started in 2019, but no doubt will become more prominent over the coming days.

It’s time for electoral reform. In 2015, Justin Trudeau promised electoral reform and reneged on his promise.

You can say what you will about his decision to break such an important promise, but it does not change the fact that proportional representation was attempted in BC and was rejected by the right-wing BC Liberals.

There must be a collaborative effort from people across the political spectrum in order for us to make such monumental changes to our democracy. Your party affiliation should not be what guides you in your viewpoint on Proportional Representation.

Those on the right in the Conservative Party and the Peoples Party, and those on the left in the NDP all probably have a sour taste left in their mouths after last night, and why wouldn’t you? First-past-the-post is an antiquated model and it must be changed. Can you imagine if we actually had proportional representation?

I would encourage you to write to your newly elected MPs and demand electoral reform. There needs to be pressure from all sides. The Liberals won’t do it until Canadians make it impossible for them to ignore it.

The time is now. We need electoral reform.

Restaurant workers blame low wage on pandemic labour shortage - NEWS 1130 26/08/2021

I think this is an important talking point. You’ll see many people claiming that the service industry workers would rather stay home and accept government cheques instead of go back to work.

As someone who was a server when wave one came down in March and has transitioned to a professional career in the past year and a half, this is just not true. Servers and bartenders were paid literally below minimum wage. Dishwashers get tips from the bars and servers as do cooks. Covid has decimated this revenue stream for workers. Slightly higher wages isn’t going to bring people back who have already found jobs.

I know for a fact that if I didn’t have my current job, and was offered a serving gig of say 15$ an hour instead of the serving wage, I would still refuse. Perhaps the reasons
people aren’t going back is:

1. They’ve already found other jobs
2. The cost of living has increased so much with Covid that there is zero way they could afford to live in places like Vancouver on a serving gig
3. Workplace standards are still so low that workers have no intention of returning to a place that doesn’t value them correctly as workers
4. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY: retail and service staff have been taking constant abuse from Anti-Maskers and Anti-Vaxxers that they refuse to be treated like that anymore. Every day I hear stories of abuse at the hands of these people because these workers are doing what they can to save their jobs and livelihoods. It isn’t the fault of the worker that COVID continues to run rampant in our communities. It isn’t the fault of the worker that there are still under vaccinated communities that have pockets of transmission. And it isn’t the fault of the worker that others do not understand how dangerous DELTA is. This is basically COVID20.

Don’t blame the workers for terrible working conditions.
Don’t blame the workers for changing careers.
Don’t blame the workers for not being willing to take constant abuse from ignorant/belligerent individuals in our communities.

We need to do better for our workers and think critically. All these quotes about lazy workers is only coming from the employers. Maybe, just maybe, we should be asking the worker?

Restaurant workers blame low wage on pandemic labour shortage - NEWS 1130 Restaurant workers say the job vacancies can be blamed on the industry's low wages, and federal benefits providing more income than the jobs themselves.

I am incredibly humbled to have been a part of this years Institute for Future Legislators. This summer we spent our weekends learning about what it takes to work in politics. I am so pleased with all of the growth from our cohort and the friendships we made throughout the summer. This program has only stoked the already burning fire within my belly and solidified my long term intentions to enter into politics. Thank you to the fantastic facilitators and the UBC Centre for the Study of Democratic Institutions. We could not have gotten through this program without all of the fantastic coaching and expert panelists.

After a full week on the job, I am pleased to say that I have begun my tenure as the Member Relations and Engagement Coordinator at the Physiotherapy Association of BC.

I will be representing Physiotherapists across the province and am the first point of contact. I am so excited to have started working for an influential non-profit within the Health Care sector. I’ll have the opportunity to work directly with the CEO and Director of Operations, planning events and supporting Physiotherapists all over BC.

As the next stage of my own professional development, it is my intention to continue being an advocate for those who need it most. My role with PABC will allow me to hone my skills as an advocate and build upon my experiences in health care over the past year. It will also give me valuable tools within non-profits that will be vital for my long term plans and aspirations.

I’m so thankful for the opportunities I was given at St Paul’s and with Providence Health Care. The support I received this spring, and the fantastic professional development has allowed me to feel comfortable transitioning to this new role. I’ll be staying on in a greatly reduced capacity, but supporting in whatever way I can and as time permits.

Here’s to the next chapter!

Cultural Society left with questions unanswered after presentation to council 13/07/2021

To help during this heatwave we've extended the hours of the Rotary Spray Park! The park is now available for use from 8 am until 10 pm until further notice.

Remember, the North Peace Leisure Pool and Pomeroy Sport Centre are available for cooling down if needed.

Here are a few other tips to beat the heat from Northern Health:

💦 Drink plenty of fluids. Drink extra water even before you feel thirsty and if you are active on a hot day. Avoid beverages that contain caffeine or alcohol as these lead to dehydration.

🆒 Keep cool. Stay indoors in air-conditioned houses and buildings such as malls, community centres, arenas and shops. At temperatures above 30°C (86°F), fans alone while helpful may not be able to prevent heat-related illness.

⛱👒 Wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing and a wide-brimmed hat, or use an umbrella for shade.

🚗🚫🐶👶 Never leave children or pets alone in a parked car. Temperatures can rise to 52°C (125°F) within 20 minutes inside a vehicle when the outside temperature is 34° C (93°F). Leaving the car windows slightly open will not keep the inside of the vehicle at a safe temperature.

☀️🧴 Avoid sunburn. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher on exposed skin and an SPF 30 lip balm. Remember, sunscreen will protect against the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays but not from the heat.

Response from the Mayor on the North Peace Cultural Centre takeover. It would appear that the community was loud enough to elicit a response.

Internal Error 21/06/2021

Addressed to Mayor Ackerman and Fort St John City Council

On June 18, I along with many other artists from the Peace Region were caught completely off guard to the letter by City CAO Milo MacDonald in regards to the current management arrangement. While not intimately familiar with the current discussions between the City of Fort St John. and the North Peace Cultural Society, I am concerned with the lack of transparency around the decision made by council in a closed door meeting.

The North Peace Cultural Society and the Culture Centre are integral parts of the Fort St John community, with countless programming, cultural events, performances and more being undertaken under their guidance. I, like many others in the Peace Region, have called the North Peace Cultural Centre my second home for many many years. Musical theatre and improv performances in high school at the Cultural Centre were the hallmark of my childhood.

The City needs to do more to explain their positions and communicate with the arts community in a more transparent and equitable manner. Per the old arrangement, the City must give the North Peace Cultural Society at least 12 months notice in order to terminate the arrangement. I am calling on the City to re-enter talks in good faith, engage in open community dialogue, and give the Society the respect it so rightfully deserves in our community.

I encourage everyone who is concerned about the future of the North Peace Cultural Centre to write letters to the Mayor and Fort St John City Council, with the email link below.

It’s taken me sometime to come up with the right words. The Terror Attack in London, Ontario against an innocent Muslim family is as despicable as it is horrifying. I wish to express my heartfelt condolences to the family, and the young man who was sent to the hospital has been in my thoughts all week.

This must be called what it was: a Racist and Islamophobic Terrorist Attack. This past year, I have been working hard to draw attention to Racism in Canada, focusing primarily on the plights of Asian-Canadians in the Pandemic, and our Indigenous communities. This latest attack merely highlights the tiers of Canadian society that exists today.

White Supremacy and Racism are some of the most pressing issues facing our Country. Enough is enough. We need to do more to support those whom have been marginalized for far too long. Canada claims to be a multicultural and accepting society, however the attack in London shows us we have a lot more work to do before we can claim such a title.

We can do more, and we must. The opportunity for change has never been more ripe, and we need to send a strong message to our elected leaders that enough is enough. I encourage everyone to write a letter to your City Councillors, MLAs, and MPs to demand stronger action. Honeyed words or “thoughts and prayers” only goes so far. It is time for action.
