North Carolina is a Hikers Paradise!
The United States has a handful of really fun, character-filled small mountain cities that are worth visiting themselves, much less for all of the amazing country that surrounds them. Jackson Hole, Wyoming; Bozeman, Montana; Durango, Colorado; Bend, Oregon; Boulder, Colorado; Flagstaff, Arizona; and – wait for it! – Asheville, North Carolina. Asheville is surrounded by two hallmark features of the Appalachian Mountains – Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Mountains. This area boasts the most ecologically diverse forests in North America, mountains with huge vertical relief, stunning viewpoints, the famous Appalachian Trail, unique wildlife and much, much more.
Our recommendations for enjoying this area are to stay at a hotel in Asheville and enjoy day hikes to the various areas around the city, or to secure permits and embark on a backpacking trip in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Appalachian Trail is very worth hiking, as it often follows the highest ridges with the best views, but in terms of overnight camping it requires staying in shelters that are crowded and often overrun with rodents. Instead, we advise choosing routes that follow the Appalachian Trail but have you in campsites without shelters. Bottom line, Asheville is a phenomenal hiking destination and one we strongly recommend adding to your master list of adventure.

This is a Great Tip From KOA.com!!
MAKE A LANTERN OUT OF A HEADLAMP AND A JUG OF WATER
All you need is your headlamp and a gallon jug of water or large water bottle. Any translucent bottle will do, but the coolest effect comes from the type of plastic that is not completely transparent, but rather that slightly cloudy color that allows you to see water sloshing around inside.
When it gets dark, strap the headlamp to the side of the jug so that the beam is facing inward. The jug of water transforms into a cool, glowing orb that casts light in all directions! This works because the water in the jug spreads the light, which then is dispersed further by the milky plastic of the container.
This makeshift lantern works great anywhere you need ambient light. Whether you need to look for something inside your tent, clean up the picnic table, or start a campfire, your night just got a whole lot easier.

The beauty of Canyonlands National Park barely feels real. It’s almost hard to comprehend how the desert — a place that many believe to be desolate and empty — contains so much magnificence and depth.
The area was shaped by rivers that still wind through the park today, reaching a confluence where you can watch the dark water of the Green River mixing with the red silty water of the Colorado River.
Standing at Grandview Point, staring at hundreds of miles of canyons, towers, and seemingly infinite layers, is an experience everyone should enjoy. And although some parts of the park, Grandview Point included, are easy to access by road, most of Canyonlands is remote and hard to get to except by foot, bike, or 4×4 vehicle. This guide to Canyonlands National Park will give you tips for where to stay, when to go, and what to do.

Hike the 3 Fingered Jack Loop!
This moderately easy and short loop route around Three Fingered Jack offers nearly unending mountain and lake views. You’ll not only get up close and personal with craggy Three Fingered Jack as you circumnavigate the peak, but you’ll also catch glimpses of the surrounding Cascade Range volcanoes around every corner. Over half of the route coincides with the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, which tends to be well-graded and maintained. And since it’s less than 24 miles, this trip is doable in just a couple of days.
The majority of the trail traverses land that was ravaged by the B&B Complex Wildfire in 2005. The lack of tree cover lends itself to intense exposure at times, but the stands of white ghost trees are eerie and strikingly beautiful in their own right. The openness due to the lack of brush also makes it possible to see distant views of Mt. Washington, Jefferson, and the Three Sisters for much of the way.
