Crumbling Roads Australia

Highlighting the magnitude of the challenges facing our rural and regional road network. We deserve and need a safe, fit-for-purpose road network!

Anyone who drives on our non-metro roads knows how bad our road network is. After flooding and now with harvest and holiday traffic we are now watching it crumble to the point of failure before our eyes. This page is attempting to build a crowd-sourced, publicly available map of the magnitude of the damage to our rural and regional road network across Australia and highlight the urgent need for st

First attempt at this page/concept not quite fit for purpose. I've left it up because I think I've got a plan b. I just need to find some time to iron out a few kinks.

You don't have to spend a lot of time driving on rural and regional roads in this country to realise there's a big problem.
There has been evidence of a structural problem with our road maintenance that goes well beyond individual administrations for some time, but now it feels like what we're seeing is a large-scale failure happening in real-time.
I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling frustrated and angry but what can we all actually do?
Well, there are a few other options that I'll detail below, but this page is an attempt to address the specific issue of highlighting the sheer scale of the problem and avoiding the risk of a "silos of responsibility" type thinking that I would suggest is partly responsible for us ending up in this situation in the first place.
I am hoping to do this by crowd-sourcing road damage locations, details and images from around Australia and making them all publicly available on one map.
I am 100% sure individual administrations (councils and state authorities,) have a fair amount of knowledge of their own problems, but that doesn't easily add up to the kind of big-picture thinking that will be needed to start addressing this nationally. It also means that us, the voting public, can't access any meaningful picture of the scale of the problem or apply the pressure in a knowledgeable way to our elected representatives across all 3 of the levels of government that will need to collaborate to get anywhere with a problem of this scale.
So, don't get angry..... (or actually maybe do get angry)..... but let's get constructive with that anger and find ways to send meaningful messages to our leaders.
Please click on one of the links in this timeline or the "Contact Us" button at the top to start sharing the potholes etc that are driving you mad as you drive about the nation.

We deserve a fit-for-purpose, safe road network.
What this is not going to be.
- a comprehensive or entirely accurate record of all problems.
- a chance to bash individual administrations. (The problem is bigger than any one of them, let's try and be constructive.)
Other options.
For an individual problem that needs attention, I've found the Snap Send Solve app useful.
Write to the federal senate committee currently taking submissions on this very topic. https://www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_Business/Committees/House/Regional_Development_Infrastructure_and_Transport
Write to your local state or federal member or local government representative politely refusing to be fobbed off by who's responsibility is what specific road and asking for big picture solutions.
Rant Over.
Like and share this page and submit locations, and let's see if we can take this somewhere useful.
Cheers
Bob the Beardie
