COLOSSIANS 3:1-11 (KJV)

"1. If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

2. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

3. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

4. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

5. Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

6. For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:

7. In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.

*THE MESSAGE:*

Everyone knows that you do not eat bananas until they turn yellow. The internal transformation of the fruit inside the peel is what causes the yellowing effect indicating when the fruit is ripe.

Because we are God's people, the work of Jesus changes our lives from the inside out. His grace transforms our hearts and minds, overflowing to our actions.

As we meditate on today's passage, we see how Paul called on the brethren in Colosse, by the Spirit of God, to live a life conformed to the image of Christ.

Jeremiah did his best to warn his people that terrible things would happen unless they changed their ways. They did not listen to him but put him in prison.

Just as it was revealed to him by God, the cruel Babylonian army came and destroyed Jerusalem and carried the people as slaves to Babylon. They killed the king’s sons and all the nobles. They removed the king’s eyes and took him as a captive to Babylon.

While going through the city, the captain of the Babylonian army found Jeremiah in the prison and brought him before the Babylonian king. He looked at him and surprisingly told his officers to be kind to Jeremiah!

God was in charge! He was not going to allow his faithful prophet to be killed. God made sure that Jeremiah survived and was not killed.

*It is comforting to know that, as a child of God, He is with you wherever you go. He will lead you and care for you in any situation – just like He did to Jeremiah.*

🔑📖```KEY VERSE:``` _*"But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed” (JAMES 1:25).*_

*Charles Spurgeon said, “When you see a man with a great deal of religion displayed in his shop window, you may depend upon it if he keeps a very small stock of it within”. In other words, men are great in acting religion but much less in practicing it.*

*The message of James to believers is to first become hearers of the word and then go ahead and do what they have heard. Until then, they will be fake professors at best. Their willingness to do what God says every time is the way to spiritual blessings. The things God expects them to do are clear from the passage. They should be good listeners who are slow to respond to criticisms. They should bridle their tongues, keep themselves unspotted from the world and take care of the fatherless and widows.*

*When Christians hear but fail to do what the word of God says, they bring ridicule to the name of the Lord. Paul says bluntly, “For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written” (Romans 2:24), in reference to people who only hear but fail to do what God wants them to do. It is not enough to call oneself a Christian; it is more important to obey the word of God always.*

*People will listen to Christians more if we conduct ourselves in more dignifying manners. The man or woman who fears the Lord is a living testimony anytime, anywhere. It is not enough to read and listen to the word of God. After reading and hearing, we must go ahead to do what the Word says.*

Danny got back from school very hungry and tired. His mom told him to exercise a little patience and go take a shower as she gets the food ready. Danny felt that would take some time. He quickly took a part of the food from the pot and got his tongue burnt.

Danny could not even eat the food thereafter because of the sore in his mouth. He could not endure a little discomfort of hunger. He lacked an important virtue referred to as longsuffering. This virtue is also known as self-control.

If we do not have self-control, we become slaves to what controls us. It can be food, games, gist, chatting with friends or sleeping so much that you don’t want to wake up early enough for personal prayers or devotions.

*Jesus, our perfect example, demonstrated longsuffering when He endured suffering in order to save us from sin. We can look to Jesus and pray to be more like Him in every way including the ability to suffer long, be patient and endure hardship for His sake.*

*A Rift is described as a serious disagreement that disrupts good relations. Harriet B. Braiker insists that, “Conflict can and should be handled constructively; when it is, relationships benefit. Conflict avoidance is ‘not’ the hallmark of a good relationship. On the contrary, it is a symptom of serious problems and of poor communication.”*

*Conflict can arise everywhere and anywhere because all of us have our own interests, personalities, thought processes and reactions. As believers, it is wise to question the situation, analyze and resolve the problem with prayer, God’s Word and Spirit guidance, rather than letting it linger.*

*We can resolve conflicts by accommodating, collaborating, and making compromises. Our memory verse states that in times of rift, we need to forgive one another. We need to be kind and tenderhearted as disagreements are not resolved if each of the contending parties remains bitter and unforgiving.*

*If you are a mediator, listen actively with empathy and avoid partiality, so that the outcome would be adjudged to be fair and just by all. Christians should endeavour to “… live peaceably with all men” (Romans 12:18).*

Ephesians 1:19,20 (TLB)

Jesus told His disciples that the world would hate them. They would be “as sheep in the midst of wolves.” They would be arrested, scourged, and brought before governors and kings. Even their loved ones would persecute them. As the world hated and persecuted Him, so it would treat His servants. Thousands of Christians have learned the secret of contentment and joy in trial. Some of the happiest Christians I have met have been life-long sufferers. They have had every reason to sigh and complain, being denied so many privileges and pleasures that they see others enjoy, yet they have found greater cause for gratitude and joy than many who are prosperous, vigorous, and strong.

In all ages, Christians have found it possible to maintain the spirit of joy in the hour of trial. In circumstances that would have felled most men, they have so completely risen above them that they actually have used the circumstances to serve and glorify Christ.

Lord Jesus, keep us ever mindful of the need to rejoice in You constantly; to go beyond the circumstance, no matter how desperate, and to see You as our hope and joy.
