WOOD DUCK BOX UPDATE!
They made it through the wind storm!
FUN FACT: Did you know Wood duck hens pluck down there breast feathers to line there nest!?
They're also the only North American duck that produces 2 broods a year. How nifty is that!?
Making safe healthy nesting ares will help to improve these chances.
Maintaining waterfowl habitats may seem small but to these birds it can make all the difference!
FUN FACT:
The average Wood duck clutch is 6-16 eggs that incubate for about 37 days and nest for 50 to 70 days.
*Boxes don't need to be perfect but the proper depth and hole size of the box is important.
* Simple pet bedding and/or wood shavings is ideal for nesting box base. Do not use sawdust. It can plug up the ducks air way.
* If possible make boxes a light color to avoid overheating from the sun. (Mine are dark, but the next batch is light) I've heard positive results from both.
* Cedar is the best lumber for the job! But spare lumber will do the job and is better than nothing.
* Climbing runs should be placed so the little fluffs can climb out when the time comes!
*Be mindful of any stains or paint used because it can be potentially toxic to the birds. If possible avoid painting the inside.
*The blue print below is the print I used. It is a super easy project and very fun to do with your kids!
*Learning what works and doesn't work is all a part of the journey. Never be afraid to try. If you fail, try again. If ducks don't take to your boxs re-adjust and try somthing different.
* Please be sure to speack with your local wildlife tech about what is allowed in your area *
