Let’s talk Australian Shepherds for a moment.
I was approached a few nights ago by a woman asking me if my dog was a Merle.
I was a bit taken back by this question because when you look at her you can clearly see that she is a Red Tri Colour. That being said yes an Australian Shepherd can carry a “Phantom or Cryptic” Merle gene that is not expressed or visible (I will touch more in-depth on this at a later time) - but that would be difficult to determine without genetic testing . I am no expert nor will I ever claim to be- but having researched the breed, coat colours and common genetics as well as diseases prior to getting an Aussie I wanted to dig a little deeper on why she would be so confident that my dog was a Merle.
I asked why she would think that she was a Merle and she replied that because she has a blue eye that means she’s a Merle- but it is far from being that simple.
I kindly educated the stranger on the basics of Aussie coat colour and eye colour genetics as well as the implications of breeding double Merle’s. In closing I caution her to seek her knowledge from reputable sources and to familiarize herself with Aussie genetics prior to breeding 🙃
Started our morning off bringing our bull W***y back into our pasture after he so kindly reminded us of the gate that we have been meaning to fix.. Thanks W***y 🙃
On an unrelated note here’s Elsie and Rosie ☀️
Happy May Long weekend! 🌼
It’s been a long day 😴 intro post and story on this little one’s way into the world coming tomorrow ✨
This is the look Ruthie gives when she hears people buy highland cattle canvases from big box stores instead of small businesses - last chance to jump on this order 🤪
Planning to place an order for canvases tomorrow - let me know if you would like to up your home Decor game with a canvas of our cute cows 🥰
A mothers love; Happy Mothers Day 💕 Here are some of our sweet Mamas
Now accepting fuzzy babies- until then you’ll find me looking at last years fresh calf photos.
This is our only calf from last year off my favourite Cow Ruthie 💛 He is now a steer and his name is Stew 🥴 Do with that information what you please.
Happy Canadian Ag Day 🇨🇦 Go eat some Beef 🤪
This year we decided to give the Quiet Wean a try.
This little nose tab allowed us to keep Stew on the same pasture as his mama through the whole weaning process.
How it works : When a calf lifts it’s head to go and nurse, the teat is blocked by the tab. When the calf drops it’s head to graze the tab falls forward allowing them to eat.
By not having to separate cow and calf you can minimize stress and bawling ( the calf calling for it’s mother) Both of these - combined with harsh weather can predispose calves to secondary illness.
This guys weaning went about as smooth as we could have hoped for.
I can not get over how absolutely stunning this little piece of art is. This will be near and dear to my heart for a very long time. So very thankful for my talented and thoughtful friend 💛
Nothing clever to say today but here’s Ruthie looking dapper as usual ✨
Happy Sunday Folks ☀️
Somebody want to take Alberta out of the deep freeze please ❄️
Remember when I said something exciting was coming. - let’s give that something a timeline… only 3 more days to wait ✨
The month before Christmas usually feels like quite the lull - but for us it’s full of excitement to come… Don’t worry, you’ll see 🙊
We Remember - When you count your blessings today, go ahead and count them twice.
I know you didn’t ask - but Elsie was my hair inspo to go dark for winter 🤎
Sweatshirt and wild rag season is upon us ✨
As I mentioned earlier, we have a few crewnecks still up for grabs
Say it louder for the people in the back!!
Someone want to tell Stew he doesn’t have to hit the middle part quite so hard.
Decided to upgrade our driveway sign for our three year anniversary 🖤
I can’t emphasize enough how impressed I am at this piece of work done by Moosehead Metalworks
Because these just really didn’t get the attention they deserve..
