Reviewing the best mid-range Android smartphones of Summer 2022 with the best camera tech, gaming performance and more, for a budget of £400 and under. From the Pixel 6a and Nothing Phone 1 to Samsung's Galaxy A53 5G and Xiaomi's Redmi Note 11 Pro Plus (plus the Poco F4). These are my favourite budget-friendly mid-range phones you can buy in the UK!
If you're after an even cheaper handset, check out my reviews and round-ups of the greatest Android smartphones under £300 and £200 too.

Coming up with my top 10 was quite tricky this far into 2022. Manufacturers like Google, Nothing, Samsung, Xiaomi and Realme all offer a selection of compelling smartphones at a mid-range asking price. The Pixel 6a is still the best around for camera performance but rivals like the OnePlus Nord 2T aren't far behind. Recent additions such as the Nothing Phone 1 are also compelling, with unique features like wireless charging.

That Samsung Galaxy A53 5G is lovable, although the gaming performance isn't as good as last year's A52s, so you may be tempted to look back instead. Meanwhile the Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro Plus is a bit of a mouthful but also a great smartphone, boasting impressive specs for a budget-friendly cost. For less cash you can also grab the Note 11 and regular Pro (check out my full comparison). And that Poco F4 is one of my favourites for gaming grunt.

Realme's excellent 9 Pro Plus and GT Master Edition are also well worth a squint. So many to consider, so which is your personal favourite?

Unboxing the Vivo V25 5G, including camera review, gaming tests, full specs of the UK model and what's different vs the V23 and the V25 Pro. Once again, we have one of the best budget camera smartphones of 2022 - the Vivo V25 5G can pump out good looking pics and respectable 4K video. I've spent a couple of days with this affordable phone and here's the full skinny.
Now, in one way this smartphone is a downgrade vs the V23, namely the performance. Mediatek's Dimensity 920 chipset has been replaced with a 900, but thankfully everyday running is still smooth. Gaming is also possible on Call of Duty, PubG and Genshin Impact, as long as you aren't expecting lush visuals and perfect frame rates. The Vivo V25 5G even serves up a proper gamer mode. If you want, you can upgrade to the V25 Pro with even more grunt.

Battery life is excellent and the media chops are also solid. You've got a sharp, slick AMOLED screen with HDR10 Plus support, although the mono speaker setup is quite basic. Storage is expandable and sadly there's no headphone jack - despite those bundled earphones!

The Vivo V25 5G also boasts a funky colour-changing design which I like, despite the fat iPhone-style edges.

Reviewing the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, an upgraded ultra-sized foldable smartphone boasting solid camera tech, impressive specs, strong gaming chops - and mediocre battery life. I've been testing the Samsung Z Fold 4 for almost two weeks now so here's my final verdict.
Grab yours here (US):
Or here (UK):

This is one of the biggest phones of 2022, metaphorically and most definitely literally. It's also one of the best for multi-tasking, thanks to that enormous internal screen, which is fine for movies and gaming too. The Galaxy Z Fold4's rear camera is a triple lens setup with zoom and ultra-wide options and loads of modes. You also have a couple of selfie cams to choose from to shoot pics of your mug.

Samsung's OneUI behaves pretty well and allows full customisation of the external and internal desktops. The Z Fold 4's cover screen is fine for simple messaging and the like, but most tasks work better on the main display. Performance is dependable, with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 running the show - so even games like Genshin Impact run well on the Samsung Z Fold 4.

I'm hoping to review the Z Flip 4 soon, and stay tuned for my Watch 5 series coverage too! In the meantime, are you tempted by this mighty foldable smartphone?

Reviewing Samsung's Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, one of the best new premium smartwatches of 2022, with its massive battery and rugged design. I've been testing the Samsung Watch 5 Pro for almost a fortnight and here's my verdict on the everyday experience.
Grab yours now in the US:
And the UK:

This 45mm model boasts several upgrades over the regular smartwatch although lacks the rotating bezel of the Watch 4 Classic. You've got a bigger cell for improved battery life (even if it's still lacking vs Huawei rivals). That titanium body and enhanced sapphire screen are also impressively tough, so the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is one of the most durable offerings in 2022.

Google's Wear OS is again on board, but with those Samsung services such as Pay and Bixby instead. You also have dedicated fitness and exercise tracking tools which tie directly into Samsung Health. So the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is certainly best suited to Sammy fans with a Galaxy smartphone, those Buds TWS, etc.

Check out my reviews of other fresh smartwatches and I'll be testing out the regular Watch 5 from today, stay tuned for the final verdict in a couple of weeks - including which is best!

The Sony Xperia 5 IV is just one of many new smartphones launching next week at IFA 2022, boasting some slick camera tech and premium specs like the Xperia 1 Mark 4. Ahead of my unboxing and review here's a scan through all of the Xperia 5 IV leaks and news.
IFA should also see the unveiling of a new Nokia X-series phone, possibly the X21, offering mid-range specs and eco-friendly design at a respectable price. You can also expect more Nokia G and C series smartphones, offering a more budget friendly option.

But the Sony Xperia 5 IV isn't the only premium blower launching next week. Oppo is also unveiling the Reno 8 Pro 5G for Europe and the UK, boasting the same (or at least very similar) great camera tech as the Find X5 Pro. And Honor will be revealing some new phones, tablets, laptops and other bits!

I'll hopefully be bringing you lots of reviews and hands-on action with these devices and more next week.

Unboxing the Nokia 5710 XpressAudio keypad feature phone, with a 24-hour review of this music oriented mobile. With its built-in Bluetooth wireless earbuds, the Nokia 5710 XpressAudio is certainly a unique 2022 phone, although battery life isn't the best. It's also rather limited in some ways, such as the lack of WiFi support.
However, if you want the convenience of Bluetooth buds concealed in a back flap, this could be the one for you! HMD has included a wireless FM radio and MP3 player, although there's sadly no music streaming support on the Nokia 5710. And you'll want to expand the meagre on-board storage with microSD if you want to actually carry some tunes around.

This XpressAudio feature phone sports all of the usual tools and apps, including calendar, alarm, games and internet browsing via the Opera Mini app. However, in my first day with the Nokia 5710, that battery was fully drained - so you'll want to pack that micro USB charger (blech) when you hit the road!

Unboxing the Honor Pad 8 budget Android tablet, plus hands-on review of the gaming smarts, media chops and other features. The Honor Pad 8 could be one of the best affordable tabs of 2022 if you don't want to go iPad, with a UK asking price under £300.
Powered by the Snapdragon 680, this tablet can cope with all of the usual shenanigans including web browsing, media streaming and even some light gaming. Genshin Impact can be played on the lowest detail settings with a reasonable frame rate, for instance. The Honor Pad 8's 12-inch screen is crisp and pumps out attractive visuals for this budget price, while the 8-speaker setup is also great stuff.

You don't have expandable storage or LTE/5G support here sadly, while there's also no headphone jack. So yeah, it's Bluetooth all the way for your 'phones.

The Honor Pad 8 also offers dual 5MP cameras, and MagicUI 6 on top of Android 12. This adds in the usual extra features and thankfully not much crapware to delete!

Unboxing the Nokia G60 5G, a budget-friendly stock Android smartphone that's cheaper vs the X30, boasting a 50MP primary camera and enough gaming grunt to run Genshin Impact (just about). The specs are decent, but is the Nokia G60 5G one of the best mid-range phones of 2022? This hands-on review tests out the main features, camera capabilities and more.
While the more expensive X30 sports a UK price tag around £500, this G-series smartphone will cost you just £300. Despite this, both mobiles are powered by the Snapdragon 696 - so you can get gaming on the Nokia G60 as long as you don't push it too hard. PubG and Call of Duty play well, while Genshin does struggle at times, even on lower graphics settings.

You get a respectable camera setup that can shoot good looking photos in most conditions, although like its rivals, this phone struggles at night. Video can be captured at FHD resolution at 30 or 60FPS.

Specs also include a basic IPS screen and mono speaker setup, although the Nokia G60 5G serves up a headphone jack and reliable Bluetooth streaming. So are you tempted by this affordable stock Android smartphone, with its recycled materials and strong software support?

The Nokia X30 5G is a £399 mid-range smartphone boasting planet-saving design, 50MP camera tech and respectable specs. This hands-on review shows off the Nokia X30 5G's main features, stay tuned for a more in-depth video!
That specification isn't bad for this price, although the performance isn't as tight as some other phones from Nothing and Poco. Qualcomm's Snapdragon 695 runs the show, so you'll be able to enjoy some light gaming on PubG, CODM etc. Just don't expect to run Genshin Impact with a smooth frame rate.

The Nokia X30 5G serves up a simple dual lens rear camera, with a 50MP primary sensor. This includes an updated night mode and plenty of other typical features, although no 4K video recording.

You also have a water-resistant IP67 design, while the 4200mAh battery should hopefully see you through a full day. The Nokia X30 5G has an OLED screen but only mono speakers, and there's no microSD memory card support to expand that storage. Thankfully you'll get at least 128GB space if you pay that £399 UK asking price.

Unboxing the Poco M5 with a full review of the camera tech, gaming performance, battery life and more! I've been using this 2022 budget smartphone as my full-time phone for a few days, so here's my Poco M5 verdict from a UK perspective.
Precise price and release date info will be added asap, but here's a link to purchase:

Rocking similar specs to the Poco M4 Pro, except without that 5G support, this Xiaomi MIUI mobile is capable in most areas. That 50MP camera struggles in ambient light but copes well with HDR situations, certainly compared with some budget phones. Plus the Poco M5 serves up incredible battery life, good enough to last two full days between charges if you keep it simple.

Performance is good enough for gaming on PubG, Call of Duty and your average Android titles. Just keep the graphics scaled down and you'll get a respectable frame rate. For your media shenanigans, the Poco M5 doesn't surprise. It's a simple IPS screen, plus a mono speaker setup - although you do also get a headphone jack and Bluetooth 5.3 streaming.

Reviewing the best budget smartphones of 2022 with a price under £200 here in the UK, including the top camera phones, gaming mobiles, 5G devices and more. I've fully tested a selection of favourite cheap blowers including the Moto G62, Xiaomi Poco M4 Pro and Redmi Note 11, Nokia G50 and G21, plus Realme's latest Androids. Check out my budget smartphone unboxing videos and reviews right here on Tech Spurt to see more on the gaming, camera, battery life and beyond.
This round-up of the best affordable UK mobiles starts with Motorola mobiles, including the Moto G62 and the Moto G31 with its OLED screen (a rare feature at this budget price). It’s one of the best for media fans, despite the limited performance. Alternatively the Moto G22 is also a great option on a tight budget.

The Nokia G21 and G11 are the best for stock Android fans who want the reassurance of future updates. Meanwhile Xiaomi has several smartphones in this round-up of the best budget blowers in 2022, including the Redmi Note 11. One of my personal favourites with fairly dependable camera tech, aside from the poor video recording support. For a bit more money you can grab the Redmi Note 11 Pro on sale occasionally.

Don't sleep on Poco either - that M4 Pro 5G is still an absolute blinder, but don't bother with the C40, which is poor for that price.

Reviewing Samsung's Galaxy Watch 5 (40mm), one of the best new premium smartwatches of 2022 and more affordable alternative vs the Pro. I've been testing the Samsung Watch 5 40mm for over a fortnight and here's my verdict on the battery life, Wear OS experience etc.
Grab yours now in the US:
And the UK:

This 40mm model may not sport a massive battery like the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, or the super durable design, but it's still tough enough to survive everyday life. You will need to charge this Samsung smartwatch every single day however. On the flip side, this is much cheaper than the Pro, and still packs all of the great health tracking features and Wear OS tools (with those Samsung services such as Pay and Bixby instead of Google's alternatives).

Those dedicated fitness and exercise tracking tools on the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 tie directly into Samsung Health. So this smartwatch is certainly best suited to Sammy fans with a Galaxy smartphone, those Buds TWS, etc.

Unboxing the Huawei MatePad Pro 11-inch tablet, fresh for 2022, with a hands-on review of the gaming performance, Harmony OS features, M Pencil stylus and more. The Huawei MatePad Pro 2022 is a capable multi-tasking work tablet that can convert into a 2-in-1 laptop style device using a keyboard. However, despite an upgraded screen and solid battery life, the lack of Google support remains an issue.
Thankfully there's always Twerk Battle...

If you're already a Huawei fan then you'll get more from the MatePad Pro 11 2022, thanks to Super Device. This allows you to connect seamlessly and share files with other shiny stuff like smartphones and earbuds. This tablet is also good for creative users with its sharp, bright display with accurate colour reproduction and M Pencil stylus support. As long as you can get the editing apps you like downloaded, of course.

Performance is smooth enough with a Snapdragon 888 or 870 on board. Battery life is also impressive, while the Huawei MatePad Pro 11 is skinny enough to slip with ease into backpacks etc.

Unboxing the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra, a 200MP camera phone boasting flagship specs in a slender frame. This hands-on review tests the gaming smarts, camera features and runs through the Moto Edge 30 Ultra's UK specs, ahead of my final verdict.
You can grab this Motorola smartphone right now for £749, so it'll be a proper Pixel 7 rival.

Those optics are obviously one of the most headline-grabbing features on the Edge 30 Ultra, but are they really all that? I've been testing for over 24 hours now and so far this is a capable camera phone, one of the better in 2022 for low light shooting. My full review will examine the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra in greater detail however, so stay tuned!

Everyday performance is slick thanks to the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset. Likewise, gamers will enjoy smooth playback on Genshin Impact, PubG and other intensive Android titles. Motorola has also added in dedicated gaming tools, to help give you the edge.

Battery life and the everyday experience will be covered in a week's time, but for now the Moto Edge 30 Ultra is looking like a strong option for anyone after a stock Android flagship smartphone. Ahead of the Pixel 7 launch, that is.

The Xiaomi 12T Pro and regular 12T 5G smartphones are apparently due to launch in the UK imminently, with upgraded camera tech and specs vs the original Xiaomi 12 phones. Lots of leaks and rumours about the Xiaomi 12T and Pro have hit the internet this week so here's a round-up, hopefully an unboxing and review of both coming soon!
Sadly it appears that the standard model won't be pleasingly compact, unlike the 12. Both the Xiaomi 12T Pro and the regular version will be 6.67-inch beasts, although that also means whopping great 5000mAh batteries. You'll get different camera tech depending on your choice, with the Pro serving up a 200MP primary sensor like the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra.

The Xioami 12T will serve up 67W fast charging, while that's upgraded to 120W on the Pro. And both come packing OLED displays and a sleek design, similar to the Redmi K50.

Unboxing the Motorola Edge 30 Fusion, a £500 Moto smartphone that looks like the Ultra, but serves up slightly downgraded specs including a 50MP main camera. This hands-on Motorola Edge 30 Fusion review shows off the camera smarts, gaming performance on Genshin Impact, Moto features and more!
Although there's no 200MP optics on here, this phone can still shoot good looking photos as long as the lighting isn't too dodgy. You've still got 8K video smarts as well, or 4K at 60FPS. The Edge 30 Fusion doesn't have a dedicated portrait lens but I'm happy with the results all the same.

Gamers will enjoy the smooth performance, courtesy of Qualcomm's Snapdragon 888 Plus chipset. It's a year old but it still packs some serious grunt for PubG, Genshin and anything else you fancy. The Motorola Edge 30 Fusion also serves up a 4400mAh battery, with 68W wired charging - although there's no wireless charging, unlike the Ultra and Neo.

So is this one of the best mid-range smartphones for £500? Well, it has strong competition from the Nothing Phone 1, Pixel 6 etc but it's certainly a fun and gorgeous blower. Check out my reviews of alternative handsets here on Tech Spurt (if you want to, obvs).

Unboxing the Motorola Edge 30 Neo, one of the best mid-range smartphones if you want a compact option with strong gaming chops and features like wireless battery charging. Although the Pixel 6a is still the greatest for camera action. The Moto Edge 30 Neo is the most budget-friendly of those new Motorola Edge phones and the most mini as well. But it still packs good specs, is a good gamer option and slips into even small pockets, as my hands-on review reveals.
For a UK price of £350 you can have a slick media machine with pOLED screen and Dolby Atmos stereo speakers (although headphones are still of course best). The Motorola Edge 30 Neo can handle Genshin Impact and other intense Android games thanks to its Snapdragon 695 chipset. You'll not be able to play on high detail settings, but gamers should still be happy for this mid-range cost.

That camera sadly is a bit more basic than the Pixel 6a, but the Moto Edge 30 Neo can handle conditions that aren't too taxing. Video recording does top off at 1080p however.

Battery life is respectable, at least so far in my early tests. And you have fast wired charging, plus wireless charge support if you're gonna ditch the cables.

Reviewing the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra, a mega-sized, super-spec flagship smartphone boasting a 200MP camera, 120W battery charging and serious gaming smarts. I've been testing the Moto Edge 30 Ultra as my full-time phone for over a week so here's my final verdict, just before the Pixel 7 Pro is launched!
Check out my reviews of other best Android mobiles of 2022, including Samsung's S22 Ultra and other near 7-inch smartphones.

This Motorola blower made headlines as the first handset with a 200MP camera, and it certainly is a capable shooter. Low light performance is particularly strong, while the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra can also handle HDR situations and capture stunning portraits. The lack of a dedicated telephoto camera is the only issue.

Performance for gaming on Genshin Impact, PubG, CODM etc is another winner. Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 runs the show and you even have that Moto gaming mode to lend a hand.

Battery life is good enough for confident all day play on the Edge 30 Pro, while the 120W fast charging and wireless charge abilities can get you powered up again quickly and easily.

So is the Motorola Edge 30 Pro a worthy alternative phone to the Pixel 7 Pro, Samsung S22 Ultra etc? Well, it's certainly a highly enjoyable option, with very few flaws.

Reviewing the Amazfit GTR 4 watch, a budget-friendly smartwatch that's cheaper than the Samsung and Apple alternatives but with better battery life and full fitness tracking. Is the Amazfit GTR 4 one of the best watches of 2022 for under £200? It's certainly one of the most fully featured and, a few flaws aside, an enjoyable everyday smartwatch.
One of the biggest upgrades for this model is the huge battery, which delivers over a week of life per charge. That means the Amazfit GTR4 is one of the best outside of the Huawei Watch models for longevity. And certainly heaps better than the Samsung Galaxy or Apple options. You still get standard features like an Always On Display, 24 hour heart/SPO2 tracking and sleep tracking. Plus the Amazfit GTR 4 offers impressive satellite tracking and over 150 different exercise types.

On the flip side, this smartwatch isn't as slick as some of the very best. Alexa refused to work for me, despite keeping both watch and app up to date and connected. You also have to pay for a lot of the faces, which is a proper jip.

So are you tempted by the Amazfit GTR 4? Let us know your thoughts below and check out our reviews of the greatest watches you can buy yourself in 2022!

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and the rest of the 2023 flagship phone family leaked a little this week, revealing an Ultra-style design for all three and very familiar specs. Besides a 200MP camera upgrade for the Samsung S23 Ultra, it looks like the series will mostly sport the same optics as the S22 blowers. All three will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, even here in the UK. Meanwhile the other specs, including the battery charging and media chops, will apparently remain the same.
So like the Pixel 7 smartphones which are launching next week, it looks like the Galaxy S23, Plus and Ultra will be an incremental evolution over what we've already got. One for those with older tech who want something with the freshest tech come 2023.

As well as Samsung shenanigans, this week saw Huawei confirm that the Mate 50 Pro Global Edition will be coming to the UK after all. Amazon also launched a load of fresh tech, including the Kindle Scribe and Fire TV Cube 2022. Full unboxing and review shenanigans coming right up!

So what are your feeling on the Samsung Galaxy S23 series, the Mate 50 Pro, and those upcoming Pixel 7 phones? And what exactly would a Spurt Phone look like? Let us know for next week!
