In advance of the historic debate between the two 2024 candidates for United States President, we share this image as a reminder NOT to fall into the trap of judging the female candidate in ways you would not judge the male candidate. There is a lot to be learned tonight if we pay attention!

Thank you Lean In for this share.

If we had a dollar for every time we heard these statements said to a woman running for office, we’d close the for good.

Humor aside, in this cycle, women candidates will encounter an unjust bias that is deeply ingrained. Their qualifications will be doubted, their appearance and speech will be criticized, and they will face negative reactions when asserting themselves. Women of color, like Vice President Harris, will face the additional challenges of and .

As we watched some of the , we were thrilled to get the second of two packages from Victor Rich, Melissa Rich’s dad.

Recall that Victor played a pivotal role in the founding of supersisters cards as Melissa would ask her mom, “Why are there no pictures of girls on [baseball] cards? It isn’t fair!” as she came home from a little league baseball game with her dad in the Spring of 1978..

The first package from the ‘supersisters’ dad” contained a bunch of memorabilia - including several sets of supersisters cards sent to the team in Chicago last week.

The second package contained memorabilia from the . This package dates back to a special trip for Melissa, her brother , and her dad Victor.

Victor knew the real supersisters’ spark came not from a love of baseball, but rather a love of all things Olympics.

Highlights of our trip included:
Women’s swimming
Women’s diving
Women’s Archery
Cycling
Track & Field,
and, of course, women's & men's Gymnastics!

August is a special month for supersisters and this month did not disappoint. We started the month with an August 4th birthday to honor supersisters founder, Lois Rich, age 84.

Lest anyone worry that Lois is slowing down, we want to share that an excited phone call from Lois started the day, August 4th, with a reminder from her that we had less than 3 weeks to find a way to get a set of supersisters cards to Kamala Harris in time for her acceptance of the Democratic party’s Presidential nomination a week ago today. And so… we hustled and we made it happen! Brilliant marketing strategy, Lois!

Wishing a belated Happy August Birthday to Lois Rich and these other original women of supersisters (circa 1979):

Helen Thomas (supersisters card #12) August 4, 1920
Michiko (Miki) Suwa Gorman (supersisters card #46) August 9, 1935
Cindy Nelson (supersisters card #58) August 19, 1955
Leonor K. Sullivan (supersisters card #25) August 21, [ ]
Malvina Reynolds* (supersisters card #34) August 23, [ ]

Speaking of moms…we loved this quote from Kamala Harris from the DNC. “Never let anyone tell you who you are. You SHOW them who YOU are.”

We think Lois and many of the original supersisters would agree with this statement!

Olympic, Paralympic power couple to start new chapter at K-State 29/08/2024

We are just starting to late night binge the in Paris.
Already we are loving what we see.

There is no doubt there will be many written and shared over the next couple of weeks.

From the Paralympic website:
"The Paralympic Games are more than just a sporting event – they offer a unique opportunity to shine a spotlight on sport and disability, inspire individuals, bring about social change, and promote inclusive professional and sports opportunities for people with disabilities."

We think this this Forbes article is a great reminder of how exciting these events will be.

3 Things Audiences Can Learn From The Paralympic Games
https://www.forbes.com/sites/andrewpulrang/2024/03/31/3-things-audiences-can-learn-from-the-paralympic-games/

"Many physically disabled people can do physically strenuous sports, and at a high level of effort and achievement. Disability-adapted or designed sports can be as competitive, demanding, and engaging as “regular” sports. And disabled athletes work hard and want to win...

The Paralympics are not in fact just about participating or raising awareness. It’s about sports – competitive sports."

We can't wait to “meet” (through media coverage of the games) the athletes that will be competing, to get to know them, and to watch them soar. In the meantime, we will start with a reminder of our favorite Power Couple from the Olympic Games that ended just a couple of weeks ago - Tara Davis-Woodhall (Olympic Champion, Long Jump) and Hunter Woodhall (Paralympian).

More greatness through representation!

supersisters was founded in 1978 to inspire youth to learn about women leaders in a fun, accessible format - an opportunity that 4+ decades ago was missing from much of mainstream media, marketing, toys, & textbooks.

While good progress has been made in the decades since the launch of supersisters, it is still true that far fewer women than men are celebrated for their accomplishments & far fewer women feel empowered to realize their potential vs. their male counterparts.

As a result, young girls still have far fewer opportunities to see their potential realized in the generation before them - and the cycle continues…

The systems that brought to life in 1978 remain biased & broken.

To dismantle the many historical barriers to women’s empowerment & to disrupt the cycle in the future, we believe more needs to be done to inspire, create, celebrate, and “fuel” the Legacy Stories of women and girls starting at a young age and continuing through adulthood.

Last night, Kamala Harris spoke about. her vision for creating an “OPPORTUNITY ECONOMY". WE ARE HERE FOR IT!

As we await more information regarding specifics of Harris’ economic plan, is simultaneously working to create:
An engaged worldwide community & unprecedented support system that serves the 1/2 of the world’s population (women and girls) whose superpowers have been underappreciated AND undervalued for far too long!

Join us as we celebrate the past, look to the future & continue to create inspiration, innovation, & impact from the supersisters™ brand for years to come!

It is NOT lost on us, that 104 years ago this past Sunday, (one day before the opening day of the 2024 Democratic National Convention), on August 18, 1920, the General Assembly of the state of Tennessee passed the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution. Four days later, on 8/24/1920 Tennessee’s Governor certified the state’s ratification - giving women of the United States the right to vote.

This year WE WILL USE OUR VOTES to elect the First Woman President of the United States!

Congratulations to !

What a pleasure to watch , the nation’s youngest poet laureate, at the Democratic Natioanl Convention last night. She was ravishing on so many levels.

We launched the new supersisters website not long after Gorman spoke at President Biden’s inauguration. It was so obvious to us that Amanda Gorman would be a beacon for supersisters. She even wears supersisters' colors!

We share this quote from Gorman’s new children’s book Girls on the Rise, a children’s book based on an adapted version of her 2021 poem “We Rise.”

The TIME interviewer states: “The theme is obviously very apropos, so why this poem in this moment?”

Gorman responds; with a short part of her poem:

We are Girl,
Glowing and growing,
Knowing where the wind is
blowing.
We are where change is going.
__________
Gorman tells us “I love this line because it encapsulates how girls are always at the forefront of progress.”

When asked if she would be interested in speaking at the inauguration of Kamala Harris next January, Gorman deflects towards another poet laureate and supersisters’ nominee, .

She says, “That’s totally up to them. If they were to ask, I would think about it, but I honestly think I would love for Joy Harjo to recite. She's an amazing poet, has served as U.S. Poet Laureate, and does incredible research and poetry about Native Americans and that historicity. She really deserves the spot, and the spot necessitates her.”

Why, does Gorman want to share this honor with one of her inspirations?,...because strong women lift other women.

On that note we also love Gorman’s response when the interviewer states:

“I have to tell you, I just saw a tweet that said, “I can't wait to vote for Amanda Gorman for President one day.”

“That's amazing. That's so sweet. Yeah, I'll be back. I'm here for Kamala and Walz this time, and, you know—10 more years, I'll be back.”

We will be ready!

On the morning of the final day of the Democratic National Convention, we re-share a letter written to supersisters in 1980 by a 10-year-old girl.
Dear supersisters,

“I am a 10 year old girl. I would like to be President. I am interested in women’s rights. If you could, would you please send me some info on supersisters trading card[s] and where I can find them?”

This letter was written almost 45 years ago!

We imagine there are some pretty excited young ladies out there watching closely as Kamala Harris prepares to accept the nomination as the Democratic Party's candidate for President of the United States of America duiring this historic election campaign.

We hope to help deliver a resounding victory to Kamala in November, 2024 to show each of these young girls that in fact, they can grow up believing THAT THEY TOO, CAN ONE DAY BE PRESIDENT.

NOW is the time!

Our country deserves a woman President!

Speaking of , there are so many stories to mention from the Track and Field athletes of the . Here are a few of our favorites…

We start with the joyous celebration of the first two athletes to medal [both women and both gold] from the small countries of St Lucia ( ) and Dominica ( ) - which also gives us a chance to celebrate USA 100M sprinter favorite and teammate, & Jamaican longjumper & American .
https://www.facebook.com/share/kLpKQRfziAjTbdnf/?mibextid=WC7FNe

While the “fastest woman in the world” race (100M) was anticipated to be Sha’Carri Richardson’s race (she got silver), Richardson would later come back to help the US 4x100M relay team win gold.

Another member of the 4x100M relay team was , 200M gold medal sprinter, Harvard graduate in neurobiology, Masters grad in Public Health & healthcare clinic volunteer who won over many hearts during these Olympics for her incredible resume off the track as well in these games.
https://www.facebook.com/share/r/6FbcwgU41hpKGfeH/?mibextid=UalRPS

Next, we feature Heptathalete for her tenacity in competition in the face of disappointment.
https://www.facebook.com/share/r/GDbe3Kc6e2DfceFR/?mibextid=UalRPS

There were of course many other women of Track & Field that deserve celebration as well, but we wrap this year’s tribute to the women of track and field with this awesome reflective post from American hurdler, Sydney Mclaughlin-Levrone.
https://www.facebook.com/share/r/rS8hJiL6Zfyth7GW/?mibextid=UalRPS

And then, to keep us grounded in the year in Olympic sports (2024) that we really began to champion our women athletes as people first, we end on a solemn note as we remember the great runner, - who in 2013 became the youngest American track and field athlete to make a World Championships team and later fought to bring attention to her mistreatment and abuse by the coach of her illustrious team.

The U.S. topped the medal table at this year's Olympics -- in large part thanks to the female members of Team USA who won 65% of the country's gold medals! Moreover, of the 126 total medals won by the U.S., 67 were won by women -- a number so large that if American women were their own nation, they would have placed third in the overall medal count behind the full U.S. squad and China. The 26 gold medals won by the American women also set a new record as the most ever won by a women's team in a single Olympics. In an Olympic Games which was hailed as the first in history to reach full gender parity, with women making up 50% of athletes for the first time ever, the women of Team USA helped lead the way!

Meet 90-year-old, Flo Meiler, a track and field star, who is *not* a former Olympic great, but rather an equally inspiring athlete who started training at age 60.

She’s set 35 world records and competed in a range of events like the 50-meter, 100-meter, 400-meter, 110-meter hurdles, 1500-meter, long jump, high jump, triple jump, shot put, discus, javelin, pole vault, and more.

The 10-event Olympic decathlon, crowning the "world's greatest athlete," has not been open to women. Athletes like Flo are working to change that.

Flo remains true to one motto: “Motivation is what gets you started, habit is what keeps you going.”

Talk about and …We turn to track and field.
We remain so inspired by retired American sprinter, , , Allyson Felix (5 Olympic games, 11 Olympic medals, 7 Olympic gold medals).
Although her work this year was off the track, we were reminded of her tremendous Olympic spirit during , the first summer Games in 24 years that Felix was not a competitor. Rather, Felix joined these games as an International Olympic Committee Athletes’ Commission member.
Today we take note of the further impact that Felix has had on the games, her sport and women athletes in general since her retirement.
Long a champion of the rights of women athletes - in particular around pregnancy, childbirth, and motherhood, this year Felix helped champion the first-ever Pampers Nursery in the Athletes Village. The nursery “offered a space for moms to bond with, nurse and play with their babies, helping to alleviate some of the pressures of competition”

Let’s talk about and !
As we celebrated the vault performance of Simone Biles in 2024, many of us conjured up memories of the of young gymnast at the1996 Olympics.
We remember it vividly.
And many of us now see it differently.
We do not see it as any less remarkable. Shrug remains an inspiration. She remains an athlete of epic proportions in a tiny little body.
But we also see it as a problem with the sport...perhaps with many sports...perhaps with many more women’s sports (at least in the past).
Because of what we now know about how the women of gymnastics have too often been pushed beyond their limits, we now have a different perspective as evidenced by the viral post from 2021 of a dad named Byron Heath.
https://www.facebook.com/byron.heath.5/posts/10103799001334604
Heath ends his post with this message to Biles:
“Here's the message I hope we can send to Simone Biles: You are an outstanding athlete, a true role model, and a powerful woman. Nothing will change that. Please don't sacrifice your emotional or physical well-being for our entertainment or national pride. We are proud of you for being brave enough to compete, and proud of you for having the wisdom to know when to step back. Your choice makes you an even better example to our daughters than you were before. WE'RE STILL ROOTING FOR YOU!”
We think that this is what turns a - Simone’s legendary performance in these 2024 games into a .
Congratulations to Biles AND once again to Shrug as we know and understand and value your journey so much more than just your score!

As we watched the Olympic games as much as we could and perused social media when not in front of the TV, we wanted to share some of the great moments that women felt were important to share.

I can't tell you who leads the medal count.

But I can tell you who's stealing spotlight—the women of the Olympics.

Not for the records they're setting (which are many).

Not for the discipline and performance under pressure they're displaying (which is impressive).

The women are winning because they're showing the world what's possible when we support each other with wild abandon.

It's Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles doing the "We're not worthy" Wayne's World bow to Rebeca Andrade on the gymnastics podium after the Brazilian won gold in floor routine.

It's "Katie Squared," the powerhouse duo of US swimmers Katie Ledecky and Katie Grimes, who finished first and fourth respectively in the 800m freestyle, but whose genuine friendship transcends sports.

It's former Olympian Laurie Hernandez in the broadcast booth, her voice dancing with joy as she provides commentary and endearing reaction for the same gymnastics events she competed in as part of Team USA eight years ago in Rio.

It's beach volleyball teammates Sara Hughes and Kelly Cheng holding hands as they change ends on the court.

It's Betty Harp channeling her love to granddaughter Sha'Carri Richardson on the track before the biggest race of her career, just as she has for countless other races over the years.

It's childhood best friends Sarah Bacon and Kassidy Cook capturing the silver medal in synchronized springboard diving and having so much fun on social media together.

It's moms like French judo star Clarisse Agbegnenou and American runner Alysia Montano leading the way for breastfeeding support and the creation of child-friendly spaces for athletes' families.

It's Laos sprinter Silina Pha Aphay coming to the aid of fellow competitor Lucia Moris of South Sudan after she crumpled to the ground during their 100m heat, holding her shoes and telling her to go ahead and cry if she wanted to.

It's all these moments and more highlighting a spirit that goes far beyond the Olympic stage—and means so much more.

The women of the Olympics are showing us what matters, and it's not the world records or gold medals or hightlight reel performances.

It's the heart.
It's the kindness.
It's the support.
It's the grace.
It's the inspiration.
It's the love.
It's the women.

And we're here for every bit of it.

This afternoon, we shipped a package to Chicago!

Thank you to our friends affiliated with the California Democratic Party for offering to share our special package with the team on Thursday as she prepares to accept the nomination for the party’s top billing in the 2024 election.

We sent: 2 mint condition sets of the original 72 supersisters™ cards (circa 1979), 4 limited-edition reprints of the uncut poster featuring the complete set of original 72 supersisters™ cards, 2 copies of the original supersisters™ Teacher’s Guide, supersisters™ pins stickers, and several throwback style supersisters™ shirts featured on our website. And…as promised earlier this week, we also included 2 additional mint condition, Shirley Chisholm supersisters™ cards - with a note asking Kamala to hold one of these cards in her pocket as she accepts the nomination on Thursday.

Much like a young boy might hold a baseball card of their favorite player in their pocket when they head up to bat in little league - taking inspiration from their hero, we hope that Kamala will stop to think of AND will remember that women and girls will be watching her and thinking, “If she can do this, so too, can I…”

Today we celebrate Shirley Chisholm (supersisters card #71). Chisholm was the 1st woman and the 1st African American to run for President as the candidate of a major political party.

We were thrilled to hear Chisholm’s name invoked by opening night of the first night of the DNC, where later this week Kamala Harris will be officially named the Democratic candidate for .

Thank you , , , . , .

Thank you to the young woman, , whom Andy Beshear called “one of the bravest women I have ever met.” (We agree!)

Thank you , , , , , , & other male allies!

Thank you for what you have done for the country. And thank you and for helping to get us excited for what is to come.

Celebrations of Chisholm’s biography - from wikipedia, & from her biography follow.

"In 1964, Chisholm ran for and became the second African American in the New York State Legislature. In 1968 she became the first African American woman in Congress."

"She formally announced her presidential bid on January 25, 1972, in a Baptist church in her district in Brooklyn."

"Discrimination followed Chisholm’s quest for the 1972 Democratic Party presidential nomination. She was blocked from participating in televised primary debates, and after taking legal action, was permitted to make just one speech."

"Her motto and title of her autobiography—Unbought and Unbossed—illustrates her outspoken advocacy for women and minorities during her seven terms in the U.S. House of Representatives."

As we continue to celebrate the historic contribution of women in the , we wanted to reshare this special memory featuring some of our favorite .

In 2019, producers of the invited supersisters’ Lois & Melissa Rich to NYC to meet with several women athletes featured in the original set of .

Interviews with these women & women from organizations that continue to champion equal representation in sports led to the creation of an award-winning radio documentary - centered around the question of whether the concept of is as needed now as it was in 1978.

"supersisters - The Fight to Inspire”

It was a pleasure for the founders of supersisters to meet these women in person. It was meaningful to hear the women’s stories of what it was like to be a top female athlete competing on behalf of the United States at a time when women were still very much underrepresented in sports. These women remain champions of supersisters cards, advocating for the importance of sharing the of accomplished women THEN (1978) & NOW.

Wendy Boglioli, a USA Olympic Swimmer, is known for helping the US win gold in the women's 4×100M freestyle relay at the '76 Montréal Olympics (the only gold medal won by the U.S. women that year amidst East German doping scandals.)

A prominent quote from Boglioli was included in the documentary.
“We all are this family of women. We have undervalued traits that I think are undervalued by men and undervalued by women.
We are collaborators. We are the epitome of teamwork.
Women are so optimistic.
We know what it’s like to be the underdog.
We have the passion!”
