Did you know?

Most players know that the coin toss, a.k.a the spin of the racquet, is performed to decide who will serve first at the start of a match.

Many people don't know that the winner actually has 3 choices.

1) To serve or receive in the first game of the match, in which case your opponent(s) chooses which end of the court they want to play from for the first game of the match;

2) Choosing what side to start on. The end of the court you want to play from for the first game of the match, in which case your opponent(s) choose either to serve or receive in the first game

3) Defer. Give your opponent(s) one of the above choices, i.e., your opponent(s) can choose to serve or to receive or to choose an end to start from

* BONUS RULE: You should spin the racquet before the warm-up and be in the correct position before the start of the match. ( I rarely see players do this)

Quick Tip on choosing.
If you win the toss, choose the "bad side" first ( sun in the eyes, wind, etc.)
The first 3 games are nervous games; you'll get the "good side for 2 of the games.

This rule clarification question came from one of our followers, Julie Lai. I hope it helps!
If you have any questions or need a rule clarification, DM me; I would be happy to help.

Amazing story on Rafael Nadal:

When he was 14, the Spanish tennis federation requested that he leave Mallorca and move to Barcelona to continue his tennis training. Nadal's family turned down this request, partly because they feared it would hurt his education, but also because Toni said that "I don't want to believe that you have to go to America, or other places to be a good athlete. You can do it from your home." The decision to stay home meant that Nadal received less financial support from the federation; as a consequence, Nadal's father covered the costs.

In May 2001, he defeated former Grand Slam tournament champion Pat Cash in a clay court exhibition match. In 2002 he reached the Wimbledon junior semifinals. In 2003, at 17 he became the youngest man to reach the third round at Wimbledon since Boris Becker in 1984. In 2004, he defeated the world No. 1 Roger Federer in Miami. At 19, Nadal won the French Open on his first appearance.

“Tennis is mostly mental. Of course, you must have a lot of physical skill but you can’t play tennis well and not be a good thinker. You win or lose the match before you even go out there.”

True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost but the urge to serve others at whatever cost !

The Perspective of Serve and Volley in Modern Tennis 09/11/2022

The Perspective of Serve and Volley in Modern Tennis What is also true is that serve and volley is difficult to learn. The truly great players of this type of game in the modern era, Sampras, Rafter, and Edberg at least, and probably John McEnroe and Boris Becker, all started off as ground strokers and then learned serve and volley.

"The thing about tennis is if you stay off for two weeks, or just for three days, you can lose your rhythm quickly. So it’s just a question of constant diligence and vigilance"
