Papawhakaritorito Charitable Trust

Papawhakaritorito is the name of the whānau food farm that Jessica and Jo live on. Papawhakaritorito refers to the place where the heart of the flaxbush sings.

Papawhakaritorito Charitable Trust was set up in 2021 with a focus on kaupapa Māori; research, education and land regeneration in relation to Indigenous seed, soil and food sovereignty. The small scale Hua Parakore food farm nourishes soil, food and whānau and provides an opportunity to live Indigenous Food Sovereignty through the Hua Parakore principles. The name was given in 2007 by the late Dr

We can make a real difference to the health of te Taiao by being active kaitiaki in our own rohe or supporting mana whenua led projects that exercise their kaitiakitanga.

The new research we’ve just completed looks at how kaitiakitanga and kaitiaki-led monitoring and reporting systems can lead to better biodiversity outcomes.

Te Mātai i te Taiao was a two-year research project, in collaboration with and .

One of the kaitiaki we spoke to for a case study is Dion Pou (Ngā Puhi). Dion is a restoration ecologist, working with whānau and community groups to restore the local habitats of Te Atatū Peninsula in Tāmaki Makaurau.

His mission is to connect mātāwaka whānau (urban Māori) to both te taiao and mātauranga (Māori knowledge) in ways that are regenerative for whenua, awa, moana and tangata.

Pictured is Dion conducting a Marine Metre Squared session with Te Atatū Intermediate & Amber Aratema.

Hauhake tū, ka tō Matariki

Lifting of the crops begins when Pleiades sets.

This whakataukī reminds us that Matariki teaches us how to work with te Taiao and soon we'll be feasting on all the nourishing hua parakore goodness we've been growing in our māra over the last few months.

To share more insights into gardening and Māori food sovereignty, we're delighted that our founder Jessica Hutchings will be live on Breakfast this morning and on the Matariki special with RNZ on Saturday at 10.20am sharing what Matariki means to us. Tune in!

Our soil has a wairua, infused by the energies of Hineahuone.

We are on the threshold of genetic engineering potentially being unleashed in Aotearoa and it’s why we all must do whatever it takes to protect the biome of our soil.

As Matariki rises later this week, it is a reminder to all of us to get our hands in the soil and do what we can to protect Papatūānuku.

We have been attending and presenting at the ‘Living Breath - Indigenous Food Sovereignty conference’ for the last 2 days held on the lands and waters of the Coast Salish peoples at University of Washington. Thank you Dr Charlotte Cote and Tia Yazzie and all the Indigenous women involved in hosting such an incredible event. It was an honour to connect across our waters to rebuild our indigenous foodways.

Was great to hear reflections from the Rangatahi you brought to Aotearoa last month on how they experienced Māori food sovereignty. What stood out was their reflections of manaakitanga and aroha at the heart of Maori food systems as well as our koha or gifting economies.

We have learnt so much alongside you at this conference over the last two days, the ancient practices of weaving dating back 4000 years, your cockle baskets, fishing nets made of nettles and the need to be quite to listen to the plants like our ancestors did.

Thank you for nourishing our heart, minds, spirit and bodies we look forward to hosting you at Papawhakaritorito when you return to Aotearoa next year and to bringing rangatahi back with us to this conference in the future. Nā te aroha 🙏🏽💚🙌🏾

Emeritus Professor Jane Kelsey's speech at He Whenua Rongo 2024 02/05/2024

As always an epic korero from Emeritus Professor Jane Kelsey, if you haven’t watched this or heard her at the conference I highly recommend it. Her analysis and clear explanation around the impacts of free trade for Maori and Papatuanuku and articulate and clear. While we are not against free trade we must weight the benefits that get dangled in front of us vs. the harm they create globally - as Jane says, Free Trade is about Free for the corporations to plunder nature and knowledge for unfettered growth.

Two weeks on from He Whenua Rongo and so much gratitude for Vandana Shiva from Navdanya for joining us He Whenua Rongo, an Indigenous seed, soil and food sovereignty symposium. Thank you for sharing two korero with us over the first two days. For many of us this was the absolute highlight of the symposium to not only be in her presence but to also have the benefit of hearing her sharp critique of capitialist patriarchy. The amazing Mariana Te Rangi bringing her into the marae shortly after she lands from India and joins us off the plane after a cuppa at home with Mum Shanti Narendra Patel and whānau to reground. Thank you to all who helped to manaaki Dr Shiva while she was here and for the outpouring of love that was felt at the hui for her.

28/04/2024

Day two of , brought together over 300+ farmers, growers, scientists, activists, local food producers, researchers, writers and storytellers from across Aotearoa and around the globe to gather in one sacred place, Marae.

We had the great honour of hearing the stories and legacies of the Onedia Nation, who had travelled from upstate New York and Wisconsin in North America. Our incredible speakers openly shared their emotionally charged stories of regaining lost corn seeds, re-igniting language and the fight to keep the home fires of their traditions alive. We were humbled by the long, dedicated journey they are on to rebuild their communities, one seed at a time.

Day one of brought inspiration, strength and hope for a future for everyone, led by Indigenous people. When we focus on Papatūānuku, the health of our natural world and all people, and move away from the individualist and paternalist colonist mindset, we create energy that leads to systems change. As Emeritus Professor Jane Kelsey from stated, “staying informed is resistance”. By working together and learning from each other, we can continue the legacy of resistance and change that started with our tupuna.

Ngā mihi to for the updated illustration!
