I spent the first half of my life believing that mental illness was the sign of a weak person, and that just changing one's attitude could make it disappear. When family members complained about depression, I chalked it up that they simply need to change their mindset. But when a person's thoughts get out of hand, then it becomes that much more difficult for them to return to reality.
I learned that I was no better than a person with prejudice because someone does not conform to my way of doing things. When we cannot understand, we justify in our own mind what is right and what is wrong, without considering what somebody is going through. What a timely piece of literature! Such a creative way to address all the challenging emotions that humans can face in life. This book intertwines fantasy with real life, and leaves the reader wanting more. It's very hard to put this book down! Super impressed with the illustrations as well. This is also a great read for teens and adults who may be experiencing depression, loss, and other mental illnesses. Great book!
