When Asher Roark completed his tour of duty, he was beyond excited to return home to his life as he left it. Being a successful combat medic in the United States Army was rewarding work, but took its toll. The numerous awards he received in the line of duty were nice to look at, and made for some great stories to impress women, but they couldn’t tell the whole story. In fact, the stories he told seemed more like a shiny veneer rather than the dark and horrific experiences he survived. The stories just became a means to pick up the next woman in hopes that the next conquest would somehow drown out the darkness.
Life after the service was nothing like he expected.
Sure, he had made lifelong friends, learned more about medicine than he ever expected, and translated that into a great job as a Physician Assistant, but all that seemed superficial when compared to the emptiness inside.
Then he met June.
And everything changed.
