Sending love to my Book’d N Busy Family! With the current situations occurring in our nation, many things are forcing us to have well needed conversations about solutions to racism, inequality and the other biases. Daily education and understanding on these issues will provide the insight necessary for this system to be reformed.

In this week’s edition of our blog we have listed 5 books that you can read to inform yourself about race in America and how it shapes us as people. Each book gives a different perspective on topics such as systematic racism, racial identity and what it means to be Black in America.

📚Anyone from any background can take the step to read these wonderfully written books so that they can feel more knowledgeable about the topic of race.

✊🏾 Keep the conversation going and remember that the fight for justice for black lives is not meant to be a trend.

You can read a short description about these books by clicking the link in our bio. Also take the time to join our community as this list will be updated with more great reads and can be used as a great resource.

“I always knew that I was at least attempting to tell the whole story of Liberia, and in order to do that, I would have to go to different places. I knew I would begin with the indigenous perspective, but I would have to visit America and visit the Caribbean if I wanted the entire story to be told — of the free blacks and former slaves from America and the Caribbean, mainly Barbados, who went over during the 19th century, and actually in some parts of the early 20th century, when the Back-to-Africa movement was revived by Marcus Garvey.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In her 2018 interview with Powell’s Books, Wayétu Moore discusses She Would Be King and the need to speak of the complexity of Liberia’s history. The blend of historical detail and magical realism has created a story that really lets you imagine the bond of three major parts of our Diaspora. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Almost finished with this novel and I have to say it’s a gem. Look out for an upcoming full review.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

🔦Author’s spotlight 🔦⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As you know may know I am reading She Would Be King by Wayétu Moore. If you haven’t had the chance to read this brilliant author’s work, allow me to share more about Ms. Moore’s life story, which probably explains why her work is so powerful. Moore was born in 1985 in Liberia. She is one of five siblings. At the age of 5, Moore's family fled their home in Monrovia to escape civil war. With her father and sisters, Moore wandered for weeks in the forest, eventually finding shelter in her maternal grandmother's rural village. To protect the children from the horrors of the war, Moore's father and grandmother created a magical narrative for them in which gunshots were "dragons fighting" and dead bodies were "people sleeping on the road". Eventually, after overcoming many obstacles, the Moore family moved to Houston, Texas. There, Moore read and wrote prolifically, which she credits with helping her overcome the trauma she experienced during the war. In 2011, Watéyu launched a publishing company and nonprofit named One More Book which was founded by Moore and her siblings to provide culturally relevant books to children who are underrepresented in literature and live in countries with low literacy rates. She currently lives in Brooklyn, New York with her husband. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This line struck me and here are a couple of thoughts I have so far. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✨⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Through books we can find ourselves and in our past, we were limited. Our oppressors knew that if we learned to read or write, it’ll be trouble for them and retribution for generations to come. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✨⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Africa, United States, and The Caribbean are all part of the diaspora. has found a way to connect these three major areas together through words. Our differences and our similarities enabled characters through this novel find common ground to work together and to help establish a new nation now known as Liberia. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✨⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I can’t wait to give a full review and to share my final thoughts on such a great read. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I affirm that my Monday will be as good as I envision it being. We are a sisterhood/family of beautiful creative women who are choosing to start this week full of joy. There is much hope for what we are to accomplish this week and we refuse to let the feeling quarantine has produced affect our outlook on the beauty of this new week!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✨⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How you ask? Well we can create meaningful morning rituals. Say your affirmations, wash your face, drink your favorite tea or coffee. You too can enjoy your morning which will lead to having a spectacular day. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✨⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I am curious as to what all of your morning rituals are! Leave a comment saying which morning rituals get you most amped up to tackle the day!! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I know that when I was younger, reading the “classics” really only meant reading stories by white men. Maybe a book by here and there but it wasn’t really until college, where my eyes opened to all the wonderful stories by more women of color. I fell in love with not only the characters I read about, but with myself. I saw me in these characters and the stories just felt more real. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✨⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Shoutout to all the wonderful writers that are women of color! You are loved and appreciated. 🥰🥰⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Our first Author of the Week is the esteemed Zora Neale Hurston. Born January 7, 1891, in Notasulga, Alabama, Hurston is considered as the first in a succession of great African-American writers, including Alice Walker and Toni Morrison. Zora Neale Hurston became an important figure during the Harlem Renaissance, thanks to her novels like Their Eyes Were Watching God and shorter works like "Sweat." She was also a folklorist and anthropologist who recorded cultural history, which can be seen in her Mules and Men. Hurston died in poverty in 1960, before a revival of interest led to posthumous recognition of her accomplishments, this was thanks to works by Alice Walker and Robert Hemenway, among others. Many of her works have been published posthumously including one in 2018, Barracoon: The Story of the last “Black Cargo”. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
