The Dictators Who Want to Run the World

Anne Applebaum in conversation with David Aaronovitch.

The celebrated historian and journalist, Anne Applebaum, joins David Aaronovitch, journalist, broadcaster, and author, to discuss the networks undermining global democracy—and how we can combat them.
Anne Applebaum has been monitoring the erosion of democratic systems for decades. Currently, a new threat has emerged: autocracies are collaborating to maintain power. These regimes are not led by a single dictator but are supported by complex networks involving kleptocratic financial systems, security services, and technological experts specialising in surveillance, propaganda, and disinformation. Countries with such centralised autocracies include Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Angola, Myanmar, Cuba, Syria, Zimbabwe, and many others.

When the United States withdrew from its twenty-year “forever war” in Afghanistan, the Taliban retook control of the ravaged country and immediately found an American base loaded with weaponry—a portion of the over $7 billion in U.S. armaments still in the country. Unprecedented and audacious, director Ibrahim Nash’at spends a year inside Afghanistan following the Taliban as they take possession of the cache America left behind—and transform from a fundamentalist militia into a heavily armed military regime.

The Dictators Who Want to Run the World
Thu 5 Sep 2024 6:00 PM - 7:15 PM BST, The Conduit
One of the world’s foremost historians and journalists, Anne Applebaum, joins David Aaronovitch, journalist, broadcaster, and author, to discuss the networks undermining global democracy—and how we can combat them.

Anne Applebaum has been monitoring the erosion of democratic systems for decades. Currently, a new threat has emerged: autocracies are collaborating to maintain power. These regimes are not led by a single dictator but are supported by complex networks involving kleptocratic financial systems, security services, and technological experts specializing in surveillance, propaganda, and disinformation. Countries with such centralized autocracies include Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Angola, Myanmar, Cuba, Syria, Zimbabwe, and many others.

Anne Applebaum will explain how rogue states endure sanctions, circulate their wealth, and redefine the post-war ‘rules-based order’, and how the democratic world has unintentionally supported this new reality, risking the loss of control over our economic futures and democratic systems.

Join us in-person or online to understand the urgent, radical changes necessary to preserve democracy, and why immediate action is crucial.

In our World Briefing series, we’re closely monitoring significant global elections, some of which, like the upcoming presidential poll in Russia, are very predictable but others could have a significant impact regionally and globally.

In the UK, polls indicate a potential historic collapse of the Conservative vote, though surprises in timing and outcome are always possible.

Our focus for now shifts to the highly consequential US presidential election, India and Turkey.
