Barrington R. Atkins Dutchess County Legislator District 9
Serving as Dutchess County Legislator for District 9, City of Poughkeepsie.
Exciting Weekend Alert in District 9, City of Poughkeepsie!
Now more than ever.
SAMHSA
Sunday morning with Attorney General Letitia James at a rally in the City of Poughkeepsie—what an inspiring start to the day! Today, we rallied for democracy and reminded everyone of the importance of flipping your ballot over and voting YES on Proposition 1.
Proposition 1 is about strengthening our democracy by making sure all New Yorkers have fair representation and access to the polls. It’s about giving power back to the people and ensuring our voices are heard where it matters most. A YES vote means supporting transparency and participation in shaping the policies that affect us all!
This morning, I had the privilege of attending Anthony’s Walk—a 22-minute community event aimed at raising awareness of the very real challenges facing our veterans. This walk is named in memory of Anthony, a Marine Corps veteran who tragically lost his life here in Poughkeepsie in the fall of 2020.
The 22-minute duration of the walk is a poignant reminder of a heartbreaking statistic: every day, an estimated 22 veterans in America take their own lives. This is a crisis that requires our collective awareness and action.
I want to extend a sincere thank you to Tommy Zurhellen for organizing this event. His unwavering commitment to veterans in Dutchess County and the countless hours he spends advocating for their support does not go unnoticed. Tommy, your dedication makes a real difference in the lives of those who have given so much.
I was especially proud to see my former students from Poughkeepsie High School ROTC representing today. Their dedication, respect, and leadership were evident, and they truly embody the spirit of service. It’s moments like these that remind us how bright our future can be.
Let’s honor our veterans not only with words but with actions, ensuring they receive the support and respect they deserve. Together, we can make sure that no one who has served our country feels alone.
Next Saturday, September 28th, I’ll be joining the 3rd annual Anthony's Walk at Beck Place, Marist College, to honor our veterans and raise awareness about the challenges they face.
A huge thank you to Tommy Zurhellen for organizing this important event and continuing to shine a light on the issues impacting our local heroes. Let’s come together to support our veterans and make a difference in their lives!
Today marks a solemn day in our nation’s history. A day that forever changed us all. On September 11, 2001, we witnessed unimaginable tragedy, but also extraordinary heroism. It was a day that left an indelible imprint on the hearts of so many Americans, as we remember the lives lost, the families impacted, and the countless acts of bravery by first responders, service members, and everyday citizens.
As we honor the memory of those we lost, let us also reflect on the strength and resilience that emerged in the face of such devastation. We came together as a nation, and even in our darkest moments, we found unity and hope.
Let us never forget the sacrifices made and the enduring spirit of our country. Today, we stand together in remembrance and gratitude.
Spent My Saturday Honoring a Legacy in Poughkeepsie!
I had the privilege of joining the community at the 1st Annual Lula Mae Parker Harris Day—a powerful day of unity, advocacy, and celebration. I was reminded of how vital it is that we continue her legacy in the city of Poughkeepsie.
Mrs. Parker Harris dedicated her life to fighting for the rights of Poughkeepsie’s residents—making sure every single one of us gets our fair share, especially those who have historically been left behind. As a Dutchess County Legislator, this mission resonates deeply with me. It’s crucial that we keep pushing forward, advocating for justice, equity, and access for all members of our community.
Events like today remind us that change comes from collective action. We must ensure that Poughkeepsie remains a city where everyone, no matter their background, has the opportunity to thrive. Let’s keep working together to uphold the legacy of advocacy, compassion, and resilience that Lula Mae Parker Harris stood for.
What a beautiful day here at River Fest 2024! The community is out in full force, enjoying delicious food, thrilling rides, and all the amazing festivities along the waterfront in the heart of the City of Poughkeepsie. It’s a joy to see everyone coming together to celebrate and make memories. If you’re not here yet, come down and join the fun! Let’s keep the good vibes rolling all weekend long! Los Wood keep up the great work 💪🏾
When We Fight, We Win.
FREDERICK DOUGLASS DAY 2024
Yesterday morning, I had the incredible opportunity to visit the youth center at 209 Cottage St. in Poughkeepsie, run by the inspiring co-founder and president of Nubian Directions II Inc., Mr. Robert Wright. I was blown away by the state-of-the-art STEM equipment they have, not only for the students at this location but also available to agencies working directly with youth throughout Dutchess County.
The technology provided to our youth includes 3-D printing, drones, videography, photography, podcasting, laser engraving, virtual reality, computer simulation programs, esports, and more. Programs like these are essential for our community, offering invaluable opportunities for all students, especially those pursuing alternative educational routes.
If you haven't visited the center yet, I highly recommend it. Supporting programs like this is crucial for empowering our youth and fostering their development in the ever-evolving field of technology.
Today was a full-circle moment for me at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly renovated Pulaski Pool. As a kid, I spent countless summer days here, playing in the water and enjoying the safe haven this pool provided for so many youth in our community.
Seeing the upgrades and improvements today brought back so many fond memories and filled me with gratitude. A huge thank you to everyone who invested in and worked tirelessly to make these upgrades possible.
I encourage everyone to visit the website below to get their summer pool passes and enjoy the new and improved facilities. Oh, and don’t forget to check out the new splash pad – it’s amazing!

Free Farm Stand at Pershing Park this Tuesday from 4-6 PM! The stand will be open weekly on Tuesdays at the same time until October. All the food provided is grown right here in our community, for our community!
Eating locally grown food is incredibly important for several reasons:
1. Freshness and Nutrition: Local produce is fresher and more nutritious because it’s picked at its peak ripeness and doesn’t have to travel long distances to reach you.
2. Supporting Local Farmers: When you eat locally grown food, you support local farmers and contribute to the local economy.
3. Environmental Benefits: Local food has a smaller carbon footprint because it requires less transportation and packaging, which helps reduce pollution and conserve resources.
4. Community Connections: Eating food grown in your community fosters a sense of connection and pride. It’s a wonderful way to know where your food comes from and who grows it.
5. Seasonal Eating: Local produce is seasonal, meaning it’s grown at the time nature intended, which often means it tastes better and is better for you.

Freedom.
Enjoying the Juneteenth event in our beautiful City of Poughkeepsie!
Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, marks a significant day in American history. On this day in 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of the Civil War and the emancipation of all enslaved African Americans. This was over two years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, and it signified the true end of slavery in the United States.
Juneteenth is a time to reflect on our history, celebrate freedom, and honor the strength and resilience of the African American community. It’s a day for joy, remembrance, and looking towards a future of equality and justice.
Pride Month, celebrated every June, honors the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York City, a pivotal event in the fight for LGBTQ rights. It’s a time to recognize the contributions and struggles of LGBTQ individuals and to promote equality and acceptance.
Recent research from The Trevor Project reveals that 17% of Black LGBTQ youth have been physically threatened due to their identity, and 25% of Black transgender and nonbinary youth have faced similar threats. Alarmingly, 35% of Black LGBTQ youth have seriously considered su***de in the past year. However, access to LGBTQ-affirming spaces reduces su***de attempts by 50%.
A special thank you to the Dutchess Pride for allowing us to participate in the parade and for all the incredible work they are doing in our community.
Let’s continue to foster inclusive, affirming environments for all.

Attended the Dutchess County Health Fair today at Dutchess Community College, and it was truly enlightening! They had an array of fantastic offerings, from mental health resources to delicious food trucks, demos, free bus shuttles, car seat checks, CPR training, and other awesome giveaways.
One highlight was stopping by The Brain and Body Coalition table, where I had the pleasure of speaking with Heather Ann Pitcher. Heather updated me on the incredible work her organization is doing in supporting mental wellness in BIPOC communities. This work is so vital!
I'm thrilled to share that Heather will be offering a FREE Mental Health First Aid training on Saturday, April 27th. If you're interested, don't hesitate to email [email protected].
