ISME Student Chapter
We aim to connect, support, and inspire music students and early career professionals worldwide.
Yay Jody! Thank you for being the best mentor to all of us at the ISME Student Chapter !! We look forward to working with you!
Congratulations to Professor Jody Kerchner! She was named president-elect of the International Society for Music Education (ISME) announced at the 36th world conference in Helsinki in July.

On our second event, "Disseminating and Publishing Research", we learned about the intricacies of publishing as an early career academic, how to choose a journal for your work, how to avoid predatory publishers, and our responsibilities of ethical publishing. We also touched issues around collaborations and authorship.
Special thanks to the Publications Committee that partnered with us for this session - it was certainly enriching!
Here are some photos from Tuesday's event: Student Chapter x MISTEC - "Empowering early career music educators: navigating challenges and cultivating success through open dialogue".
Besides discussing the multi-cultural identities of students and teachers, as well as the cross-cultural contexts me live in, we addressed questions such as, how can these identities be used for connecting? Also, more basal issues like "does one need teaching experience to be a an effective music education researcher?" were discussed.
The event was chaired by MISTEC Commissioners and Dr. Le-Xuan Zhang, who one of our Student Chapter leadership member.
We would like to thank the ISME Commission on Special Music Education and Music Therapy , specially those who were present on the event and shared their experiences and knowledge.

Hello Student Chapter! Ahead of the 36th World Conference in Helsinki, the official ISME instagram account is being taken over the UniArts Helsinki team, posting about the lifestyle of the city, information about where to eat, and about the facilities themselves.
The Student Chapter and UniArts will be sharing 2 livestreams, where we'll be discussing the student experience and sharing useful information for our time in Helsinki. We have the opportunity to ask questions that would help us as students during our time there – what to see, where to eat, how to get around, and (perhaps most importantly) how to be in Helsinki on a budget!
We want to know: What questions would you like us to ask? What do you want to know about your time in Helsinki? Where should you stay? What is there to do/eat/see/drink?
These live-stream sessions will be held on the ISME instagram – https://www.instagram.com/int.soc.music.ed/?hl=en – at the following times:
Monday 11th March
1600 UTC (6pm Helsinki Time)
Thursday 14th March
0800 UTC (10am Helsinki Time)
Please put any questions you would like us to ask the UniArts team in the comments below or email them to [email protected] :) We hope to see you on the livestream!

Here is a little bit of how we started!
During the 35th ISME World Conference (July 2022), several student-focused professional development workshops were held aimed at supporting the interests of the student members of ISME, who comprise ~30% of all members. The ISME Membership Committee understands the importance of this next generation of researchers and practitioners, and seeks to support this student body by drawing upon the knowledge and experience of other passionate students and academic members to foster their curiosities, passions, and aspirations to contribute to the study and practice of music education.
Therefore, our mission is to:
1. Connect students of ISME and foster lifelong partnerships and cooperation across cultures and disciplines.
2. Support the growth of the ISME student body through education, guidance, and mentorship from peers and professionals alike.
3. Inspire the next generation(s) of music and music education researchers in order to fulfill ISME’s broader mission for the future of music academia.
So far, we have offered online workshops and seminars, but we are willing to do so much more! That is why we are counting on you to help us build the Student Chapter to serve and support our fellow students and early career professionals.
Stay tuned to our page for our next activities!
