Quaternary Layered Ni-Rich NCMA Cathode for Lithium-Ion Batteries 16/10/2021

Most global electric car manufacturers use NMC cathodes with different percentages of Nickel - NMC 532, NMC 622, NMC 721. Tesla uses NCA with high Nickel %, probably 811. This article discusses a new cathode (NMCA), invented by the researchers from premier Scientific Institutions in Germany and South Korea, that promises higher stability and longer cycle life. Ref - https://lnkd.in/d_C73d6v

Author C S RAMANATHAN feels that NMCA cathodes will become the material of choice for LIBs in cars. The comparison between NCA, NMC and NMCA cathodes is made on different parameters, including cycle life, resistance to microcracking, heat stability and ability to fast charge. It is understood that LG Chem (presently using NMC 721 for EV batteries and supplying to Renault, Hyundai, Chevrolet and Jaguar) will start making NMCA in 2022.

The Massachusetts-based technology company ePROPELLED announced the release of a new electric vehicle propulsion system that claims to use battery power much more efficiently, allowing OEMs to reduce the size of the battery pack by at least 15%.

The system eDTS (ePropelled’s Dynamic Torque Switching) comprises three main components - eDTS motor i.e. a brushless permanent magnet synchronous machine; the power electronics drive that includes a high voltage inverter and a control system that automatically selects the most efficient operation mode based on vehicle demand; and an Electronic switch matrix that links the many windings of the motor to the phases of the drive.

ePropelled worked with Tata Motors with support from Embed, Ltd. to install the eDTS system in a Tata Tiago, which will also be on display at the Cenex-LCV 2021 show in Millbrook on 23rd September 2021 where the technology will be revealed.

Slow charging, fast charging and battery swapping - potential areas of improvement for the industry • EVreporter 22/09/2021

The main points raised by Rahul Bollini in this opinion piece for EVreporter.com around Slow Charging, Fast Charging and Battery Swapping are:

1. 'Slow charging' can be faster if EV manufacturers provide a higher ampere rated charger along with the EV. 2W OEMs typically provide a 6A charger which costs around INR 2,300. A 15A charger costs around INR 4,000. The same goes for electric 3Ws where OEMs typically provide a 15 A charger that costs about INR 4,000. They could provide 30A which would cost around INR 7,000. By raising the absolute price of the vehicle by a small amount, the overall experience of EV ownership can be drastically improved in terms of time taken to charge the vehicle at home or office.

2. Charging up to 50% of the battery in 30 minutes is considered safe. Charging any faster than this rate would need additional provisions of thermal management in battery packs. Good quality Lithium-ion cells (grade A cells) allow for fast charging rates without much degradation and can last for a decent time in Indian operating temperatures. However, Grade B cells are popular because they are cheaper, but they have lower performance noticeable in the long run, and they compromise on the safety aspect.

3. Swapping operations require standardization in the battery voltage and dimensions. Battery Swapping Stations owned by third parties can be challenging since various EV manufacturers have different dimensions of the battery packs. An ideal case scenario for BSS owned by third party companies would be that the EV owners buy EVs without batteries and completely depend on the BSS companies for their battery needs. This way the total ownership and control of the batteries shifts to the BSS company. But, buying an EV without a battery would make an EV owner ineligible for the FAME 2 subsidy and the subsequent subsidies offered by some of the states.

One way to be able to claim subsidy and the need for standardization of battery dimensions for the BSS model is to have a provision for dual batteries. The EV must have a fixed primary battery, which is provided by the manufacturer and a secondary battery, which can be picked up from a BSS as and when necessary. The secondary battery will be owned by the BSS company. But for this model to work out, the EV manufacturers must provide a standardized additional space to accommodate the additional battery. The dual battery model will also provide the potential to double the range of the EV, hence completely ending the range anxiety among EV buyers.
