My dear friend has made a beautiful playlist.

I can't believe it's 'the closing down of the summer'!!! (wait..is it too soon to make jokes about my own song titles???)
Here's a little relief for your sonic temples.
It also includes the latest single from my very dear friend of over twenty years, Andrew Sisk, who released an album on August 11th. Stay tuned for a video I made for him as an early Christmas present (I didn't just say Christmas I didn't say it)
for his song 'Adrift')
This playlist also features new singles from a few other good pals, like Rachel Sermanni and Mick Flannery and MOREEEE! I'm just trying to keep up with all these talented friends and still find time to watch maybe one episode of television at night while I'm still at home, if possible.
That's all for now. Enjoy this month's playlist.
And if you're wondering, that's a photo I just found of my mother, lying on a 70's s**g carpet.
Love you all,
Xx
Jenn

We said goodbye to Richard Laviolette today. Richard was in touch with a deep magic, a deep, brave, river of song. He was a beautiful, kind, funny person. I don’t separate those things. He was my friend.

Richard was the first artist we worked with at YC, outside of our immediate founding circle. I had played shows a few times with Richard and loved his “A Little Less Like A Rock…” CD. It was beautiful and mysterious and intimate, in its hand sewn sleeve, its depiction of ants and universes and neighbourhoods and alphabets. When he gave me a CDR of All Of Your Raw Materials at a house show in Guelph, I loved it instantly. This is a defining album for me, a lesson in love and courage and community. It is an album for life.

Everything I can think to say today about love and loss and the way to celebrate life through music, Richard has said in one of his songs. They burst with life and mortality, with guts and glory, with love, justice, honesty, and a beautiful mischief. These songs were expressions of the particularities of Richard’s life and his voice, and they were songs that found embodiment in that particular body, and in his voice, but they always, magically, transcended these specifics. It’s been beautiful to hear his songs picked up by other voices. At the tribute show in Guelph last week Cormac thanked Richard for sharing his living with us and for sharing his dying with us. This is a profound gift.

Thank you for sharing your songs with us Richard, thank you for your voice. Thank you for your joy and your grace. Thank you for your friendship.

We had the great honour of releasing two of Richard’s albums on YC, All Of Your Raw Materials in 2010 and Taking The Long Way Home in 2017. There is another, final record forthcoming, a last record Richard worked to complete in these past months: All Wild Things Are Shy. Much of Richards other work has recently been uploaded to his Bandcamp Page. Hollow Hooves, Soundtrack To The Life of A Car, A Little Less Like A Rock A Little More Like A Home, and more. There’s a link below.

Our love to all who loved him. Sing loud. Sing together. That’s how we do it, i think, that’s how we can do it.

We love you Ricky.

- Steve

💐We're extremely please that we will get to see By Divine Right + Andrew Sisk at The CAP!! See your there?!

🎫 Tickets are moving quick!
Find them at https://bit.ly/CapTickets

From the Fortune Stellar website:
https://fortunestellarrecords.com/artists/by-divine-right/
By Divine Right (BDR) features the psych-infused art-pop songwriting of singer / guitarist Jose Contreras. In the early days BDR’s ever evolving line-up, counting amongst some of its members Feist, Brendan Canning (Broken Social Scene) and Brian Bordchert (Holy F**k), made it one of Canada’s first indie rock collectives.

Yet since 2010, the By Divine Right lineup has been a fan favourite trio consisting of Contreras, Alysha Haugen (bass / vocals) and Geordie Dynes (drums / vocals). This band, heard on 2013 album “Organized Accidents” (Hand Drawn Dracula) and 2016’s track for track interpretation of Depeche Mode’s “Speak & Spell (Headless Owl Records) as well as the upcoming 2022 double LP “OTTO MOTTO” (Fortune Stellar Records) is the longest running lineup in BDR’s evolution. By Divine Right has been recognized with Polaris Prize and Juno nominations, but most notably the adoration of admiring music fans and the CanRock music elite alike.

History by Andrew Sisk 18/03/2022

Treelines Story #2:

I had heard a story about one of the group of seven painters who had spent his later years doing odd jobs and moving around from place to place sometimes gifting those who houses him with one of his paintings.
I had already been fiddling around with a picking pattern on the guitar and the two just happened to work together to make this song. Lyrically, it was just an anecdote for the historical pattern of artists whose work is only valued after they’re gone.

Mike Belyea once again added drums that brought the song to life and then Mike Feuerstack added lap steel to create the atmosphere for the story.

I remember deciding early on that I wanted to use a sound palate on this album of steel guitar, electric Wurlitzer piano, and nylon stringed guitar for the arrangements. This song became the sonic template for how I would arrange the rest of the album.

Treelines Story #1:
I had moved to Montreal from Halifax and most of the friends I had here were other musicians I had met in the previous years of touring and recording with my band Share. (https://music.apple.com/ca/artist/share/1528414258)
I had a microphone, MacBook and some experience with recording demos at home. I had learned the basics of recording from AA Wallace and Daniel Ledwell while recording Share records with them so I started toying around with songs.

I was trying to find a way of writing songs that I would feel good about playing solo but also fulfilled my desire to tell stories. I found inspiration in Springsteen and Cohen and thought about making little short stories in each song.

The first song I remember writing was “Full time” in Halifax about the experience of being in a relationship with someone who works a different shift than you. I stumbled upon the words “waiting for time, waiting full time” while recording the demo. I kept it. It was a happy accident that said everything I wanted to say. When I finally recorded the drums with Mike Belyea in Montreal, he had the idea of having a big swing to the beat to build the anticipation to match the mood of the song. I loved his performance and ended up dropping the drums in the verses to highlight the drum crescendo at the end. This was the song that started the process of making the rest of the album. https://music.apple.com/ca/album/fulltime/1610598903?i=1610599051

St. Dominique, by Coco et Co. 08/01/2022

Years ago when I finally got my own gear to record at home I started making these pop songs with the idea of limiting myself to only a drum machine, synth, electric guitar and two voices to see what would happen. Maybe you’ve never heard them before? They’re some sad indie pop for your isolation winter:
