Happy Earth Day! Here's a watercolor/pencil piece I made last weekend.
Reading to your children every day is hands down the best way to help your child learn to read. They gain a broader language and vocabulary from books than from the spoken word, phonemic awareness, comprehension, and more. But did you know reading to your child also gives them a window into other people's lives and helps to build empathy? It can also be a mirror to reflect their own lives and help them understand themselves.
We've been reading House at Pooh Corner at bedtime. What are you reading this week to your kids?
Sneak preview! Book 1 is half way illustrated ๐๐จ๐๏ธ๐
The scene is set, the next page will bring the drama - what will it be??
๐๏ธDrop a comment below to tell me your best guess for the story!!
Even before your child can read, they learn language AND love in your lap as you read to them.

What pulls you into a children's book's illustrations? Do you like cartoon-y or life like? What is pleasing to your eye?
Just released a podcast about what makes a great picture book with an interview from Sarah and I can't wait to incorporate those ideas into my new decodable phonics readers AND my living books series on seasons!
Check out my reels today for a quick sketch! Here are some more heads - I'm getting much more comfortable and confident with this process. Working on different types of shapes and making them more stylized for illustrations and less detailed like a portrait.
My son wants to read everything but just can't. His curriculum is an Orton-Gillingham phonics program which he is thriving with. But the program comes with one reader and only one story every couple of lessons for him to read. He's begging to read more! But most easy reader kids books out there rely heavily on sight words, which he doesn't yet have.
This has produced a sadness in my son I don't care for. So I am remedying the situation by creating a set of fun phonics readers that follow the same outline as his curriculum so he can read as many stories as his heart desires!
My hope is that these stories will help other little girls and boys unlock the freedom of reading and the magical worlds created in books โค๏ธ๐
What can you do today to help someone have better access to books? Spend a few minutes reading to them? Drop off a book in a Free Little Library?
I wrote this story for you, but when I began it I had not realized that girls grow quicker than books. As a result you are already too old for fairy tales, and by the time it is printed and bound you will be older still. But some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again. You can then take it down from some upper shelf, dust it, and tell me what you think of it. I shall probably be too deaf to hear, and too old to understand a word you say, but I shall still be your affectionate Godfather, C. S. Lewis.
