In memoriam: Dr Fernand Dagenais (1926-2020)
Doctor Fernand Dagenais passed away on February 1st, 2020, aged 93 after having had a happy life. He was born in Montreal in 1926 in a middle class family. He went to college and completed his âcours classiqueâ.
He was then admitted to medical school at UniversitĂ© de MontrĂ©al and completed his curriculum in general practice in 1954. He then established himself on the south shore of Montreal where he practiced as a family physician together with an affiliation at Sainte-Jeanne-dâArc hospital in Montreal. Throughout those years, his wife, after 8 pregnancies , learned she was suffering from severe CVI.
This brought him to be interested in phlebology, and in 1969, he began a new career in that field, therefore joining Dr. Gilles Cloutier, founder of the CSP, and other pioneers in our field. Those were difficult times as imaging was merely unavailable. So, he opened his practice on boul. Saint-Joseph in Montreal, next door to Dr. Cloutierâs office. Since there were very few physicians in that field, his practice kept very busy, injecting GSV blindly(!)but relieving many patients from symptoms of CVI. He contributed to the 1972 UIP convention Held in Montreal under Dr. Michel Zummoâs presidency by receiving colleges, mostly from the US, as observers. My father introduced me to the practice of phlebology and I am very thankful to him for having had the opportunity to learn and work in that great field of Medicine since 1990.
Finally, after a great career, he retired in 1991, after which he spent most of his time travelling and enjoying his country house in Sutton Eastern townships, Quebec.
He will be remembered forever.
