Sibley STEM Program

The Fall 2017 STEM program will be "Design Squad" not "Flight School." We will have to postpone "Flight School" until this coming spring. Please pass the word and encourage young minds at S-O to check our new camp, "Design Squad" with lots of engineering challenges and competitions!

"Build it Better STEM" is Jan. 21st from 9am-2pm at S-O Elementary School! Please sign up through the Rec Dept! Note: the change in location! It will be at the ELEMENTARY SCHOOL!

"Build it better STEM" will be Jan. 21st, 2017 from 9am - 2pm at the S-O HS! Sign up through the Rec office as soon as possible as we need a proper count in order to purchase new supplies. We're going to deploy Fly-Brix--Legos that can be used to build a flying drone!

Sports STEM is Saturday, Oct. 15 from 9 am to 2 pm! We added hydrogen football (use hydrogen gas to blow a miniature football through a goal post)! Please contact me ASAP if you'd like to sign up!

Fall Jr STEM was a success! We had 24 participants + 6 parents attend! Special thanks to our STEM teachers: Brenda Tutje, Heidi Douma and Kate Wedge!! We're working hard to reach the young scientists and engineers in our communities---please continue to spread the word!

* Jr STEM (Grades K-2) will be Saturday, Sept. 24 from 9 am to 11:30 am at the Elementary.
* Sports STEM Camp (Grades 3-5) will be Saturday, Oct. 15 from 9 am to 2 pm at the HS.

Don't forget! JrSTEM is tomorrow (Friday, June 10th) from 9am to 11:30am! Open to students who have completed grades K-2. Cost is $5--no need to pre-register. Spread the word!

STEM-lympics is coming to Sibley! If you haven't signed up for Grades 3-5 STEM-lympics, that's okay! Just come! It's tomorrow (June 3) from 9am to 2:00pm. Lots of exciting STEM competitions including STEM dodgeball (you have to knock over an opponent's block castle and their defenders).

Jr STEM-lympics (Grades K-2) is Friday, June 10th from 9am to 11:30pm. Please register with Mr. Wedge at [email protected]. Please pass the word!

Changes to summer 2016 STEM programming:
* There will be NO STEM playzone dates, instead we will be having a Jr STEM camp (STEM-lympics) for students in grades K-2 from 9am to 11:30am on Friday, June 10th.
* We will still have the Lego Builders Club events.

Description: Calling all Builders! At Lego Builder’s Club, participants will get to build various Lego sets (including Cinderella’s Castle, Ariel’s Underwater Palace, Pirate ships, Castles) and others; or you can build anything you wish! Once built, participants are free to play with their sets or build new ones!

I included Thomas Friedman's quote about the need to start young in order to get kids hooked on science, math and engineering---I'd say the future for our S-O scientists and engineers is bright!

S-O's "Imagination Playground" has arrived! Thanks to combined funding from the Osceola Community Foundation, Friends of Franklin, Bright Beginnings and S-O STEM, we'll have a 100+ piece available for Daycare and elementary students to build their own playground! It will be available for the first time at STEM Expo on Friday! Be sure to come check it out!

Mark your calendars!! The 3rd annual S-O Elementary Science Night/STEM Expo is Friday, April 8th from 5:30-7:30! A big shout out to all of our STEM parents----please let me know if you can furnish treats to sell. All funds generated go directly into our STEM program to fund future camps and to get STEM equipment (like EZYrollers for Mrs. Elser's PE class) to our teachers. Thanks again for everyone's support! The future is bright for young scientists and engineers!

Wow!! Using some of our "Minds of Tomorrow" and "STEM Inspired Teaching" grants, we purchased 8 Osmos for our K-2 teachers. Check out photos of Mrs. Tutje's entire class using them!

Get ready to explore the world of chemistry with colors!
