விலங்குகளைக் கொன்று, தின்று மிஞ்சிப்போகும் தோலை எதிலேனும் கட்டிவைத்து, காய வைத்து மனம் போன போக்கில் அடித்து ஆடிய ஆட்டந்தான் காலப்போக்கில் கலைவடிவமாகவும், வாழ்வியல் உணர்ச்சிகளை உணர்த்தும் சத்தமாகவும் மாறி, திருமணம், இறப்பு, சிறு தெய்வ திருவிழா நிகழ்வுகள் என மக்களின் அன்றாட வாழ்க்கையின் அத்தனை சுக துக்கங்களிலும இடம் பெறும் கலையாகியது. ஆரிய வருகைக்குப் பின் வருணாசிரம சமூக அடிப்படை மேலோங்கிய தருணங்களில், கடினமான, இசைக்கச் சிரமமான இசைக்கருவிகளை பிறருக்கும், இலகுவான இசைக்கருவிகளை தங்களுக்குமாக மேலாதிக்கவாதிகள் பிரித்துக் கொண்டனர். மேலும் தொழில் சார்ந்த சாதியக் கோட்பாடு, கலை நிகழ்த்துவோரையும் சாதி சார்ந்து பிரித்து வைத்தது. அதன்படியே ஆதி திராவிட தமிழர்களின் கலையாக பறை ஆட்டம் ஒதுக்கப்பட்டது. தாழ்த்தப்பட்டவர்கள் எனச் சொல்லி பலநூறு ஆண்டுகள் அடக்குமுறைக்கு உள்ளாக்கப்பட்ட சமூகங்கள், உரிய கல்வி கிடைக்காமல், நாகரீக நீரோட்டத்தில் இணைய முடியாமல் தவித்த தருணங்களில், அவர்களின் வாழ்க்கை முறையையே காரணமாகக் கூறிய நவீன சமூகம், அவர்களின் வாழ்வோடு கலந்திருந்த பறையாட்டத்தை, சாவுமேளம் ,தப்பாட்டம் என முத்திரை குத்தியது.

ஒரு கட்டத்தில் பறையடித்தல் என்பது சாதியக் குறியீடாகவும், அடிமைத்தனத்தின் அடையாளமாகவும் மாறிவிட, அச்சமூகத்தின் விடுதலை வேட்கை கொண்ட இளைஞர்கள் பறையடித்தலை அவமானமாக கருதத் தொடங்கினர். இவ்விதம் மெல்ல, மெல்ல அக்கலை அழியும் நிலைக்கு வந்தது. சிறுதெய்வ வழிபாட்டு ஆலயங்களில் பால்குடம், பூக்குளித்தல், தீச்சட்டி எடுத்தல் போன்ற நிகழ்ச்சிகளில் இக்கலை நிகழ்வதுண்டு. இடைக்காலத்தில் பெருவாரியான ஆதி திராவிட மக்கள் கிறிஸ்தவ மதத்துக்கு மாறியதன் விளைவாக செபஸ்தியர், அந்தோணியர், ஆரோக்கியமாதா, வியாகுலமாதா, சந்தியாகப்பர் போன்ற கிறிஸ்தவ கோவில்களிலும் இக்கலை நிகழ்த்தப்படுவதுண்டு.
