If you’re a parent of a child with a disability, check out orangesocks.org! They are an online organization that shares relevant local and national resources and helps parents to connect with one another. Their most recent blog post features an interview with one of Roots occupational therapists, Lacey, about what to expect when you bring a child in for an OT evaluation.

Dressing Milestones-
Did you know that occupational therapists can help with dressing skills? Here are some typical milestones for when children learn dressing skills. Keep in mind that all kids learn differently and at their own pace. One helpful parent tip is to start with teaching your child the very last step, and work backwards from there! This allows the child to have the satisfaction of completing the task each time.

The Brittany Atkinson family was given the "Volunteer of the Year" award for all of the Catholic Community Services organizations. They started volunteering at the St. Vincent's Soup Kitchen downtown a few years ago. When the pandemic started, St. Vincent's was unable to open their dining hall due to the health department regulations in SLC. During the months that the dining hall was closed, the Atkinson family organized 800 sack meals every week. They had a lot of assistance from neighbors who helped make sandwiches, bake treats, or donate drinks/chips/fruit. It was definitely a neighborhood project!

Congratulations and thanks for being a great example of service to the community, Brittany!

It’s Friday 🥳 Which means we get to share another amazing Roots Kid. Our this week is Sean. He comes to OT every week with an amazing smile, the funniest jokes, and ready to work hard. This week our staff got an email from his mom, who shared this picture along with the caption “He wanted me to let you know he just tied his shoe!” Sean has been working hard on this goal for months and we couldn’t be more proud! Way to go Sean!

Using movement to facilitate learning!

Our special educator, Joy, does a fabulous job helping learners gain the skills needed to become successful readers.

Not only does Joy use evidence-based curriculum such as the Barton and Heggerty programs, but she assesses a student to determine their strengths and challenges as a learner.

Teaching is much more than tutoring...it is more than sitting at a desk and practicing a skill.  Teaching includes learning about your learner- It is about how the child learns best, and determining the underlying challenges that inhibit learning.  It is about unlocking a child's potential and helping them thrive.

Movement and motivation can do wonders for a learner!  Even while practicing reading skills in a pool.

Great work to Joy and your student!

Does your child not like to try new foods? Feeding/eating is another area of expertise for our occupational therapists at Roots. One thing OT’s initially consider is if a child is a “picky eater” or a “problem eater.” A picky eater may need some extra support at home for adding new foods to their diet, while a problem eater often benefits from feeding therapy with a trained OT. Swipe through to learn more!
