Match Report๐ฃ๐ฃ๐ฃ
The last winter match of West Auckland CFC, fished with Auckland Coarse Fishing Club - Inc concluded last Sunday 15 September on the banks of the Big M.
The heavy rain of the previous day increased the flow on the river and lots of debris came floating downstream in the morning. Towards the end of the match the flow started to subside somewhat with better conditions.
With the wet paddocks, angler's couldn't drive in, so the tree-section and The Straight was pegged and fished - 19 pegs in total.
Tactics used varied between the feeder short and long - both in the margins, short pole on about 4m and short pole in the margin. For obvious reasons, most of the middle of the river was ignored.
Species in play on the day were mostly rudd, some catfish, a few eels and a bit of carp. A few big rudd were also hungry enough to have mistaken the hookbait for freebies.

Match Report ๐ฃ๐ฃ๐ฃ
The 3rd match of the Winter Series concluded last Sunday on the banks of a heavily flowing Big M, and again it was poor conditions to fish if you didn't like catching eel ๐...
Of the initial interested group of anglers, just short of half eventually showed to endure the grime fishing and weather conditions๐จ. The forecast looked depressing with rain and strong wind on the cards for the day. Admittedly, it didn't rain that much during the day, but more downpour started right at the end of the match.
The waterlevel didn't change much during the day, maybe an inch up and down, so that was pretty decent.
Again it was a margin fishing match consisting of mostly eels and some catfish ๐ although the lads on either ends had good quantities of rudd ๐ as part of their catch. Way to go Paul Senior, Jamie Cox and Matt Williams!
The stretch between the pipe-peg and aquarium was allocated to be fished, the best bit of water under the circumstances.
No bonus fish ๐ณ were caught, but Dave Russell did loose a big carp just before the 'All Out' in an obstacle๐ณ๐ฟ on the near bank - not that that would have any difference on the outcome really...๐ค

It was the river expert, Dave Russell๐ฅ, who won it again! Dave put up an awesome display of how really to fish the river when it's pushing hard, and he amassed 20lbs from peg 3 for a 1st in section and overall win ๐ฅ
In 2nd overall ๐ฅ position and 1st in the other section was Matthew Williams from the aquarium peg with 17-08.
The 3rd ๐ฅ heaviest bag on the scale, was that of Paul Senior, 14-02 in total weight. The rest of us are still looking for parking... ๐ป๐
One thing is certain: no two days on the river is the same...
Well done to the framers - well deserved lads ๐

Match Report ๐ฃ๐ฃ๐ฃ
It was a dry Fur๐ป and Feather๐ชถ for a change, but still cold ๐ฅถ. The scene was set on the banks of the big M to see who can haul the heaviest bag ๐ฃ over 2 days from the chocolate ๐ซ brown water. Plans to drive in to the downstream paddock fell through, as it was just too wet after the rains ๐ง of earlier in the week. So, it was back to the trees ๐ณ๐ณ๐ณ and Straight๐
As always, it's great to have our mates from down South also competing, with the likes of Barry Sullivan, Nathan Morley, John Bean and Dennis Paton. Some of the other lads wanted, but couldn't make trip up North to feel some carp ๐on the other end of the line.
Pe***ng started to the left of the bridge as usual up to the Aquarium, downstream. The flow subsided somewhat from day 1 to day 2, but it's flow you want on a river for optimum results.
From the off it was clear that it wasn't going to be easy fishing, as bites didn't come straight away like times when the fish are having it. So it was more of a thinking game ๐ฎ
Them big rudd that were expected, never really showed, but some decent carp were hungry enough to mistake a hookbait for a free offering ๐
On day 1 it was Matt Williams who had top weight of 12-07 in the trees, followed by Gary Bourne with 11-04. Downstream on the straight it was Johan Marx who managed 22lbs from peg 14 and Dave Russell who bagged 16lbs from peg 12. Other good weights on the day were lads like Joe Bagley with 11lbs, Pete Williams with 9 lbs
Come day 2 it was all to play for, because the fishing was hard and any of the top anglers could easily have a bad day at the office.
Nathan moved a couple pegs downstream from where he managed the heaviest weight for the day. Dave Russell got Johan's peg of day 1 from the draw bag, so a good draw there looking at the previous day's results. Johan drew peg 1, which he didn't fancy at all, as the Trees-section is lately fishing rock hard if compared to The Straight. Gary Bourne stayed in the trees, but got the section wining peg 6 from the day before, where Matt Williams had his 12lbs from.
With the 'All Out' ๐ข called at 16.00, a tough Fur ๐ป & Feather ๐ชถ 2024 came to an end and it was all down to the scales...
Results looked like this:
1st ๐๐ฅJohan Marx bagging a total of 47lbs
2nd ๐ฅ Dave Russell who landed 36lbs
3rd ๐ฅ Nathan Morley, weighing 28lbs after a great day 2 effort.
A huge thanks goes to Pete Williams who, as usual, hosted a great match. Roll on 2025!

Match Report.
Steve Brown claims Man of the Match for the latest West Auckland & Auckland joint club match at the Big M.
Horrific fishing conditions met the anglers at the venue after lots of rain fell in the catchment area of the river. The water was up and pumping through at great pace.
These conditions means one thing only, and that is to fish a heavy feeder in the margin and catch all that swims... Heaps of debris being washed downstream, makes fishing any type float almost impossible as it catches around the weights on the line, dragging the float down. Some of us learn the hard way...
Lots of blanks were unavoidable and most anglers who had some fish, weighed single digits.
Still better than being on the couch at home though...

Well done boys!
Next up: the annual Fur & Feather on 3 & 4 Aug - let's go!
And so the European Coarse Fishing Championships 2024 hosted on the Princess Margaret Canal in The Netherlands ๐ณ๐ฑ, comes to an end...
Day 2 saw some epic battles for the podium and the French ๐ซ๐ท kept their champion๐ฅ๐ dream alive by clinching the win with 63 penalty points.
The silver medal ๐ฅwent to Slovakia ๐ธ๐ฐ with 76 penalties coming from an overnight 7th position. On day 2 they dominated the field with only 28 points for the day!
Team England ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ turned on the heat on day day 2 and climbed from a 9th on day 1 to claim the bronze๐ฅand a podium finishโผ๏ธThe lads are over the moon ๐ โผ๏ธTheir efforts, a good draw and fierce battle had them 2nd overall on day 2. Well done, that is an amazing effort ๐
On the individual podium, the new Euro Champion ๐๐ฅis Ramon Ansing ๐ณ๐ฑ with a 3 point penalty score.
In silver position ๐ฅ with 5 points is Rytis Bitinas ๐ฑ๐น and the Frenchman ๐ซ๐ท Jรฉrรฉmy Perrin got the bronze ๐ฅwith his 6 penalties.
Although the venue was still patchy on day 2, and ship/boat traffic didn't subside, the teams with the right tactics prevailed and got on top. Good nets of slabs and skimmers were caught, testing the participants tackle and nerves to the end. All out a great display of sportsmanship and wellness of the greater coarse fishing fraternity.
Also a word of congratulations to Sportvisserij Nederland for hosting an epic, well planned and executed Euro Champs!
Roll on 2025!

First leg ๐ฆตof the European Coarse Fishing Championships ๐ is completed on the Princess Margaret Canal ๐ in The Netherlands ๐ณ๐ฑ.
It's apparent that there are some difficult โ๏ธ areas on the venue where there seems to be less fish ๐, and if an angler is drawn in one of those, a terrible result is imminent. That being said, the heaviest bag came in at a whopping 28 kgs from the Lithuanian ๐ฑ๐น, Rytis Bitinasโผ๏ธ Team England ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ have had the most bites for the day displayed in their fish count of 154.
Team France ๐ซ๐ท leads the pack with a great display of only 23 penalties and yhey surely have tactics worked out for now. . They are well in front of the Czechs ๐จ๐ฟ with 36 points in 2nd and Belgium ๐ง๐ช with 39 points on bronze at the moment.
As it stands now, any team on page 1 of the results, have a shot ๐ฏ at the podium come the 'all out' on day 2, so it will be a fierce fight in the second half. It seems most teams have had 3 better individual results and 2 bad results. Medal-aspiring teams need a friendly draw bag tomorrow morning and that
might just be the difference between a medal ๐
and disappointment ๐
Can't wait to see what day 2 brings ๐

It's European Coarse Fishing Championships time in The Netherlands ๐ณ๐ฑ and day 1 of 2 has just started! This year sees the 28th Euro Champs fished on the Prinses Magriet Kanaal (Princess Margaret Canal) close to Spannenburg.
This is a commercial canal and quite deep with numerous ship and boat traffic on a daily basis transporting goods from and to their destinations. This adds a whole new level of technicalities to fishing the canal, as the water moves to and throw when a big ship ๐ข passes by.
The target species is mostly skimmer and bream with the odd roach mixed into the catch. The skilled anglers should mostly make use of short and long pole tactics as boat traffic will make fishing a slider float virtually impossible. To concur the moving water, anglers need to be ready with pole top kits equipped with flat floats.
How will the home nation of The Netherlands ๐ณ๐ฑ fare on home soil competing against some of the strongest teams in the world? Top teams like England ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ, Hungary ๐ญ๐บ, Belgium ๐ง๐ช, France ๐ซ๐ท, Czech Republic ๐จ๐ฟ and Germany ๐ฉ๐ช, to name a few, will want top spot on the podium come the prize giving on Sunday afternoon.
What tactics will Europe's best employ to outsmart the opposition? Will they fish for anything that swims or will some settle for a bigger static bait to catch those big slabs?
Only time will tell...
Here are a few practice week pics ๐ธ. We'll bring you the halfway results and more action shots by Sunday morning (NZ time).

Match Report ๐ข๐ข๐ข
The first winter match kicked off yesterday with 2 of the Auckland clubs fishing together at the big M.
It was a little too wet after the recent rain, so the lads decided it would be fishing the Bridge and Straight for a change of scenery. The waterlevel was up in relation to last month and the river had some good flow. Between the trees you needed a 5 to 6 gram flat float to hold the bait still but the pegs on the Straight needed less. This difference is due to more than one factor, of which water depth and river width are some of the major reasons.
During the 5 hours of the match the waterlevel rose by 8cm. This could be determined by making use of a marked bankstick pushed into the bankside - an important part of a serious match angler's armor.
With the colder weather creeping in, the bigger rudd started to show here and there. Some plump specimens of around 12 ounces were caught on corn - always a good sign of things to come for the rest of the winter matches.
In A-section, on peg 3, Johan's second fish was a fat orange - a very welcome fish early in the match to help him to a total of 20lb. Steve Brown was also into some fish early on, fishing the deeper water of peg 1 . Newbies to the West Auckland Club and coarse fishing as a whole, were Gert and his son Stephan on 5. They managed some rudd and small carp to both hang just over 4lb each on the scale - not too bad for a first time boys! In an effort to get something going late, Pete took hold of his feeder rod again and what do you know, he snared a big carp in the last 20 minutes.
In B-section both Nigel Meek and Tim had decent matches with weights north of 14lb, Tim's net consisted mostly of silvers. Nigel Beadle on the end peg had a respectful 17lb for the match, but it was Dave who went all out with a propper match winning haul of 30lb, including some good carp and silvers.

Although we're heading into winter with great speed, it was West Auckland's last summer match for the season on Sunday 19 May.
The venue was the big M and we were able to drive in, right up to the pegs.
West Auckland fished the right hand side of the match lenght and Auckland fished the left.
Both the morning and mid day temperatures were really mild, and that aided in an enjoyable day on the bank. A light breeze of 2 to 3 m/s rustled through the trees every now and again creating almost perfect conditions.
It was a pretty slow start with very few fish interested in any bait. Although the water level was low, as expected, there was still some flow on the river, which is always a good sign.
It was clear that total weights today were going to be low. Usually with circumstances like these, it happens that some bigger fish tend to get a chance to find the bait and today was no different. Dave Russell and Paul Sutherland both had some lumps to show our camera. Awesome lads!
Across the match lenght it was hard to identify one tactic that worked wonders, as some anglers caught mostly on a feeder to the far bank while others had better results on the long pole. Whip tactics were also far less successful on the day compared to other matches on the river. But the one golden match fishing rule of feeding 'little and often' definitely reaped results once again.
Results:

2nd Paul Sutherland with 16lb 03oz
3rd Pete Williams with 13lbs 02oz

Have you noticed that Drennan Team England ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ aced it on day 2 of the Feeder Worlds in Spain??
On the day they were 8 points ahead of the nearest competitor... and if it wasn't for that 13 pointer, the gap would've been even greater!
They boast with a 1, 1, 2, 4 and then the 13th, in the respective sections! That's a world class performance right there.
They definitely had it spot on on day 2, but they were just too far behind to catch up to get on the podium...
They've had the 2nd highest fish count on day 1 that means their fish was noticeably smaller than the top teams'. So they have had more than enough fish, the stamp was just too small ๐
So the question is whether their tactics for day 1 was based on a smaller fish approach as they thought it would be right/necessary on the day or did they by accident draw more smaller fish due to a specific bait or way of feeding?
It is clear as daylight, that the team knew what to do come day 2... hats off to them for that ๐๐๐ If they followed suit on day one, they could have won this championship with a margin of around 16 points!! I'm sure they are so disappointed in themselves knowing it could have been so different ๐ฅ
What do you think happened?
