Decided to take some time this summer and dust off my jazz chops a bit! It’s been years since I worked on anything truly jazz-related, so don’t judge too hard. I’m pretty proud of the work I’ve done on this in the last day or so, and thought I’d share! Any constructive comments are welcome! Big thanks to Jackson Churchill for the guidance and tips!

Happy Friday, everyone! I hope you’ve had a great week and are ready for an awesome weekend! I wanted to end my week by sharing another clip from my recital with you! This comes from the first movement of Richard Peaslee’s Arrows of Time. The piece was one of the most challenging I have ever prepared, but it was a ton of fun and I feel really great about the performance! Be on the lookout for the full piece on my YouTube channel in the coming days!
Also, can we all appreciate Josh Vigran’s playing right now? The guy is incredible!

This morning I wrapped up my last day of teaching in my first year here at UNT! These classes have grown so much this semester and I cannot wait to watch their careers flourish as they become excellent music educators! Their resilience and grit through this semester of Zoom classes has been remarkable, and I will be forever grateful for all that they taught me. The future of music education is bright with these future teachers!
Performance Announcement!!!
My first recital of my doctorate is coming up on the 16th of April at 4:30pm CDT! I’m incredibly excited to share this program with you all! Be on the lookout for updates and a livestream link soon!
Just finished up a morning full of tuba! Am I doing this right...?
So, I’ve been having a weird practice day today and I was thinking about this so I thought I’d share some thoughts.
Have you ever heard from someone that our only job is to be better than we were yesterday? I have, and while I appreciate what that phrase is trying to get across, I think it has some falsehood. Let me explain.
If my job as a performer is to only be better than I was yesterday, what happens when I have a bad day? Does that make me a bad musician? No. Does that mean I failed? No.
Our progress at anything is not linear. We will have bad days. That’s totally fine. The idea is that with time and effort, our progress will slowly move upward.
If you made it all the way to the end of this, thank you for taking the time to read these thoughts! Have a great rest of your Thursday!
Happy March, friends! Spring is rapidly approaching here in Texas (after an insane winter storm!) Life has been crazy for the Viviano family, but things are going great! Some exciting things musically and professionally coming up, as well as some MAJOR house updates to come in the next few weeks! I’m thankful that you all are along for the ride!

This next quote comes from another current student. Jacob is a junior at Bryant High School and a talented young euphonium player! He recently auditioned into the top Region Band and qualified for an audition at All-State! He is pushing hard for a spot in the All-State Band and we are all cheering for him!
Today’s is going back to the Georgia Trombone Summit back in 2018! I have the honor and pleasure to work with and learn from the members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. One of those members being the great James Markey! Happy Birthday to one of the most inspiring and humble musicians I have ever met!
Today was my first performance of the Spring 2021 Semester! I had the pleasure of playing Joseph Jongen’s Aria et Polonaise on the Trombone Studio Departmental Recital and I thought I’d share a small chunk of that performance with you all for your enjoyment! Take a listen!

Here is another student spotlight! This one comes from a current student, Mr. Jonathon Mellor from Bryant High School! Jonathon is a junior at BHS and is a prominent leader in the band program. He also recently earned the 1st Chair spot in the Arkansas Region 1 Concert Band! He will audition in 2 weeks for the All-State Bands as well. Good luck, Jonathon!
Go visit my website or send me a DM if you are interested in joining my studio! I still have a couple spots open for the Spring 2021 semester!
Today’s testimonial comes from some of the most dedicated band parents in existence (second only to my own!) Robin and Jimmy Jones care so deeply for the success of their son and his band program. They stop at nothing to lend a hand or dedicate a weekend to make the Bryant Band program a better place for the hundreds of students involved. Thank you so much for the kind words, Robin and Jimmy! Also, if you’re in Arkansas and need some AMAZING photos taken, Jimmy is your guy! Check him out!
I guess we’re goin’, folks! Spring 2021 is underway!
Here’s another testimonial but this time from a wonderful colleague and friend. Josh Gardner is the Associate Director of Bands at Bentonville West High School in Bentonville, Arkansas. The guy is one of the most committed and passionate educations I’ve had the pleasure of working with. He is doing amazing things in and reforming music education in the state. I’m honored to call him a friend! Thanks for the kind words, Josh!

I found an absolute gem while cleaning out my closet at my parents house! This is a fantastic for the week! This picture was taken at an MSU Jazz Band concert in the spring of 2015. It came with a letter from Mr. Jerry Hoover to my parents and I had never seen this. That guy is one of the best, and I am thankful for his thoughtfulness and care.
Here is another student introduction! I’d like you all to meet Mr. Ryan Smalley! Ryan is a freshman bass trombone student at Henderson State University in Arkansas. At HSU, he studies with Dr. Jamie Lipton. He performs in several of the top ensembles and is making great waves in the department of music! So much so that he was given Honorable Mention in their Concerto Competition! What a huge deal! This guy is making huge progress at HSU, and I am so excited about what he will accomplish in the future. Check him out!

He performs in the nationally renowned Natural Slides Trombone Ensemble. Congratulations, Taylor! Keep up the great work!

Goodbye 2020!!! I think we all can agree that 2020 was not the year we were expecting. The only folks who predicted this year correctly are crazy psychopaths that need some professional help! 2020 has been a rollercoaster of a year for my family. I am going to do a bit of a year reflection here in this post, so I a...
