During pregnancy many changes occur in your body. One of these are that during the first trimester the amount of blood increases by 40 to 50 %.

Extra red bloods cells are need to carry the extra oxygen taken up in pregnancy; the greater plasma volume increment is needed to cope with the very large increases in blood flow to organs which require extra oxygen.
