Join the Downshift book club!
As we reflect on our role in our community, we decided it's important not only for us to address racial inequities within our own four walls and what we as a staff/small business can do in order to support the Black Lives Matter movement, but also how we engage in outreach with our local cycling community. For this reason, we invite you to read Bicycle/Race: Transportation, Culture, Resistance by Adonia E. Lugo, PhD with us through our virtual book club this July. We are not here to pretend we are experts, but we want to learn with you. Kelsey Harrington, GM of Downshift will facilitate the book club over Zoom throughout the month of July (https://www.downshiftbikes.com/product-page/bicycle-race-book-club-registration. All proceeds from registration/book purchases will be donated to a selected non-profit by the book club participants. Kelsey is a mechanic and manager at Downshift but has a master's degree in student development theory where she studied identity development theories and became a trained group facilitator. Before joining the Downshift staff, she hosted workshops on gender, sexuality, interpersonal violence prevention, bystander intervention, and more. We asked ourselves, if not us, then who? We feel a responsibility to spark a fire in the Roanoke cycling community that further progresses us towards a more inclusive, welcoming community for all. We cannot do this alone. Please consider joining the conversation. Learn, struggle, reflect and ACT with us.*If the cost of the book/donation is prohibitive, please contact us for a sponsorship*

While we are indoors with light rain today think about when using public parks to follow the Social Distancing guidelines. If we all do our part the quicker we can slow the spread!
Thank you Eastern Trail Co. for sharing this photo taken by .zar. Mountain bikers may certainly benefit from Franklin County Parks while also following CDC guidelines to avoid groups and maintain a 6 foot buffer.
Pictured here cyclist Devin Cutter even creates a 6 foot buffer from the ground.
Tag us on Facebook and Instagram to show how parks benefit you in spite of challenging times.
