CRYPTO - TERMS 👀

Alts/altcoins— any digital asset other than Bitcoin

Bulls / Bullish - Upward trend

Bears / Bearish - Downward trend.

Blockchain — a digital ledger in which transactions made in bitcoin or another cryptocurrency are recorded chronologically and publicly.

dApp — decentralized application -. A decentralized application is usually one running on a blockchain, implemented with smart contracts.

fork — when a blockchain splits for any reason

FUD — fear, uncertainty, and doubt

Fomo- Fear of missing out.

hodl — holding a crypto/asset through any storm/crash.

Whale — Someone that owns a large amount of that coin.

Mining — the process of computer hardware running complex mathematical calculations that confirm transactions and enhance the security of the network (GPU or ASIC)

Hardware wallet — a physcial device that stores public and private keys. (Eg — Ledger)
ICO: Initial Coin Offering, or a token sale. This is the process or event in which funds are raised for a new cryptocurrency. The investor gets tokens as a result usually. (Like an IPO, buying before the exchange from the start)

Fiat — Government issued currency, eg -USD/GBP

Moon- When a cryptocurrency is flying, (huge increase/growth)

Wallet — A “wallet” in terms of cryptocurrency is a digital place to store your bitcoins/Crypto.

All Time High (ATH): The highest price a given cryptocurrency has seen so far. Not the ideal place to buy an asset.

DYOR — Nope.. this isn’t a cryptocurrency even though you may see it talked about a lot on Twitter, it actually means do your own research, don’t just take someones word for something, go out and carry out your own in depth research before investing.

Laddering — Setting incremental buy or sell orders/Staging your buys at different prices.

Leverage — Borrowing against crypto or the dollar to increase your position size, linked to Margin Trading.

Long / Short — Going long means betting on the price going up, going short means betting on the price going down. You do this with leverage usually, almost like spread betting.

Satoshi Nakamoto — The founder of Bitcoin, no one knows who he is, where he’s from or even if he’s still alive. It’s a mystery

Market Cap — The total value of the market or the currency you are looking at. To work this out: Circulating supply x Current Price = Market Cap.

Short squeeze — A short squeeze is a situation in which a heavily shorted Crypto moves sharply higher, forcing more short sellers to close out their short positions and adding to the upward pressure on the stock.
