Told my neighbor I'm a , and asked if he had anything I could list.

Lo and Behold, now I have a chance to a FULL CASE of Car Leashes IN PACKAGE!

He wants $65 a piece, but I can't find comps outside of .

I'm guessing they'll sell for $500 each, but wonder if anyone can use Worthpoint to give me a solid value?

I got some thoughts:

I'm not going to get into all of the details, and I am sure this idea is not 'Perfect' but I think it holds credibility.

Of note: Have you ever seen a Mom and Pop store go out of business? 9x out of 10 they 'could' make it if they had an 80% off sale, and blew out lots of stuff. For a small business, the inventory on hand can almost always cover the bills that are going to get them shut down ... bu they have to have CASH in hand to go on. What MOST ppl do is cut prices by 20% or 30% and push forward for a week or so, as they announce GIANT 70% OFF SALE in 3 weeks! And they cover a good portion of their outstanding bills, sell a nice chunk of things, and then go out of business and toss a lot of stuff with tears in their eyes wishing that product A, B, or C had sold because they were 'so close' to 'making it'.

I've been there, and I have friends that have been there.

It SUCKS Super Bad.

In retrospect, I thought: 1). "I only needed $_.__ to make it and stay in business and continue my dream ... and I threw away stuff that was worth 10x that amount at the end." AND 2). "Obviously I was doing SOMETHING wrong, or I could have succeeded."

Sooooo ... here's what I WISH I had done:

I wish I had seen the writing on the wall of things turning to the point that I was going to have to close, and I had just said: "Everything is 40-50% off starting RIGHT NOW, and if you want to buy in bulk, then we need to talk."

Here's why:

1). The odds are VERY HIGH that I would have covered the expenses that were killing me, and I could have gotten some breathing room ... because almost every store has enough inventory that at even 60% off that it could hit the bills.

2). It would clear my shelves and FORCE me back to Ground Zero (which is where most small businesses start), and I would be able to avoid a lot of the mistakes I made in the past.

You see ... in the first scenario, you're losing everything and walking away with only owing a few bills ... but you are DONE.

In the 2nd, you're taking a MASSIVE hit, losing ALMOST everything, and you're PROBABLY covering all of the outstanding bills ... BUT ... you are surviving, and you have a chance to learn from the mistakes.

How does this apply to E-bay?

Here's what I think they should do:

1). Starting immediately = 50% off of ALL seller fees. Listing Fee, Final Sale Fee, Promoted Listings, Store Fees, and EVERYTHING.

If you want E-commerce buzz, this is going to get it for you.

*Nobody working for the company gets to say ANYTHING about why. All things = 'No Comment' and they brew even more buzz.

2). They start 'Ebay 2.0' with no announcement, but it has a DRASTICALLY IMPROVED SEARCH ENGINE, It has a method to secure payments at the end of auctions, and it has the other things SELLERS have been asking for ... ALL FOR THE PRICES THEY ARE PRESENTLY CHARGING.

3). After 12 months ... there could be NO NEW LISTINGS on Ebay 1, and they can say that was why everything was 50% off. And then after 18 months (?) they can kill E-bay 1 and everyone can go to Ebay 2.0 with it's slick new system.

Here's what we know:

1). Something is NOT working, and Ebay needs to get a fix on it FAST, or they are just going to continue spiraling down.

2). Sales Surges come when people THINK they are about to get rich, and they tell others. This is a large part of why there was such a boost during the pandemic. Seller 1 told their mom they were doing ok on furlow because they were selling stuff on Ebay. Mom told the neighbor her kid was getting rich selling on ebay. Neighbor mom told their kid to do what the neighbor kid was doing to get rich. Neighbor kid looked into it, and bought something BEFORE deciding they were going to sell stuff and get rich. ... Everybody started talking about getting rich, and everybody started 'selling' which made even more buzz.

You CAN'T beat the buzz of people saying they are going to get rich. It is 1,000x better than people saying they got a good deal.

Buyers are fickle. Sellers will FIGHT to get the buyers onto their preferred platform.

Ebay just has to get the MILLIONS of sellers to tell everyone that the best deals are on Ebay, and that they are 'about to get rich' from selling there.

This started off as a totally different thing, but as I think about it more, I'm starting to consider what it would do to our listings and search results?

Think about it ... especially if you are a Niche Seller ... every time you go to Ebay, you type in a very small slice of the spectrum. Ebay is logging that, and it is showing you more and more refined results.

Additionally, if you are listing the same thing over and over ... it knows your listings have a certain appeal to a certain audience, and it will show them to that audience (maybe exclusively?).

Breaking the algorithm by expressing an thought pattern seems like it is a long shot, but it may be that simple.

Anyone wanna try some style shock to the system?

I sometimes wonder what the world would be like if EVERY Social Media platform walked away from using an Algorithm to TARGET the users? I understand the marketing aspect, and I know the algorithms work to sell product, satisfy those who seek re-enforcement, and such ... but what about DISCOVERY? What about other viewpoints presented in ways you have never heard? what about being exposed to things you have never seen?

Discourse can't thrive with everyone digging in their heels and saying: "The number of people that agree with me is huge, and I've got 10,000 likes on my post to prove it!" Of course you do. Your post was presented to 10,000 people that ALREADY agree with you, and 200 that strongly disagree ... so it would draw out more people that DO agree.

The psychological manipulation at work behind these Algorithms is INTENSE, and it's something you should think of before ANY purchase, support for ANY candidate, or donation to ANY cause.

It's both fascinating, and amazing to me that psychology has been stagnant for almost a century, and yet it has an immensely fertile field of play (and live study) when algorithms are used on Social Media platforms.

I strongly believe that the potential for MUCH more abuse than is presently taking place is available, and that the public has been VERY fortunate to date.

Solution?

I'm not sure I have one, but my suggestion would be to START with doing searches for things you would NEVER normally search for, and then following the rabbit hole.

How do you do that?

Well ... it's going to be hard, but MAYBE if you turn off your phone or computer or both and then walked around for an hour and observed things that you don't have a clue about and then came back and did searches on them ... you MIGHT be able to break the algorithms you have set.

Search:
"Origin of Sidewalks"
"What BTU's mean on an Air Conditioner"
"Number of beverages mankind consumes"
"Famous Clothmakers (not clothes designers)"
"Alternatives to Hours, Minutes, and Seconds"
"Origin of Cheese"
"The Invention of Coat Hangers"

or anything you don't normally search.


... CAN'T HANDLE CONSISTENT UNPREDICTABILITY, and it will throw their into a tizzy for at least a day, IF you go deep enough into things they believe are absurd to you.

OR ... just continue being fed the same thing you already consume, custom packaged for your specific taste.

I'm sorry that I haven't taken the time to 'really' set up this page, but I can tell you that doing it SLOW AND STEADY is going to be worth it.

I just re-named the group I'm running (https://www.facebook.com/groups/251554589858131 ) and THINK I finally got things set up on my FB account to accept friends and allow people to look at it, comment, etc.

I'm thinking more and more that to get 'Followers/Subs/Etc.' on other Social Media ... that you have to start with Facebook. It's the easiest to 'friend' on, has the most easily searchable content/topics/ and niche's ... and is the most recognized of the formats.
The Big Problem is the demographics at the core, but that core has contact with the demographics of the people you want to reach.
The challenge is to get the demographic you REACH to inform the demographic you WANT to check you out. Added to that challenge is the Sub-Challenge of getting the demographic you WANT to answer a 'Call To Action' and actually engage.
