-2011-I was 29. One of the most fun roles, Marie, in La Fille du Regiment. This was when I was the Artist in Residence with Opera Idaho. My costumes ranged from this fancy get-up, to an army uniform! She was a spunky character, with more high E's than anyone could remember!

There’s a difference between “hearing” and “listening.”
You probably know yourself when you practise the piano…sometimes it’s easy just to “hear” what you’re playing, almost like you’re observing.
Think about it: we look at our hands from above. It’s quite possible to just *observe* what’s going on, almost in a detached way. We go through the motions, see our hands making the way across the keys, and “hear” the result of the sounds we make.
But to “listen” - to truly LISTEN - requires an engagement at a different level. It means we stop to listen to the silence even before a note is played; we listen to the beauty of the sound, and pay deep, deep attention to our technique. And all of a sudden, such listening means that the notes connect with each other: we pay attention to the shape of the line, the voicing of the chords, the way we tone match from one note to the next.
And perhaps the most beautiful thing of all? True listening means that we connect with the much on a far, far deeper level. We experience the sound profoundly, rather than just participating in music making.
But what’s truly marvellous is when we’re able to communicate that deep, deep listening as teachers. It’s not easy. But the results can be magnificent.

Univeristy of Redlands, Circa 2000-02ish. I came into college with the focus as a singer/songwriter. I took guitar lessons and when I became exposed to the fuller world of music in college, I took in all experiences I could! Cello lessons, choirs, conducting, composition, world music, so many! And, of course all the theory, ear training, history, etc.... My open-mindedness, and yearning to learn more in a supportive and cultivating environment allowed me to find my true path, one of performance, creativity, and leadership. I see this picture of this young woman and think "Wow, I had no idea what was to come in my career and the ways that my music would be used to speak to others." I didn't completely choose this path from the start! The path chose me, and I am blessed for it, grateful, and inspired by those I get to work with everyday. Today I am a singer, voice teacher, and choir director. So, be open-minded and follow your heart, even if your heart starts to whisper detours!
