Teachers of Mission
An annual gathering of those who invest in forming others for intercultural ministry.
All teachers and trainers of missions and missionaries! We pray you are all well and having a great start to 2023. Our annual meeting of Teachers of Missions (TOM) will once again happen this year via Zoom. We are planning to have time together on the afternoon of March 31, from 3:00-5:30 p.m.
The first part of our time will be focused on the changes we are seeing in Gen Z (and soon, Gen Alpha (yes, that’s a real thing!)) and how this impacts our teaching, mentoring, and mobilizing. We’ll also have time to hear updates from different schools and institutions. The second half of our time will focus on the future of our annual meeting. Several of us have been working together, thinking about how to make this time productive and helpful. We want to invite all to join in as we contemplate together God’s preferred future for TOM.
Please make a point of joining us. The Zoom link is this:

This is a new post on the Honor-Shame network website. It is a condensed version of an article in the International Journal of Frontier Missiology (which you can find here https://www.ijfm.org/.../37_3_4.../IJFM_37_3_4-Flanders.pdf). The issue of conviction is a critical one for contemporary global missiology, so I encourage you to take a look.

Hi, friends! The Mission and World Christianity section of the Christian Scholars' Conference is still taking proposals. We'd love to receive yours! https://christianscholarsconference.org/submit-call-for.../
Even if you aren't presenting, mark it in your calendar. Our sessions are quickly becoming the premier venue for rigorous, scholarly missions conversations in Churches of Christ.

Those of you who are interested in issues of shame/honor/face, contemporary North American culture, and the church may find interesting this recent post on the excellent Mission Alive Blog site.
The Transformation of Shame: Attending to the North American Honor/Shame Context By Chris Flanders My assigned topic for this blog was the presence of honor and shame dynamics among various subcultures in the US and how the church needs to be aware of those dynamics if they wan…
Great resource for those engaged in teaching and forming God's people for mission. Carrie Allen Vaughn, Werner Mischke, and Jackson Wu have a new podcast y'all should subscribe to if you are interested in global theology or missions and theology. If you are interested in honor-shame issues, check out the new episode (S1, E3) that just dropped today- "No such thing as honor cultures? Interview with Chris Flanders."

Many ask me about my research focus involving honor-shame issues. Here is a recent recording of a presentation I gave at the Asia Mission Forum (AMF) that is an excellent introduction to many of the issues involved. Also, there are many excellent video presentations available for free on the AMF Facebook channel.

Feb. 23-24 Inn Express Hurst, TX
Just spoke with our featured speaker, Werner Mischke. This promises to be an incredibly important presentation. How does honor and shame impact the major issues we all work on teaching and engaging among our constituencies? Is a traditional, western, individualistic, guilt-focussed approach to the gospel and theology adequate for our 21st century contexts? These and other issues will be a part of his challenge to us. Detailed schedule to come.
Abilene Christian University
Larry Henderson doing his thing in ACU daily chapel.
WorldWide Witness coordinator Larry Henderson made quite an entrance into Chapel Monday – along with a message worth remembering.
All, a message this morning from Ken Mick, Wendell Broom's son-in-law. Please be in prayer for their family.
"Wendell's status has changed these last few days... Kathryn flies to Dallas Saturday morning to join her 5 siblings - at 93 year old, Wendell is choosing to forego regular medications, resisting drinking and eating, comes and goes in his lucidity - seems at peace, generally speaking, but if I had to guess he is making his move and likely doing it with some deliberation. Just didn't want you to be hit cold with any developments. He has rallied before and they actually released him from hospice care two years ago, but I think the next few days may be his moment."
Please all, be in prayer for our dear friend and former missionary to Thailand, Larry Henderson, who goes in for surgery this morning to remove cancer from his lung.
Call for Papers - Christian Scholars' Conference | Lipscomb University
I want to encourage writing in this area to submit a proposal for next summer's (2017) Christian Scholar's Conference at Lipscomb University. There will be several missions/missional sessions, including this one.
Missional Theology and the Future of the Church June 7-9, 2017
(http://www.lipscomb.edu/csc/call-for-papers)
This session welcomes scholarly submissions related broadly to missional theology and missional church practices in the US context. Papers that address specific contextual concerns (theological or practical) or offer constructive proposals for the twenty-first century church are of special interest.
Authors should submit proposals (approx. 300 words) to Greg McKinzie ([email protected]) by January 21, 2017. Authors will receive word about their proposals by February 15. The three best proposals will be chosen in consultation with peer reviewers. Papers presented in this section will be considered for publication in an upcoming issue of Missio Dei: A Journal of Missional Theology and Praxis.

Missio Dei Journal
All (though especially those who teach in academic settings and are about to create syllabi and meet with their classes soon)- The online journal Missio Dei (http://www.missiodeijournal.com/) is a fantastic resource for engaging critically missional issues. It is oriented primarily as a Stone-Campbell resource, though it reaches beyond that in many respects. It would be a super valuable resource to provide to your students, majors, and any that you are teaching/training. Would you please alert them in any way you see appropriate about the journal (it is free!) and also subscribe to the Missio Dei page (https://www.facebook.com/missiodeijournal/?fref=ts). This will be a huge blessing to students and help the journal connect to a younger generation of readers.
The 2017 Honor-Shame Network Conference (Wheaton, 2017)
A landmark event that I want to encourage all who can to attend.

Most recent estimates I have for CoC #'s in continent of Africa put total at over 1 mill around 2002. Does anyone have any idea about current estimates?
