Hmong new year celebrations - It’s a time when I excitedly look through my Hmong clothes (kept safely in suitcases and pushed all the way in the back of my closet, of course) and wear it to a place where there are so many others wearing it too. I especially like when I dig out my Hmong clothes that I haven’t worn in such a long time!
This particular outfit I’ve had for over 30 years! My uncle brought this back for me during his travels to China in the early 1990s. He told me that Hmong women wore this in China. It is authentic hand stitched art on fabric. I was a little girl and had not seen Hmong clothes that looked like this and I thought it was so beautiful!
Putting it back on today, I felt a sense of pride in myself and my Hmong people around the world.
Seeing so many different types of Hmong outfits at the new year celebration today with all the different vibrant colors, delicate patterns and intricate designs - it doesn’t matter where in world it is from, you can tell it is Hmong!
It is not everyday we get to wear our traditional clothing that represents us as Hmong to the rest of the world. Happy Hmong New Year! Zoo sab xyoo tsha 🤗💕 -Julie
Today is the Hmong New Year celebration in St.Paul, Minnesota and WOW - there are so many people here! The celebration is a special time for the Hmong people. Zoo Sab Xyoo Tshab txhua leej txhua tug!
Come visit us at the Hmong Arts and Craft Fair in Maplewood, MN. We’re here and so are many many other artists/makers/creators! It’s been awesome meeting so many folks and children and even babies! Hope to see you too! Thank you! -Julie 🤗💕
Do you find yourself in situations where you are trying to teach your child a valuable lesson and no matter what you do or say, the child continuingly refuses and the more you press the more frustrated you become and end up doing or saying something that you later regret? All the while your child is upset, crying and throwing tantrums. If so, then consider this quote:
“When relationships are strained and the air charged with emotion, an attempt to teach is often perceived as a form of judgement or rejection. But to take the child alone, quietly, when the relationship is good and to discuss the teaching or the value seems to have much greater impact.”
-Stephen R. Covey, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
