‼️New book recommendations‼️

We always love getting new book recommendations, but especially love when they come from our students! 💪📚These texts are great choices for middle school and early high school students.

The first book is Kwame Alexander’s “The Playbook.” We love this author and have read many of his novels, which are typically written in verse. This text is a mix of verse and prose and includes life lessons centered around professional basketball player’s stories. It’s very engaging for the sports lover in your house! This was recommended by a current rising 6th grader.

Our second text is Frederik Backman’s “Beartown.” Backman is typically an adult author and has written many popular texts, including “A Man Called Ove.” My student who suggested this book is so passionate about what a strong read it is that I ordered it on the spot! The setting is a town that is very immersed in their youth hockey program, but when a crime occurs it totally rocks the community and affects the future of the hockey team. The student who suggested this said it is so suspenseful that she finished it in one day!

We are beaming with pride that Co-Founder Brooke Wilkins's op-ed on the science of reading was published for Education Week. We are so proud of you, Brooke, and love that you keep our profession thinking and growing when it comes to teaching reading!

📚😎As we continue our summer reading series, today we focus on the impact of 20 minutes of reading each day!📚😎

We know it is hard to find the time to carve out each day for reading. Your children's lives are busy and even in the summer when it seems like there is so much more time, sometimes the unstructured days fly and suddenly weeks have gone by without picking up a single book!

The image below focuses on the importance of reading each day, even in the summer. Although the focus of the graphic may be test scores, which are not always a reliable data point, it is proven that students who actively read 20 minutes each day are more successful in the classroom.

How are you finding ways for your child to read the summer? Everyone is looking for tips!

Weekly spotlight: Summer Reading!🌞🕶️

From our Co-Founder, Jeanine Shea:

We are officially entering the end of June and my boys have settled into a summer routine. Something that is very important to our family is making sure everyone is reading each day! The boys had been begging to go to Barnes and Noble to find new books for the summer, so the rainy weather this past weekend was the perfect opportunity to go and find new titles and start reading!

As a language arts teacher, I always want my kids to read books that are rich in literary content. When my youngest handed me Cat Ninja and begged for it, I was very resistant. However, his first grade teacher told me about the importance of "dessert books" for kids, so I told him Cat Ninja could be his "dessert book" as long as he chose a few other chapter books that were on his level. 🙂

My boys are excited to start their summer reading and even had time to get started over the weekend.
