Got an idea for a unique artwork? I work on commission in landscape, seascape, still life, and florals - send me a message any time for a custom piece.
As I will be aiming this page much more toward my fine art in future, I thought an overview of my basic landscape process might be interesting! In the vast majority of my works, I start with a moderately precise sketch - this includes the precise perspective of the landscape and it’s elements, the exact shape, size, placement and angle of all elements, etc. The sketch is always created with the final lighting scenario in mind, to avoid undesirable shadow interactions, lack of contrast with closely matched colours clustered together, and so on as the painting progresses. From here I lay out the palette I intend to use - typically this is somewhere between 10 and 15 oil pigments which can be mixed harmoniously to produce a smooth range of colours without extreme clashes in tone. I always begin with the sky and most distant elements, working forward from there. As things move closer and closer to the foreground, greater contrast and range of colour become necessary. Shadows are deepened with glazes of transparent dark colour, rich tones washed over with bright transparent colour, and so on. There may be 4 or 5 layers of these, in the most dramatic areas of the work. I never move past a certain area of the painting unless I picture myself standing within the area currently completed - this is not to say that I chase after absolute realism in my work (this is almost never the case!), but rather that any lack of visual harmony must be resolved before I feel comfortable to move on. (I save myself many later corrections by taking this approach.) The most fun element, by far, is the detail work… Decorating the topography with the sweet riches of nature - little flowers, leaves, birds, stray blades of grass, and so on. Prior to this point the work has structure, but it does not have ‘life’… Though knowing how much ‘life’ is enough and having the disciple to stop is most challenging!
Hopefully this proves interesting! The work below is a recent commission piece due for framing this weekend ❤️. If you would like something similar please do get in touch!
