We’re glad to present the design of a fine hotel located in a warm humid climate barely above the sea level. In first place a “mixed mode” design is devised to provide mechanically air-conditioned rooms through individual mini split systems addressing the thermal comfort in each one of the rooms. In the other hand the common areas are naturally ventilated through crossed ventilation through the envelope and partition walls. Secondly the front façade of the building is conceived to block the direct sun into the rooms throughout the year providing guests with comfortable shadows and the property owners with a mechanical equipment operating under higher cost efficiency. Finally due the long dry periods in the region, the building is equipped with two 5000 lts. rain water collection tanks for hydraulic fixtures internal supply.

Located 10 min Near the international airport of Medellín and around 2150mt above sea level, this site has been commissioned the design of a 150 sq mt hillside house.

Our first step is to understand the climate of our site, for this purpose using hourly data collected in 2018 at the international airport we can produce a Psychrometric chart that allows us to see the behavior of the temperature and humidity throughout the year and how often do this conditions fall within the polygon of the comfort zone.

The second diagram plots a comfortable or not vote defined by the Colors pink, meaning yes or white meaning no. In other words, each of the pink rectangles mean that for that specific hour of the 2018 the climate conditions averaged between 35 and 55 % of relative humidity and the air temperature felt between 23 and 26 C degrees. Comfort standards as per the AHRAE adaptive comfort model for this latitude.

Out of 8760 hours accounted for the year only during 1050 hours or 12 % of the time these conditions were recorded, with uncomfortable hours happening mostly at night. After A thorough climate study, we will provide a mass plan to set the house with the best orientation on the hill and improve the comfort performance in the night through smart data driven design.

Daylight, air permeability, landscape and shade define the design in the rear part of this building
