Bones Custom Guitars

I've been creatively building electric guitars in Houston,TX for over 35 years

I finally got around to getting all my guitar's specifications together and decided to post them before I figure out my next steps... these are in no particular order

Throughout the last 25 years I've had the privilege of building custom guitars without the constraints of having to sell or earn money from them, just keeping them for my own collection and because of that I've had the freedom to try new designs and ideas. This next guitar is a fine example of getting to make what "I" think is a cool looking instrument, a reverse bodied reversed headstock two humbucker beauty all done up in variegated copper leaf sheets and ready to rock. Probably not for everyone but that's just fine ... I made it for me

The last time I built a guitar with P90 pickups in it was 30 years ago but this guitar was spurred on by a suggestion from a Facebook post . The comment was , and I quote " Next, we'll have a P90 loaded blues machine please... 🙂" and so this is what I came up with... Weird, Right??? What's even more weird is that I actually read everyone's comments to my posts and sometimes I'm actually affected by them🤣😂👍

I made a list sometime last year of some build concepts that I wanted to try and needless to say this one was on that list. This is a radius top poplar body with the two sides lowered about 1/8 inch and a flame veneer glued and bound on the center section, I chose Sapphire blue micro flake with a washed out black stain for the maple portion and I tried to match the fretboard to the guitar. I'd like to think you won't find another like it anywhere...

My latest creation... I'll just let it speak for itself

I have a confession to make, I can't willingly stop building guitars... so I've had to make the tough decision to force myself out of materials (mainly wood for bodies) so that I would stop building and get a majority of the ones already completed set up and ready to sell, I have a plan, fingers crossed. I have a new guitar I will post tomorrow and then 3 more and that's it until I sell some and make room. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

As many of you might know my good friend John Douglas is a very talented drummer and artist and on occasion he will grace a guitar with some of his amazing artwork. This is an Epiphone Explorer on which he painted U2's The Edge, I then clear coated and buffed it and put it all back together and he sent it on to Animazing Gallery in Las Vegas where it quickly sold. https://www.animazing.com/

Sometimes when I'm contemplating a new guitar build I think to myself "what is totally unexpected?"and of course I have no restraints so I just go for it. This is my homage to Semie Moseley of Mosrite fame, a reverse carved top body finished in copper leaf sheets with a black lace pattern and why not put a Floyd Rose tremolo on it? Probably my last "build" posting for the year... Looks like a lefty but plays like a "righty". Anyone confused?? 🤘

I decided to revisit a original body shape of mine but this time instead of just putting a radius on the front I chose to carve the top instead and I must admit I kind of like the results. I also figured since I'm drawn to shiny objects ( which I am) I would give it a special finish... it turns out all that glitters really is gold!

After I did my first fabric top guitar I always wanted to revisit the process so I conceived this one a few months ago, I call it "Little Demons". It's a carved top poplar body with this fabric glued on along with white ABS binding and I did a custom mix of Onyx and Purple flake for the back and sides, my usual 2 humbucker setup ... no wonder I hear voices in my head.

I have moments of great creativity and then there are the times when I can't come up with anything... this guitar was started and built during one of those "creative voids". I had sketched this out on a piece of poster board almost 2 years ago and I didn't like it enough to start it but when it came time for a new build this was all I had (@ 5 months ago). It, as always is far from perfect but I think it has a "Unique Factor" to it and I'm glad I built it.

I'm constantly working on something, I took some time away from neck making and started 3 new poplar guitar bodies ... everyone needs to see how the "sausage" gets made don't they? https://www.instagram.com/bonescustomguitars/

For all of you coming to this page please be patient with me , I'll do my best to fully populate it with new guitars and info, I seem to be juggling a lot right now but I will make it my mission to complete it soon, Thanks.

I believe great things can come from humble beginnings... Here are some pictures of my workspace, a 2-car garage that I share part time with my wife's car. I've built many of the machines and fixtures needed for my work and I'm proud of the instruments I create in this space.
