Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain in adults and has been suggested to affect 1 in 10 people at some stage in their lives. Plantar fasciitis is an overuse injury resulting in degenerative changes to the fascia( generally affecting the medial ⅓ of the heel). Plantar fascia is a band of connective tissue that supports the arch of the foot and also acts as a shock absorber when pressure is placed on the foot.
Risk/ predisposing factors:
▪️Limited ankle dorsiflexion
▪️Excessive Running
▪️Occupations requiring long bouts of standing
▪️Repetitive strain causing an overuse injury
▪️Inadequate footwear(eg) high heels
Symptoms:
▪️Pain during the first few steps in the morning and or after sitting for a long period
▪️Tightness of the calves and or achilles tendon
▪️Pain during walking barefoot
Minimally invasive treatments have been proven to be most effective with surgical intervention being a last resort option. Treatments may include shockwave therapy, appropriate exercise prescription, activity modification and orthoses. Approx. 80% of patients diagnosed with plantar fasciitis will significantly improve within 12 months of implementing non-operative treatments. If you have any questions or would like to know more please give me a DM!!

The main two questions I get asked by people since qualifying as an Athletic Therapist are “so what exactly do you do” and “so what does that qualify you as”. So I’m here to explain a small bit about Athletic therapy and what it entails.
In short terms athletic therapy is a cousin of Physiotherapy offering injury assessment, treatment and rehabilitation specialising in musculoskeletal and sporting injuries. Although Athletic therapists mainly treat the sporting population this does not mean you have to be a sports person to be treated by an athletic therapist.
Currently in Ireland there are three colleges which offer Athletic therapy, DCU, AIT AND ITC. I completed my studies in IT Carlow which consist of 4 years studying about the body and various injuries while also completing pitchside modules, placement and hands on experience in a student led college clinic.
Athletic Therapy also places a large emphasis on strengthening the patients in preparation for return to play/ return to daily activities. Some other therapeutic treatments that may be offered include the following: injury prevention programmes, articular manual therapy and soft tissue manual therapy
Hey guys and welcome to my page 👋🏼 Here’s just a small bit about myself:
My name is Laura Doyle and I am an Athletic Therapist from Clara, Offaly. In 2020 I graduated from IT Carlow where I studied a Bsc in Sports Rehabilitation and Athletic Therapy. As an Athletic Therapist I am fortunate to be able to work with athletes from various sporting backgrounds such as gaa, rugby and soccer to name just a few. My hope with this page is to build general knowledge of various injuries and also share information on topics such as injury prevention.
📍I am currently based in ASPIRE,Clara. If you would like to book an appointment with me please don’t hesitate in popping me a message. Thanks all for liking and sharing the page!!
