Bulldog Proud
Dear Teachers and Staff Members of the Garfield Heights City Schools,
On behalf of the Board of Education, we express our sincerest gratitude to those individuals who have dedicated themselves to preparing future generations of students, our teachers, and staff members, during National Teacher Appreciation Week. The Board of Education will be forever grateful to our teachers and staff members for their time, energy, talent, wisdom, and willingness to become mentors for our students. They are entrusted with a duty of the utmost value and sacred task: helping prepare our children for their future…and in many ways, our own futures. National Teacher Appreciation Week is celebrated each year during the first full week of May, and while we are extremely appreciative each and every day of the entire year, during this special school week, the Board wanted to share its deep admiration and respect for our Teachers.
Thank you for your tireless efforts to empower our students, set them on their appropriate respective journeys in life, and equip them with the many skills, qualities, and characteristics that will make them successful.
Enjoy your week, and thank you all, once again.

Garfield Heights City Schools to Host Parent/Stakeholder Meeting on April 13th
In collaboration with Finding Leaders, who have been engaged by the Board of Education to conduct the search process for the new Superintendent, the district will be hosting a parent/stakeholder forum on Wednesday, April 13th at 6:30 p.m. in the Little Theater at the High School. At the forum, participants will be asked to share their viewpoints on the qualities that the next superintendent should embody. The intent of this forum is to help inform Finding Leaders, as they begin to narrow the search in identifying the next leader of the Garfield Heights City Schools with as much input from the community as possible.
Garfield Heights Board of Education Partners with Finding Leaders to Officially Begin Search for New Superintendent
The Garfield Heights City Schools Board of Education is excited to announce that it will partner with the experienced executive leadership search firm, Finding Leaders, to officially launch its formal search for the new Superintendent of our district. Finding Leaders brings a wealth of expertise and a national network to their work of identifying educational leaders during times of transition. The Board of Education is eager to collaborate with Finding Leaders, to identify who can most effectively lead the Garfield Heights City Schools into a new generation of excellence in education. The process will unfold over the next several weeks and will include a comprehensive search for top quality candidates who understand the strategic plan, mission, and vision of the Garfield Heights City Schools, and who can appropriately align with the Board of Education to cultivate continued success. The partnership with the Finding Leaders comes in light of the resignation of Superintendent Chris Hanke, which will become effective on July 31, 2022. The Board of Education is excited to begin this process, envisions a robust interview and screening component, community involvement, and intends to identify an inspiring, energetic, and accomplished individual who understands the needs of our Bulldog school family. The GHCSD will keep the community informed of updates in the process. Thank you for your continued support.

Garfield Heights City Schools Awarded $404,000 from US Department of Education
The Garfield Heights City Schools is excited to announce that it has become the recipient of a $404,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education for the recruitment, retention, and promotion of teachers of color, and to improve instructional practices throughout the school district. This grant for the Garfield Heights City Schools comes as part of a massive funding investment that the federal government is making through the Department of Education to public school districts throughout the country to affirm its commitment to equity and educational access for all.
“We are extremely delighted that the sustained and dynamic efforts of the Garfield Heights City Schools over the last several years to become champions for diversity, equity, and inclusion,” said Christopher G. Hanke, Superintendent of Schools. “This funding opportunity helps the district to fulfill our strategic plan’s focus to effectively recruit and retain teachers of color in the district.”
This $404,000 will be awarded over the course of a 5-year window in partnership with the Educational Services Center of Cuyahoga County and will be dispersed beginning in 2022. The Garfield Heights City Schools views this grant-awarding as an affirmation of the efforts it has been making in the areas of racial diversity, equity, and inclusion over the last several years. Each passing year has seen continued milestones of the district’s commitment to diversity. Please remain on the lookout for more information regarding the federal funding to begin the systematic and aggressive recruitment of teachers of color. Thank you for your continued support and Go Bulldogs!
COMMUNITY FINANCE COMMITTEE NOW TAKING APPLICATIONS
The Garfield Heights City Schools Treasurer’s Office is now seeking applicants for its newly forming Community Finance Committee. As an outward reflection of the Strategic Plan and effort to pursue
enhanced community engagement, this Community Finance Committee is being created. The district’s intent is that this committee will be comprised of citizens who have an interest in school finance and school business management. Since these areas are highly regulated aspects of a school district operation, having community input and feedback is critical. While the Treasurer essentially serves as the chief financial officer and reports directly to the Board of Education, it is this person’s responsibility to oversee the financial operations of the district as well as prepare financial projections. Such planning should take place publicly, and this Community Finance Committee will help the Treasurer’s Office in the following key areas:
Review the Five Year Forecast and Assumptions supporting the forecast on a semi-annual basis.
Share business and financial best practices from the private and public sectors.
Review, and gain an understanding of the school district’s financial operations, including the
following important areas: Fund structure and requirements, financial reporting, millage rates,
property valuations, and the tax budget.
Understanding tax revenues from residential, commercial, and public utility sources
State Funding (Biennial Budget, Fair School Funding Plan, Homestead/Rollback)
Annual Appropriation Measure/Budget.
Understanding of Negotiated agreements
Special education costs and unfunded mandates
Understand financial issues impacting the GHCS along with all Ohio Public schools
Communicate and solicit input regarding school district financial issues raised in the community
Prepare and present periodic reports on the committee’s activities to the Board of Education’s Finance Committee.

Please take a moment to review closely the criteria above, and consider joining the Community Finance Committee. Thank you for your continued support. Go Bulldogs!

STAY IN THE GAME with GHCSD🐾 and the Cleveland Browns!🏈
Student success starts with attendance and engaged learning! Students who are absent from school experiences miss important learning opportunities, which can be difficult, or even impossible, to make up. The mission of the Stay in the Game! Keep Learning, Every Day Network (the Stay in the Game! Network) is to prioritize attendance by connecting its users to resources aimed at tackling chronic absenteeism.
