Last night, the Bloomington City Council voted 6-1 to put the Hyland Green‘s property in a conservation easement and convey the land to Three Rivers Park District.
What does this mean? Three Rivers will take over ownership and the land can never be developed. It must remain a golf course or public park in perpetuity.
As we balance the need to develop with the important priority of preserving public open space and parks and recreation opportunities, I am proud to have voted in support of this decision.

Is that Deputy Chief Giles!?!?!? 👀
Okay in all seriousness…. Congratulations to Deputy Chief Giles as he retires from the City of Bloomington! Like many, I was pretty sad when I heard, but also so happy for him and grateful for his 30+ years of service!
We will miss you Jeff!
It has come to my attention that inaccurate information related to the Nine Mile Creek project and ballot question is being circulated.
I’m not sure where this person got the supposed details, because the details have not at all been determined. We don’t know if it’s viable to have a bike option at Nine Mile Creek (although there is interest for bike trails, especially among the mountain biking community).
The primary goal of this project is natural resources preservation and restoration, specifically to address invasive species and riverbank erosion. This is a desperate need. It’s also to increase ADA accessibility and make improvements to upper Moir Park. Anything that does not support these goals, will not be considered.
In addition, before details are figured out, there will be much more community engagement! So if you feel strongly about bikes one way or the other, that is important input during that engagement.

Another super successful Bloomington Pride event! And you still have time… it is going until 5pm! 🌈 🌈 🌈
Thank you to the Bloomington community volunteers and TC Pride staff who spent hours and hours organizing. And thank you to the numerous sponsors for making it all possible!
It was an honor to join Bloomington leaders Karla Henderson and Faith Jackson to present at the State of Black Health conference. Sharing about the innovative, bold, and comprehensive work the city has done to advance racial and health equity was humbling and makes me so proud! It isn’t easy and there have been stumbles along the way, but when you back up words with action, center community voices who are most impacted in decision making, and keep the work moving forward, meaningful and impactful change can happen.
Check out Bloomington’s new Adopt a Park program! We are fortunate to have 97 parks and green spaces (about 1/3 of our land!), but that means it really does take a community to keep them clean and beautiful. This has been something I have heard residents ask for over the years and so I’m very excited it’s happening!

It was such a pleasure joining the Invest MSP Launch Conference today! Team Bloomington represented and demonstrated how our economy with incredibly successful small businesses to major international companies is a critical driver in the metro region, the state, and the Midwest.
I left inspired by all that is happening in Minnesota, as well as the increasing economic opportunity before us. I was especially happy to hear leaders from across industries and the state prioritize equity, sustainability, and resilience as moral and business imperatives.
So proud to be a Bloomingtonian and Minnesotan!
Today and everyday we honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our democracy and country. 🇺🇸
I also want to thank Bloomington Veterans Memorial for all they are doing to ensure Bloomington has a space to remember those who have served. It was an honor to walk with them in the Memorial Day parade.
Below you will find a statement from the City of Bloomington regarding the Minnesota Supreme Court Decision on Ranked Choice Voting (bottom line: no change in municipal elections). As a reminder, the residents of Bloomington voted in 2020 to adopt RCV.
***
The Minnesota Supreme Court issued a decision in a case regarding a proposed charter amendment related to ranked choice voting in Bloomington. The decision means there will be no change in November’s municipal elections. Voters in Bloomington will use ranked choice voting to select city candidates on the ballot.
The case arose out of a proposed charter amendment submitted by a group of five residents to repeal ranked choice voting and to require a two-thirds vote to reinstate ranked choice voting in the City’s municipal elections. A district court determined that the two-thirds vote requirement to reinstate ranked choice voting was manifestly unconstitutional.
Six justices wrote the majority opinion that held the district court and the City properly declined to place the entire proposed charter amendment on the ballot and that it would be improper for the court to sever or remove the unconstitutional provision because it was integral to the purpose of the amendment.
The Supreme Court said that the purpose of the proposed amendment was clearly two-fold: to repeal ranked choice voting and prevent it from being reinstated in future elections. Given the importance of the unconstitutional provision, the Court was unable to conclude that the residents of Bloomington who supported and signed the petition would have done so if the proposal did not include the severed provision.
