The Waikato Climbing Club will be climbing at Boulder Co. Hamilton tonight. If you were thinking of joining, but a bit uncertain, pop down and say hi. Many of our members will have their club shirts on and should be able to point out our committee members.

Over the last few months we have run outdoor trips, recently to Maungarei Springs, Auckland. Put 21 club members through an outdoor first aid course. Had some fun on Friday nights with "speed dating" some members are working on S&C a couple of days a week. Plus the comp season is fast approaching. Recent competitions have included NZSS and AIMs where we have had youth climbers podium.

Anyone, got any old shoes with rubber still on them?

There is an awesome small community on the East Coast near Gisborne starting up a new climbing group and they are looking for used but useable climbing shoes to get them started (especially kids shoes)

So if you have some shoes lying in a corner, why not send them off to good use?

Either bring them to one of our upcoming events or PM us for an address to send them to!

Hi all,

We are very lucky to have the National Boulder Competition in Hamilton this year, at the awesome Boulder Co. Hamilton. There is sure to be some great boulder problems, so think about entering and supporting our sport. If you don't think you are up to Open A level, there is a Boulder Jam as well. Which means you can have a go on the routes, before they get striped for finals.

Did you know we are holding a boulder jam style competition at the La Sportiva National Boulder Championships 2024/25?

This is for all those who want to have a go on our Open Boulder Qualification problems and aren't quite old enough to compete at Opens (Youth B athletes born in 2009 and 2010) or Open B athletes who just want to have a fun day out.
You can watch our Open Boulder athletes attempt the problems and then have fun trialling them yourself!

So what's the difference?

- No isolation period
- Self-scoring
- 2 hour Boulder Jam style competition
- No finals

So all the fun, none of the pressure!

Limited spaces available so get yourself registered asap

Aotearoa Climbing Access Trust is ‘owned’ by the entire climbing community; there is no organisational boundary. We aim to support, facilitate & coordinate community effort. Most front-line access work has always been done by individual climbers and clubs which maintain landowner relationships.

ACAT’s job is to:
• Step in where additional expertise is needed to help with complex access issues
• Identify common obstacles to successfully resolving access issues, and take strategic action to improve the access landscape
• Facilitate community effort and support access champions working to maintain access around Aotearoa.

We work WITH and FOR the climbing community of Aotearoa.

We held our club AGM on friday.
See below the President's Report.
A big thank you to Haley and Patrick who have stepped down from the committee, after 2 years. They have been amazing!
Welcome to Leah and Brendan coming onto the committee and Tara for taking on the role of secretary.
Membership is open, with some great deals for members.

Presidents Report:
Thank you to everyone for attending the AGM.

It has been a busy year for the Waikato Climbing Club as we look to get into an established yearly routine with club activities and grow our club membership.

As a club we have been busy across a number of activities:
Competitions - hosting and attending.
Friday night club nights
Club trips
Training

Over the last year a number of our youth competitors have competed in International, National and Regional competitions. Including Hamish McLaughlin recently competing in the Australian Youth Nationals representing New Zealand in both Top Rope and Bouldering, well done to Hamish.

We have had competitors compete in Youth and Masters bouldering in Auckland in October 2023 and then we co-hosted the Youth, Masters and Para Nationals here in Hamilton with Extreme Edge. We had a reasonable turnout of club athletes. With some notable successes with Hamish and Renna both making the National Youth Development Squad and Sasha also performing well. Renna and Sasha then went on to compete in the Development squad event as part of the Open National Lead competition held in Rotorua in March 2024.

Friday nights have seen a range of club activites, we had Kate Ward from Align Health give us a talk on looking after our fingers, Doug and Sylvia gave us a great presentation on how to check our gear to make sure it’s safe and fit for purpose. We did a build your own boulder competition and speed championships and more recently had our inaugural bring a friend for free night as well as starting a regular Friday night at Boulder Co.

Some of our older junior climbers along with a few others embarked on a strength and conditioning programme with Emma Paton based at Wintec, there were some impressive gains made by many of them. Many thanks to Emma and Doug for facilitating this.

This year we held a club Christmas camping trip. Big thanks to Tim at Oparurue Crag for hosting this and also for the chance to do the trip for a heavily discounted price. Also thanks to Doug and Mark for cleaning and scouting the routes, and Lyndon and Muhammed for being the supervisors on the day. This was a fantastic get together with some great outdoor climbing and beautiful food for our shared dinner on the Saturday night. Many thanks to everyone else who helped make this happen.

Along with the outdoor trip theme Doug arranged a High ropes experience at Karapiro, run by First Steps, this was loads of fun on a beautiful day. In
February we held an outdoor climbing day at the Waipari Crag, this was again a great day with some getting their first experience at outdoor climbing.

As a club we invested in new helmets and bouldering mats to make outdoor climbing safer and are in the process of upskilling members to ensure we can run outdoor events safely, but without always having to rely on the same people. We would love to see more people put their hands up to help out and get trained up.

This coming year we are looking at running more formal training including a weekend outdoors first aid course at the Pirongia Lodge. We are hoping to do more outdoor trips and continue to build our club numbers.

There was great excitement in the club when . opened in February giving us another training venue.

We hosted two successful climbing competitions this year, including the Youth, Masters and Para National Lead event and just recently our own regional climbing competition. Thank you to for allowing the gym to be used as a venue both times and to all those who made these events happen, with some long hours put in by a number of people. Special mention to Sylvia, whom without we would not be able to run these events at all.

We have established a number of new partnerships with the likes of Extreme Edge, Boulder Co. Trek ‘n’ Travel, Bivouac, Adrenaline Forest and Raglan Rock, making club membership more attractive, this is mostly thanks to Haley who has worked hard to secure these deals with the associated businesses.

We are looking to build numbers and are looking to work with other stakeholders such as ACAT to improve climbing access for all and Boulder Co. for another great place to train and hold competitions.

I would like to see our competitive climbers grow and excel at National events as well as continue to grow the club as a whole. To do this we need to get more families involved and encourage more up and coming climbers to join. We need to be inclusive and welcoming in our approach and open to change and innovation as well as provide the tools and platforms for our young athletes to succeed, fostering a love of all forms of climbing with opportunities for all our members. I believe we are well on the way to doing this, but there is always room for improvement, so bring on the 24/25 season!

Lastly, but most importantly thank you to the committee members, without which there would be no club, they put in a huge amount of effort to bring you events and keep the club functioning. Thank you: Haley, Lyndon, Sylvia, Doug, Patrick, Muhammed, Natasha and Tara.
