The reason I chose to volunteer for this non-for-profit organization is that I was looking for a possition that allowed me to be involved in the community while being locked up in quarantine. Since I joined this team, I have been more productive than I have ever been and had the opportunity to help vulnerable communities at the same time

Hi, my name is Miya! Right now I am resonating with the word “kindness”. I am the founder of The Kindness Club and its affiliate brand, We Are Kind. I love volunteering and watching others connect through volunteering. I believe that people’s hearts are naturally kind and that when we are given the opportunity to express our compassionate nature, we flourish. I started The Kindness Club in 2018 as a volunteer group in Vancouver on meetup.com to help others form connections and spread kindness through volunteer work. The Kindness Club is now a charitable organization that connects volunteers to local charities and nonprofits in need across Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, and Ottawa. Now with over 2000 members, we will soon be launching a website that allows volunteers to search for opportunities and form a volunteer network with like-minded others. The We Are Kind brand (wearekind.ca) sells T-shirts with kind-hearted messages meant to uplift others. The purchase of a T-shirt supports The Kindness Club and the charities we help! Right now during the COVID-19 pandemic, I feel that spreading kindness is needed more than ever! I am super excited about this course and a little nervous since I am taking BIO230 concurrently. Nevertheless, I am looking forward to learning about genetics and having discussions with my peers!
