🫵 🥳 It's Engineering World Health (EWH) USYD Committee Application time!!!

EWH (not to be confused with EWB) is one of USYD's most exciting and up and coming engineering societies! A humanitarian engineering society under the umbrella of SUABE, every year we seek to offer a platform for extra-curricular engagement for engineering and STEM students to approach and consider health-related engineering problems impacting low-income communities in Australia and around the world.

What can you give?

We want driven, organised students who have a passion for doing good. Some of the key goals include:

🤝 Looking at the possibilities of longer-term collaboration with faculty for humanitarian engineering research.

🤝Collaboration with local medical equipment redistribution centres and charities.

🤝 Run a design competition in Semester 2 2024 focused around providing real engineering solutions to existing issues impacting low-income communities.

🤝 Design fun events to keep people engaged with the society.

What do you get out of it?

🤝 The chance to use your engineering skills to make a real difference.

🤝 An integral role in the building and development of a young society at USyd.

🤝 Experience organising and running events for other students.

🤝 Experience working with other students and faculty to create a meaningful platform for people to engage with.

Applications due via the google form by 11:59pm Thursday 28th March.

Want to help develop a new medical device to save thousands of neonates?

Newborn babies are one of the most vulnerable population demographics on the planet. Within the context of developing countries, they are at a high risk of developing severe infections, congenital defects and post-birth complications which can lead to death.

However, with early diagnosis it is possible to spot the warning signs of health complications in neonates. Vital signs such as pulse oximetry and body temperature act as key indicators of a neonate’s critical state and whether they are in need of further treatment at a hospital.

As a part of the Engineering World Health Design Competition, our team is looking for enthusiastic electrical/biomedical engineer(s) to assist with the manufacturing of a low-cost system that allows for the simultaneous monitoring of multiple neonatal vitals. With your help, we envision the future of neonatal care to incorporate wearable devices with digital systems that allow for easy identification of newborns in need of intensive care before it is too late.

Experience with the following is preferred but not essential:

- Circuit + Electronics Development
- Arduino Prototyping
- Pulse Oximetry Measurement Methodologies
- Body Temperature Measurement Methodologies

Want to get involved?

Here are some more details for Team A's - ZeoLight project :

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a non-communicable disease characterised by narrowing the airways, alveolar wall destruction (emphysema), and amplifying inflammation and proteolysis throughout the respiratory system.

Given the harmful effects of burning biomass fuels, possible alternative heating sources to biomass for communities in Humla were explored that did not rely on electricity and did not produce toxic chemicals.

Team A has proposed/ designed a stainless-steel thermal cooker, akin to a pressure cooker, that does not require fire or electricity to produce heat. They are aiming to ensure simplicity and familiarity so that the people of Humla can quickly adopt this solution.

They are using the exothermic reaction of zeolite and water to simultaneously cook meals, as well as possibly generate electricity using a thermoelectric generator. Theoretically, this electricity will then be stored in batteries, and released to power thermoelectric couples or a thermoelectric stove to evaporate the water out of the zeolite and reactivate it so that the cycle can be repeated indefinitely until each component wears out.

If you think you have the passion and skills to help Team A please complete the form above !!!!!

🌞🌞 EWH Summer Institute 🌞🌞

For those who may be interested. EWH offers a summer institute program that involves a two-month service abroad for university students in STEM.

For the first month of each program, participants will complete intensive language and technical training in-country. This training prepares participants for their work in hospitals during the second month of the program, providing the hands-on skills needed to troubleshoot and repair vital hospital equipment in a low-resource environment.

Teams of two to four participants are then placed in local hospitals or healthcare facilities, working closely with hospital staff to assess each hospital's needs and improve their healthcare technology situation.

For more information: https://www.ewh.org/the-institutes/summer-institute-programs/

If you are interested fill out this form and we can help assist you with the application.
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfMJHUABpOvQKLKkiiu2Zdr_V9NNcEQXC049cH4676osUDvRw/viewform

EWH is able to cover the application fees for the first five applicants.*

*Please note this does not cover the costs of the actual program just the application fees.

🌏🚨WEEK 9- REMINDERS !!! 5:30 tonight PNR room 311🚨🌏

Hope you have all enjoyed your mid-sem break.

We have the Prototyping Workshop this evening Tuesday, October 4th, again starting at 5:30pm in PNR Room 311. For Teams 1-7, the expectation is you try and be there in person if possible, but if not, and for Teams 8 & 9, the zoom invite is in your emails.

The focus of this is to try and test some functionality in your designs, which is important to demonstrate key points of feasibility and viability in the criteria. We will also discuss what you need to start considering as you prepare for the final pitch, and clarify exactly what you should be working towards. If you think it may be beneficial, we can also support the production of a secondary prototype for some teams.

As always, please reach out with any questions. See you tonight!

See you soon!!
